This song is about Biggie Smalls. Wilshire and Fairfax was the corner where he was shot.” The tracks on A Signed, each an exciting departure from the last, are full sonically, too, including guest vocalists and a wider range of instruments than Lace Curtains’s last LP. Squirrel Thing Recordings, the label behind the mysterious lost recordings of Connie Converse, is proud to announce the release of Molly Drake - a self-titled collection of never-before-heard songs recorded in the 1950’s at the Drake family home, and lovingly restored by Nick Drake’s engineer John Wood. Molly Drake is a comprehensive first look at a singular and sophisticated artist, whose influence on her son’s celebrated musical style is undeniable. The CD features a custom letter pressed jacket, family photos, and a biography by her daughter, Gabrielle Drake. Much like her son, Molly Drake’s music is at once beautiful, charming, dark and pensive. The easy elegance of her lyrics belies their deeper themes of regret, memory, dread, and the sublime, crystallized as only a poet can. Her performances are intimately staged in the family sitting room, and perfectly complemented by her own piano accompaniment.

An Evolutionary Music (Original Recordings: 1972 - 1979) compiles unreleased recordings from the archives of multiversal artist Ariel Kalma. Concerned as much with musicality as spiritual facility, Kalma’s work vibrates aside fellow travelers along the great rainbow in curved air of the 1970s avant-garde. Ariel Kalma’s boundary-blurring electronic music is heard here in radiant detail across a selection of work spanning his early free-jazz and spoken word trips to his infinite modular synthesizer and analogue drum machine meditations. Kalma’s story is one of world travel, musical discovery and ego-abandonment. Yet for an artist who often discarded public recognition in favor of the ascetic truths in music making, An Evolutionary Music offers the imprint of an outright auteur.

On her new album, The Rose of No-Man’s Land, Nell reaches into her family’s deep military history to create musical vignettes of her ancestors’ experiences. Mr. Mitch is one of a small group of producers who in the last few years have been re-imagining the decade-old genre of Grime. Miles Mitchell, a 26 year-old South East Londoner, started his own Gobstopper label back in 2010 after having his debut release on Butterz. For Mr. Mitch, Grime has “…always been an experimental and progressive genre, taking elements of what came before it and pushing those boundar-ies to create something new”. His debut album is called ‘Parallel Memories’ and Miles has an intriguing story that explains that title. When listening to his tracks, he sees the same vivid scenes in his head each time he replays the music, often repeated snapshots of his life in various impossible scenarios or distorted situations. This made him think “What if the images I’m seeing are memories from an alternative version of me in a parallel dimension?” A question which reflects his vision of Grime too, as his instrumentals are informed by a quite personal and emotive alter-life, where Grime’s famous minimalism gives way to a gentle subtlety and is imbued with a very different feeling to the brash aggression associated with the genre. This is an album that deserves to find an audience who are willing to go on a journey into new areas with Grime.

Girlpool is a Los Angeles based two piece made up of Cleo Tucker (Guitar) and Harmony Tividad (Bass). Having met at local DIY venue the Smell, the two quickly grew very close. Their sound is raw, comprised only of a guitar, bass and vocal harmonies. The band uses this stripped-down instrumentation to accentuate their vulnerable yet powerful lyrics to create honest pieces, tackling concepts ranging from awareness and respect to the simple of feeling of being alone at a show.

We Brought Knives is the newest album from Brooklyn group Metermaids, featuring dense, melodic pro-duction set atop rhythms that hit with the punch of the rowdiest hip hop around, subtly layered with enough detail to reward even the most discerning listener. Emcees Sentence and Swell, renowned for the incredible chemistry present in their traditional back-and-forth delivery, attain a new level of remarkable synergy in their rhymes. The album features legendary indie rap icon Sage Francis, as well as Strange Famous Re-cords cohorts Prolyphic and Buddy Peace.

Originally released by Seattle’s Skrocki Records, this run of Death Cab for Cutie’s classic album Transatlanti-cism on cassette was released in 2004, long before the current cassette craze. Arthur Russell’s most extraordinary work, “World Of Echo” is reissued in this remastered vinyl edition by Audika Records. 18 tracks are featured including drumless versions of his Disco classics “Let’s Go Swim-ming”, “Tree House”, and “Wax The Van” along with four previously unreleased tracks. Originally released in 1986, “World Of Echo” is a deeply intimate and meditative work of awe-inspiring grace and remains a timeless work of sublime beauty. Arthur’s aim was to achieve what he calls “the most vivid rhythmic reality”, with just cello, voice, and echoes. Arthur achieved all of this and more on one of the most incredible albums you will ever hear.

Compiled from over eight hours of material, Love Is Overtaking Me reaches back further to Russell’s first compositions from the early ‘70s, the most rare and, at the same time, arguably the most accessible part, comprising 21 demos and home recordings of unreleased pop, folk, and country songs selected by Audika’s Steve Knutson, Ernie Brooks, and Russell’s companion, Tom Lee. A number of the songs here feature promi-nently in the film Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell.

The compilation that started the renaissance. In 2002 Audika Records entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with the estate of Arthur Russell to compile and issue previously unreleased and out of print material from Arthur’s vast archive.

An ‘instrumental’ by definition is a song without words. But what record collector geeks like myself know is that there are two scenarios for every classic in the Great Instrumental Songbook. Either that song started out with words and a garage band turned it into a guitar instrumental, or, once an instrumental became a hit, some aspiring knucklehead came along and wrote words to it. In case you’re confused, imagine Bill Murray’s classic lounge singer character on ‘Saturday Night Live’ belting out drunken made up lyrics to the ‘Star Wars Theme.’ It can be done, it has been done, and these songs truly come alive once you hear them sung...with words! In this case, America’s #1 Instrumental combo (Los Straitjackets) and I decided that 6 knuckleheads were better than one and that joining forces for an album’s worth of vocal instrumentals was yet another mountain that needed be to climbed. It is the first album of its kind, and it is required to be in your collection. Perfect for parties, wait until your guests have a few beers in them and throw this sucker on and turn it up loud. Mr. Mitch is one of a group of producers who have re-envisioned Grime in the last few years, infecting the scene with a progressive and often surprising energy. And so this four tracker, which drops before his debut album ‘Parallel Memories’, is a short but brilliant showcase of his delicate use of Grime’s speed and sound and his ability to take it somewhere else. The record starts with Boxed anthem ‘Don’t Leave’ which chops and screws a repeated acapella, with spaced drum hits and light drizzly chords. It sounds extra sad and emotionally desolate, but within the Grime grid, it still feels tough. ‘Be Somebody’ elevates the mood, breath-ing in some much needed sunlight with a graceful twinkling melody and a hopeful but shy vocal refrain which complement each other perfectly over snapping claps and snares, all pivoting on a heavy sub bass. ‘Padded’ builds incredibly slowly, a tender melody snaking out across a simple kick and some exhausted sounding hand claps. The melody builds very gently and the track peaks midway with a contrasting noise that seems to shatter the track apart. ‘Oh’ finishes the EP, mixing slower criss-crossing drums with gently warping vocals that drift in and out of the mix while a soft marimba runs underneath. This is music that deserves to find a likeminded audience, progressive and not afraid of emotional depth

When it comes to lost or unreleased albums, most have stories that are far more compelling than their actual musical content. But the intriguing narrative here is just how wonderful these songs are! This collection, whose title translates as “The Sufferings and Ecstasies of Young Love”, is full of euphoric uppers and depressing downers that float across genres as Muro lets his young emotions flow through catchy garage rockers to smooth AM gold ballads to arena-ready prog pop anthems to the the analog synthesizer compositions for which he is best known. While comparisons could be made to anyone from The Zombies to Todd Rundgren to Carole King to Pilot to Elton John to Boston, the voice and direction throughout is distinctively Don Muro, who wrote, performed and recorded every note on the record. It is sincerely an honor to be able to share them with

If you’ve lived anywhere near Fullerton, California over the last decade, or if you’ve paid any attention to the recent flux of sun-baked, surf-soaked power pop proliferating along the Western coastline of the U.S. in recent years, chances are high you’ve taken notice of Orange County’s rambunctious guitar pop mavens Audacity. And if you’ve taken in Fullerton’s pride-and-joy both in a sweaty, dingy live environment and on your turntable, you’re undoubtedly aware that there is a certain unbridled quality to the band that can’t quite be replicated on record. While last year’s Butter Knife LP came pretty damn close, they’ve finally captured the triumphant bedlam of their live show with their latest 7”. “Counting the Days” b/w “Mind Your Own Business” is available worldwide on vinyl and digital formats courtesy of Suicide Squeeze Records. The vinyl version is limited to 750 copies and includes a download coupon.

For much of the Brooklyn duo’s career, Beacon has worked with a kind of effervescent, forward-looking R&B that evokes out-of-body experiences, but with their new L1 EP, the music is anchored assuredly to your flesh, bone, and physical senses. The brawny synth timbres which open lead track “Fault Lines” and the stomping beats bolstering gauzy falsettos on confident songs like “Minor Structure” set the tone for a new phase in Beacon’s evolution, one geared toward the movements and magnetism of human bodies. As producer Jacob Gossett puts it, “Our records have often been described as moments after the night has given way, a ‘comedown after the club.’ Hopefully, this record inspires people to go back out for one more.”

Back in 2009, Suicide Squeeze Records labelmates These Arms Are Snakes and The Coathangers teamed up for a series of tour dates on the East Coast. It was a perfect pairing: The Coathangers’ jagged catabolic garage rock and These Arms Are Snakes bleary and blighted artcore made for an evening of celebratory chaos. But These Arms Are Snakes’ seven-year run came to an abrupt end a few months later, leaving a final unfinished recording - a cover of Lost Sounds’ “Energy Drink & The Long Walk Home” - gathering dust in the vaults. Though These Arms Are Snakes remain broken up, the finishing touches on “Energy Drink” were finally wrapped up in 2014, and it seemed only appropriate to pair the song with a track from their old tourmates. The Coathangers are still hard at work touring on their highly lauded album from earlier this year, Suck My Shirt, but they found the time to counterbalance the Snakes’ Lost Sounds cover with their take on The Gun Club’s “Sex Beat”. Suicide Squeeze is proud to release the split single worldwide on a limited vinyl run of 1,000 (clear w/ red and black splatter) 7”s.

Continuing in the tradition of Tennessee-based garage revivalists like Jack Oblivian and Jay Retard, PUJOL serves up lo-fi, high-energy raw rock & roll at a prolific rate.

Russian Circles was formed in Chicago in 2004 by guitarist Mike Sullivan and drummer Dave Turncrantz. The trio’s 2006 debut, Enter, quickly established the band amongst heavy instruments peers. With the addition of former Botch and These Arms Are Snakes bassist Brian Cook on their second album, Station, Russian Circles solidified its lineup. To date the band has released 5 critically-praised albums and continues to headline tours worldwide. In celebration of Russian Circles’ 10th anniversary, Sargent House is proud to announce a re-issue of the band’s critically acclaimed debut full length, 2006’s Enter. Recorded over the course of five quick days with Greg Norman (Guided By Voices, Pelican, Neurosis) at the renowned Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago, Enter contains only six tracks, but they pack a lot into them – the album clocks in at 44 minutes. Each song flows into the next as if the record were one single composition in six movements.

For their sixth album, the band turns to the production od Richard Swift (Black Keys, The Shins, Foxygen) for a darker and sexier sound, to compliment the Tahiti 80 brand of catchy dance vibes.
