NATIONAL PARKSTarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania, covering an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers and situated just south-east of Lake Manyara in Northern Tanzania.

The landscape and vegetation is incredibly diverse with a mix that is not found anywhere else on the Northern Safari circuit. The hilly landscape is dotted with vast numbers of Baobab trees, dense bush and high grasses. During the dry season thousands of animals migrate to the Tarangire National Park from Manyara. The park is famous for its huge number of elephants, impressive baobab trees. Visitors to the park can expect to see any number of resident zebra and wildebeest, waterbuck, giraffe, and olive baboons.

Cat sightings are generally good, with lion, leopard, serval, caracal and genet cat residing in the NP.

Home to more than 550 species, the park is a haven for bird enthusiasts who can expect to see dozens of species - even in the dry season. The swamps are the focus of the largest selection of breeding birds anywhere in the world Tarangire National Park can be reached via paved road from Arusha in approximately four hours.

Lake Manyara National Park is only a 70 kilometer drive from Tarangire, making it an easy day-trip from Lake Manyara NP or even from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Tarangire is also easily accessed by air from Arusha and air strips in the Serengeti.

Game viewing is good year round, but best from July – January each year when large herds return to the Tarangire eco-system after spending time further north and east in various other parks and reserves.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Located around 2-3 hours game drive away from the main gate into Tarangire National Park, Oliver’s Camp is located in the exclusive southern region and offers a prime safari experience. This area is known for its large elephant herds and baobab trees, but also houses large quantities of lions, cheetah and leopard.

The 10 tents, which are well spaced out ensuring a feeling of intimacy, offer a large deck overlooking the Minyonyo floodplains below and wonderful outdoor showers with running hot and cold water. Inside, the tents are spacious and offer plumbed toilet and bathroom facilities.

The main lodge is brimming with history and is very cosy, yet maintains that rustic, ‘bush’ feel.

Each night, the bar is shifted down by the boma (fire area) where guests regale stories of their daily experiences over a G+T. As described by experienced safari-goers “Oliver’s is the real Africa”.

‘Fly-camping’ is also possible at Oliver’s Camp, whereby guests will hike out to their very own ‘fly camp’ where they’ll spend the night under the African night sky.

One of best things about Oliver’s are the walking safaris and night game drives which you can do here. These are definitely a highlight of any East African experience.

NATIONAL PARKSThe name ‘Serengeti’ (or more specifically “Serengit”) is derived from the Maasai language meaning “Endless Plains”, and this is the only way to describe the area. Yes, while there are riverine areas, acacia bush and kopjies, it is the vast grassy plains that roll over the landscape that define the Serengeti.

Each year around the same time the great wildebeest migration begins in the Ngorongoro area of the southern Serengeti of Tanzania. From here, the movement of the wildebeest and other grazers will start their move north, looking for new grazing pastures. January to March is the beginning of the calving season. This is because there is plenty of rain ripened grass available for the approximate 750,000 zebra, 1.2 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of other plains game.

During February the wildebeest spend their time in the south eastern part of the ecosystem, grazing and giving birth to approximately 500,000 calves within a 2 to 3 week period: a remarkably synchronized event. Few calves are born ahead of time and of these, hardly any will survive when mixed with older calves from earlier in the previous year, and so are easier preys.

As the rains end in May the animals start moving North West, into the areas around the Grumeti River, where they typically remain until late June. July sees the main migration of wildebeest, zebra and eland heading north, arriving on the Kenyan border and then into the Masai Mara late July/August for the remainder of the dry season (the Thomson’s and Grant’s Gazelles move only east/west and don’t cross into Kenya).

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK In early November with the start of the short rains the migration starts moving south again, to the short grass plains of the south east, usually arriving in December in plenty of time for calving in February. It is estimated that some 250,000 wildebeest die during the Great Migration (a total of around 800 kilometers). Death is usually from thirst, hunger, exhaustion, or predation. In addition to the wonder of the Migration, the Serengeti eco-system offers great year-round game viewing, with large numbers of predatory cats, some of the last remaining free-roaming Black rhino in East Africa as well as most other wildlife species, so regardless of the time of year visitors head to the Serengeti a very good safari experience is likely.





YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Dunia camp is a relatively small camp, with just 8 tents and is considered ‘semi-permanent’ – meaning that while it is completely mobile, it remains in the same location for most of the year.

Each of the spacious tents feature an en-suite bathroom and private veranda overlooking the Moru Kopjes in the prime wildlife areas of central and southern Serengeti; Dunia Camp combines elements of style and luxury with an incredible wildlife experience.

The Great Migration generally passes through this area twice each year, but it is especially known for its abundance of lion, leopard and cheetah and the rare chance to see the illustrious black rhino.

The tents feature either large, king sized double or single beds, with an enclosed bathroom, flushing toilet and ‘bucket’ showers.

A favourite experience at Dunia Camp is watching the spectacular sunrise over the African landscape from the comfort of a warm bed. Yes – you can literally see the sunrise from your bed inside the tent!

It was, in fact, the Serengeti that inspired Disney’s film The Lion King and it is easy to see why once you’re there. Approximately 70 large mammals and some 500 bird species can be found in the Serengeti.

The Serengeti, which spans some 30,000sq kilometers, hosts a long segment of the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world and one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world each year, which is of course, the Great Migration, which is generally in the area from August - November.

The Northern Serengeti is also home to the Mara River, where lucky visitors may get the opportunity to witness one of the renowned ‘river crossings’ where the wildebeest and zebra risk their lives crossing the crocodile infested waters to get to the greener pastures on the opposite side of the river.

The Northern Serengeti is great year round, with an abundance of resident game and is a real ‘hidden gem’ when it comes to the game viewing during the low season, as it becomes very exclusive as fewer visitors will make their way to the far north.

The Northern Serengeti is the only place in the Serengeti eco-system that allows off-road driving.

SAYARI CAMP, TANZANIAA spectacular 15 tented camp on the Mara River in the northern part of the Serengeti, Sayari, Camp has 2 “wings”, one with 9 tents and one with 6 tents. Each ‘wing’ has a separate mess and dining to ensure intimacy and personal service.Each of the 15 luxury guest tents are very spacious and have a comfortable king size bed (twins also possible) and a large, private veranda, overlooking the Serengeti. The en-suite bathrooms have flush toilets, a double sink, shower and beautiful bath with a view.

After game drives, guests can relax and continue admiring the view of Africa’s most famous ‘endless plains’ from the spectacular infinity pool or choose the privacy of their veranda, the warmth of the fire place, or the comfort of the atmospheric library, bar or lounge. Open vehicle game driving & bird watching, walking safaris in the morning or afternoon with a walking guide and ranger are all possible. This unspoilt area is a spectacular wildlife destination. The Tanzanian Mara River area is one of the greatest secrets of Africa, with large concentrations of animals year-round - like the Masai Mara on the Kenyan side of the border, but without the large volume of vehicles. Due to the limited traffic in the area, off-road game-driving is possible in some of the best game-driving areas around the camp.

The Migration usually roams around and in the area from mid-July to November each year, and during this time lucky guests could get to see the famous Mara River crossings of zebra and wildebeest.Outside the Migration season, there is still plenty to see: the area hosts many resident cats, elephants, zebra and wildebeest, herds of topi and lesser known animals such as the bat-eared fox.
