IT’S BECOMING AN AGE OLD QUESTION question: Which smartphone should I choose? Many Canadians may feel loyal to locally based RIM’s BlackBerry. But the question is

being raised of their loyalty switch? Although BlackBerry is still the most used phone in Canada, does the US based technology trump current Canadian offerings? This month, Business Review Canada finds out.

BLACKBERRY

RIM has been under a lot of scrutiny recently. Originally thought of as a company that produces phones on the forefront of technology and was so popular the phone was nicknamed the “CrackBerry,” in recent years it has started to be viewed as a dying company. With un-spectacular launches, investor satisfaction decline and a more competitive market, BlackBerry may be on its way out.

PHONE OFFERINGS

BlackBerrys today still have exclusive access to the BlackBerry Messenger Service, a fast way to communicate with coworkers. Offering touch or keypad navigation, BlackBerry phones have a variety of user options. The BlackBerry Torch 9850 is “all touch, refined” featuring a 3.7 inch touch screen, the BlackBerry 7 OS, a 1.2GHz processor and multitude of apps. BlackBerry’s Bold 9900 features a touch display with built in keyboard, the thinnest BlackBerry design to date, the BlackBerry 7 OS and 1.2GHz as well as app capabilities.

STRATHCONA COUNTY IS A COMMUNITY seriously focused on energy efficiency. With their strategic Sustainability Frameworks, urban villages and collaboration with community based industries, Strathcona County

focuses heavily on creating a community focused on utilizing renewable resources.

THREE FRAMEWORKS

Starting in 2002, the Three Frameworks initiative has three legs: social, environmental and economic sustainability.

The social leg of the Three Frameworks strives to provide a socially sustainable community. The project has goals such as building and maintaining community resources, providing a sense of community to residents in the county, being all inclusive in opportunity availability, creating a safe and secure community, and maintaining a positive quality of life for residents.

monitor its progress and implement improvements. Strathcona County Council will use a report card standard to show public progress over time.

“We’re looking very closely at how we can move forward on the frameworks and ensure that the economic part is not only for the County, but for investors looking into it as well. We’re in a very good place right now,” says Strathcona County Mayor Linda Osinchuk.

Strathcona County emphasizes conservation when developing new communities, whether urban or rural. An example of this is in their original urban village, Centre in the Park. This community’s district heating system provides heat to residential, institutional and commercial buildings. Although running on natural gas currently, by the fall, heat will be created by biomass from community construction and agricultural waste.

Created at the heart of the community, Strathcona County developed this concept by asking the question: how do you re-urbanize a suburban community? Planning Centre in the Park, a 20 acre development, Emerald Hills, a 50 acre development, and Salisbury, a 100 acre development, Strathcona County has clearly been busy. Hoping to develop a community of tomorrow, Strathcona is now eyeing a new development called Cambrian Crossing, a 700 acre development that will apply everything the county has learned along the way. Each development Strathcona creates becomes more advanced while incorporating different aspects

INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS

Strathcona County knows the importance in partnering with not only residents, but businesses within the community to produce results. In collaboration with Suncor Energy, which has a refinery in the community, the county has produced another way to ensure water conservation. Working

Niagara Falls, NY. A premier resort destination, the hotel is just blocks from the falls. The largest hotel in Western New York, guests can relax and rejuvenate in upscale splendor.

Another good choice for accommodation is The Giacomo, a luxury boutique hotel that features true elegance combined with exemplary service. Only an eight minute walk to the Niagara Falls, the hotel is perfectly situated. The structure itself, originally built in 1929 as the United Office Building, features art deco architecture that’s combined with a Mayan revival motif.

WHAT TO DO:

“Explore the Roar” touts the Maid of the Mist, a boat tour operator of Niagara Falls. Providing tourists an up-close and personal look of the falls since 1848, the

sightseeing cruise takes passengers into the dense mist of spray. Carrying distinguished passengers

over the years such as Theodore Roosevelt, Marilyn Monroe, Pierre Trudeau, Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry, the tour provides one of the most popular views of the Niagara Falls themselves.

Not a fan of boat tours but still want to get close to the falls? Walk to the falls instead through the Cave of Winds Boardwalk. Guides lead tourists to the base of the Niagara Gorge bringing you within fifteen feet of the falls. The hurricane deck lets you feel the falls with all of their glory including high winds and cold powerful water.

Finally, for a more romantic view of the Niagara Falls, head to Queen Victoria Park at night! The City illuminates the falls with a rainbow of colors nightly from 9 to 12 am. Even better, nighttime viewing is free.

Niagara Falls, NY has a lot to offer guests. With breathtaking views of one of the world’s greatest wonders and luxurious accommodations to complement your stay, the City is a great getaway for either business or pleasure. brca

CEO REPLACEMENT IS WHITE HOT and has dominated news headlines in recent months. In November, longtime Ford executive Dianne Craig became Ford of Canada’s president

and CEO, succeeding David Mondragon. In October, long-time IBM executive Virginia Rometty succeeded CEO Sam Palmisano, who is retiring at the end of this year. In September, after ousting Leo Apotheker, HP named Meg Whitman to be CEO. In August, former chief operating officer Tim Cook succeeded his iconic predecessor, the then-ailing Steve Jobs,

Nearly half the companies we surveyed have only an ad-hoc or locally-managed approach, or no approach at all. Yet, the demand for leader talent, particularly C-suite talent, is on the rise.

R EDDIT, A FORUM BASED WEBSITE, is becoming one of the fastest growing social media communities on the Internet. Offering users a place to share online

content, such as blogs, videos and photos, the Reddit community has started to become a digital platform in which digital content creators can utilize to drive significant traffic. What’s important to keep in mind, though, is the fact that the Reddit audience isn’t an easy group to sway. Becoming a member of the community as well as contributing like-minded content is the key toward making Reddit a legitimate traffic driving tool. Success in this realm will not only attract more of the Internet audience to your online content, but will also encourage return users who are interested in what you have to say.

Another benefit to CakeDeals’ offering is for the daily deal businesses. When competing with big names such as GroupOn and LivingSocial, smaller companies get left in the dust. Having all deals in one place levels the playing field completely, allowing for smaller companies to get their deals better traffic and make it easier for them to compete with the more popular companies.

“New deal sites approach us every day. They work hard to negotiate great group deals for customers. Many of them are trying to shake off the stereotype of just being labeled as a ‘Groupon Clone,’” said Sam Lin, COO and Accounts Director of CakeDeals.

Offering all daily deals for cities such as Brampton, Vancouver, London, Toronto, Victoria and more, consumers are getting the best deal out there. Currently, CakeDeals offers deal lists for 15 cities in Canada, 11 in the US and one in China. With a view

BUSINESSES ARE INCREASINGLY LEVERAGING CLOUD computing to drive opportunities and efficiencies in their day to day operations. In response to the growing use of smartphones

and the advent of cloud-hosted services, enterprises are engaging in new and innovative ways with their customers, employees, partners and suppliers to increase brand loyalty, generate new revenues and improve the overall business experience.

The key to these advances is the Application Programming Interface (API). In a nutshell, APIs are the rules that determine how applications interface with cloud-side service offerings to enable enterprises to reach far beyond their own web properties to distribute data, content or services that have relevance to their business operations. Effectively these APIs are the interface to the business services and access to APIs is controlled by API keys. API keys are codes generated to control and manage access to these services and most organizations use some form of API keys to access their cloud services.

Much lip service is paid to protecting information in the Cloud, but the reality is often a seat-of-the-pants policy approach to Cloud security. As noted, the API keys control access to business sensitive information – or the riches of your cloud assets- in the Cloud (e.g. email, sales leads, or shared documents) and pay-as-you-use Cloud services. As such, if an organization condones the casual management of API keys they are at risk of:

1. unauthorized individuals using the keys to access confidential information and

2. the possibility of huge credit card bills for unapproved access to pay-as-you-use Cloud services.

In effect, easily accessed API keys means potentially anyone could use them to run up bills, this is akin to having access to someone’s credit card and making unauthorized purchases. Yet despite this, API keys are often emailed around an organization without due regard to their

The Molson brewery has been around since 1786 and is the oldest brewery in North America. Founder John Molson was responsible for a variety of Canadian developments, including the country’s first railway, but he didn’t live to see the introduction of Molson Canadian in 1959. Over the past four decades, Molson Canadian has won several brewing awards while making an indelible mark on Canadian culture. In fact, Molson Canadian began using the red leaf on its label before it even appeared on the Canadian flag. Part of that vision is seen in what Olds College provides to its students. Offering community learning campus projects, such as the engineered water treatment wetlands project and a soon to be botanical garden, students are given hands-on opportunities in their education and research.

As an example, the upcoming botanical garden and treatment wetlands project will merge horticulture, land and environment management, and wetlands research into a living lab on campus.
