Well, that was an inter-esting experiment.

When we decided to embark down the road that ultimately became the Best of Estevan poll, the simple concept was that it would be interesting to hear what residents thought about the various businesses and services in the community.

Which is the best res-taurant? Where is the best pizza? Who is the city’s top dentist? The answers to these questions are often debated in our day-to-day conversations, but here was an opportunity to actually fi nd out what everybody thinks.

A n d while that proved to be an interest-ing facet of this exercise, the other by-product was the chance to gain a deeper insight into what Este-van residents care about on a broader basis.

As it turns out, Estevanites really care about their food and their health care. Of all the cat-egories in the poll, those centring around food —

Health and food draw bulk of votes in fi rst pollwhether it be restaurants or grocery stores — and health easily received the most votes.

Although we weren’t overly surprised that two areas were popular with voters, how popular they proved to be was a bit of an eye-opener to be sure.

For instance, the best family restaurant category received 165 votes while other areas such as best all-around restaurant, best fi ne dining, best Asian cuisine and best pizza were also

among the top vote getters.Opinions were also

strong when it came to the city’s various grocery stores. In fact, the top grocery store category saw over 180 people cast votes, giving us a very strong sampling size. Areas such as fresh produce, frozen foods, meat and deli and top bak-ery also drew a signifi cant amount of interest.

When it came to health care, the voters also had a lot to say when it came to

their favourites.Categories such as best

pharmacy and best dentist both drew a number of votes and others in the health profession also captured the attention of those who fi lled in their ballots.

Although food and health were our most popu-lar categories, there were certainly many others that struck a chord with voters.

In the shopping sec-tion, categories such as best place to purchase ap-

pliances, building supplies, offi ce supplies, fl oor cover-ings and jewelry garnered a great deal of votes.

The poll also proved that Estevan residents care about their vehicles and who they allow to service them.

Categories such as autobody repair, new car dealership, oil/lube changes and tires led the way in terms of votes.

Interestingly, the auto-motive section also provid-

ed us with what many in The Mercury offi ce called our biggest surprise as the best carwash category easily drew the most votes among all automotive categories.

In fact, the best car wash drew the second high-est number of votes in the entire poll.

Overall, more than 300 people cast ballots in the fi rst Best of Estevan poll and we thank them for helping make this exercise a success.

Go back a couple of decades to one of those classic Seinfeld moments on television when Kramer accuses Jerry of being prejudiced against dentists.

“Admit it Jerry, you’re a raging anti-dentite,” Kramer shouts to his erst-while neighbour and friend.

Well, Seinfeld would have a diffi cult time hating Estevan’s choice of being one of the top dogs in the medical care delivery fi eld, even if he does have to in-voke a little pinch of pain once in awhile.

Dr. Doug Blue was the favoured among Estevan’s voters who participated in fi lling out the Best of Este-van survey in this category of care.

In his usual self-dep-recating manner, Blue provides a simple shoulder shrug and a wide smile when informed of this status in the community.

“It’s the staff around here, not me and I mean that,” he said. “They’re the ones who make people comfortable, make it work. I’m just here,” he said.

Since he’s been in the dental care business for over 36 years, the amiable dentist on Third Street knows his way around a cavity and could prob-ably fi ll one with his eyes closed, although he never has, we’re sure.

At the age of 25, the freshly scrubbed dental school graduate got right into the business with a private practice in his home town, which is unusual since most new grads like to set up in an established

fi rm while they get their feet wet.

“When you get out of university you’re capable,

but you don’t really know it. It’s only after awhile that you gain confi dence,” he said, recalling his fi rst

months going it alone. The only other dentists

in Estevan at the time, Dr. Wood and Dr. Kosloski,

weren’t looking for any associates or partners at the time and another dentist, Bill Davis, had closed up his shop and gone to work for the government that had just introduced a dental plan for schools.

“I bought his building and his equipment. It was a little dated, but we made it work,” Blue said.

Thirty-seven years later even he’s a little aston-ished at the strides that have been made in the wonderful world of dental manipula-

tions and oral surgery. “The materials, tech-

nology, it’s rather amaz-ing. I’d say that none of the equipment or material we used back then is being used today. It’s all advance-ment,” he said.

“There’s less drilling, implants were unheard of. Now look at this world. There have been major improvements in public dental intelligence. We’re all better informed. Every-one’s getting it now. People know that hygienic teeth ⇢

So who would have guessed that the most popular category in the Best of Estevan survey would be vehicle washing services.

But there it was … numbers don’t lie.

And Matt’s Car Wash was the most popular car washing service in the most popular category in the city wide survey.

Brothers Chad and Jason Mehler and their sister Brenda Mantei are the long-time owners of the popular car wash ser-vice located along Souris

Chad Mehler laughs when he hears that vehicle washing in the Energy City is obviously a popular and important event.

He suggests it has a lot to do with the fact that a good portion of Este-vanites are engaged in the mining, power production or oil production business and as a result, their units have a tendency to pick up more dust and dirt than your average city cruiser. Then there is that other pride of ownership thing

too. A lot of people have nice looking drives and they like to keep them looking that way.

So what makes Matt’s more popular than the other vehicle washing services?

Chad thinks that part of the answer can be found in the fact that they try to keep up with all the mainte-nance challenges that come with the business.

“It’s a pretty harsh environment at times. It can be rough on the equip-ment but Jason and I seem to be able to keep up with most of it and of course

the usual hose or pressure problems you might fi nd, our staff can deal with most of the time.”

With Brenda keeping tabs on the accounting and bookkeeping end of the business, the partner-ship has proven to be a worthwhile one for all concerned. They have owned it since 1980, hav-ing purchased it one year after it was built by Duane Holmgren.

Matt’s has always been a self-service, wand-style car wash that features 11 bays including two very

large drive-in slots that are dedicated to large trucks or equipment.

“There is a wide vari-ety of users, but I know for sure the oilfi eld people use it a lot,” Chad said.

Another selling fea-ture is the car wash’s spot free rinse that uses reverse osmosis and full pressure to provide a truly speckle-free appearance. It takes a little extra effort and investment to provide the added touch, but it has paid off for this family trio over the years.

“We have tried recy-

cling the water, but it just didn’t work, not with the spot free for sure. It just wasn’t reliable enough for us to commit to it yet; Plus we need the best clean water supply and pressure we can fi nd to remove the mud that’s on some of these units,” Chad added. “Lots of mud.”

In fact with last sum-mer’s additional rains and greasy road conditions, there was more mud than usual.

He noted that there is never a typical week for use. They’ve never done an actual vehicle count over a period of time, because usually the bays are too busy to keep track of the units that come and

go from the drive-through service that sits on about an acre of land, giving the larger units enough room to manoeuvre into position and exit efficiently.

“On an average sum-mer day, if the sun is out and we’ve just had some cloud and rain, the place will be humming all day,” said Chad.

“In the middle of winter, if it’s cold like we had in mid-January, you might see only four or five vehicles the entire day. It depends so much on the weather.”

Matt’s is open from 8 a.m. until 10 o’clock in the evening seven days a week, rain, sun, or mud, it doesn’t matter.

There’s an old saying that familiarity breeds contempt.

And if you’re a sub-scriber to that axiom, then you would expect the Days Inn of Estevan and the many enterprises that encompass the operation would not have garnered many votes in the first Best of Estevan poll.

You would be wrong.The Days Inn opera-

tion, one of Estevan’s old-est and most well-known businesses, captured first place in five different cat-egories in the poll, the most of any local company. The hotel itself was selected as Estevan’s best hotel/motel. Granby’s on 9th was the people’s choice for the city’s best fine dining and also earned honours for top steak and seafood. Blackbeard’s Restaurant also garnered attention, winning for Estevan’s best breakfast.

Jeff Pierson, the gen-eral manager of the Days Inn operation and part of the third generation of his family to work for the business, said they are thrilled with the vote of confidence they received through the poll.

“It’s something that myself and the whole com-pany are very honoured by, being that it was voted on by the public. There is no better judge than that,” said Pierson. “Knowing that people think of our operation like that is very rewarding.”

Pierson attributes the success of the hotel and the accompanying restau-rants to two things: his staff and a commitment to quality that began with his decades ago with his grandparents, George and Dorothy Symons.

factors have helped them maintain a level of consis-tency throughout the entire operation that they are all very proud of.

“We do have many different areas of operation but we expect them all to be at a high standard and it wouldn’t be a good op-eration if we had a couple of really strong areas and a couple of really weak ones,” he said. “The goal

of the company is to be bal-anced across the board.”

In looking at their overall business structure, Pierson described the hotel as the centre of their world and said the success they have enjoyed in that area spreads to their other busi-nesses.

“We are bringing peo-ple into the hotel counting on that they will use the other services we offer in the operation,” said Pier-

son who added that their employee base deserves much of the credit for their success in hotel.

“You have to have a quality product but in say-ing that, a quality product will only take you so far. After that it is all about the people in the hotel from the front desk staff to our housekeeping staff. Those two areas are what will make or break your hotel and we have such

a phenomenal group of people and a lot of them are long-term employees. And over time, those long-term employees build relation-ships with your customer base and that leads to your repeat business.”

If the hotel is the centre, then Granby’s is the nice cozy room just off to the side. Tucked down in the basement of the Days Inn building, Granby’s offers a varied

dining experience with nice secluded areas for a couple enjoying a night out or a group of people looking for good food and a great atmosphere.

Pierson said they take a great deal of pride in Granby’s success as it was the first business started by his grandparents.
