TosHIBA’s cusTomER-cEnTRIc APPRoAcH To quAlITy While optimising the quality of individual notebook components and features is an important aspect of quality, Toshiba’s quality concept entails a more holistic approach to creating products that deliver customer value or, in the case of mobile professional, business value. Quality stems from a customer-focused needs analysis process that feeds into development, product design, testing and manufacturing. In turn, the product aims to meet concrete user needs and deliver business value.

Gathering customer requirements is a complex process that includes customer surveys, focus groups, analyst data, feedback from the services and support group, reseller/channel surveys and input from product managers who talk to clients. Together this qualitative and quantitative data allow Toshiba to identify what features of a product are considered essential to delivering on the promise of quality. For instance, Toshiba easyGuard was developed as a result of customer surveys that asked business users to identify their top mobile computing concerns. Security, protection and connectivity were identified as the three most important mobility concerns. In response, Toshiba designed business notebooks that contain an array of innovative features that meet customer requirements for a high-quality mobile working experience. examples of some of the high-quality Toshiba easyGuard features include:

advanced security features such as Trusted platform module (TPM); Fingerprint reader, the viewing angle Control Filter (vaCF) lCd and more

enhanced protection features such as Toshiba raId, Toshiba anti-theft Protection Timer, Shock Protection design and more

simplified connectivity features such as Toshiba ConfigFreeTM, the diversity antenna, Toshiba Wireless Key log-on and more

Gathering requirements about desired product features, key business issues and important technology concerns is the essential to the Toshiba quality process.

3. HAlT TEsTIng foR ImPRovED DuRABIlITy recent Toshiba notebooks, such as the Tecra a8, are developed using HalT (Highly accelerated life Test) testing. What does this typically mean? With HalT, the notebook undergoes a combination of stress tests that simulate the challenges a notebook will face during its lifetime. HalT testing allows Toshiba engineers to identify and correct weak points of a particular notebook design. Typical ‘need for improvements’ found:

soldering weak points

loose screws

weak harness area

weak connector joints

bad components

The result is a more durable notebook that is less likely to suffer hardware failures during its lifecycle. Quality through HalT means greater durability for mobile used and reduced servicing is required.

TyPIcAl TEsTs Run DuRIng HAlT

10 minutes of notebook exposure at temperatures under -5o C, followed by 10 minutes of exposure at +70o C

Six alternating cycles of stress testing processes are run to ensure that the notebook can withstand significant mobility challenges

45G of pressure is exerted while running 6 cycles back and forth

HALT testing chambers Specialised chambers that are cooled by liquid nitrogen provide rapid thermal transitions. as well, repetitive shock vibrations are achieved by mechanisms that allow testing involving 3 rotations on 3 axes at the same time.

5. BusInEss vAluE The value that technology offers to enterprises goes beyond the price of a particular IT product and considers the costs and value of the technology in terms of the overall impact on the business. It is not just about the cost of the technology or the amount of savings it produces. For enterprises today, business value can be measured in terms of:

reduced costs

lower TCO (Total Cost of Ownership)

improved ROI (Return on Investment)

improved business effectiveness

REDucED cosTs High-quality products lead to direct savings in terms of support costs, capital costs and communications costs. Products designed for a more challenging mobile environment lead to direct savings of support costs. Some examples include:

TPM that provides security onboard at no extra cost

Toshiba’s Shock Protection system to protect components, screens and data

Spill-resistant Keyboards to prevent expensive data loss in the even of an accidental spill

However, business value is also the result of avoiding certain costs. a robust design helps to prevent complete system failure and results in an extended lifecycle for the notebook within a company. This durability in turn, can lead to lower capital costs as notebooks do not require unexpected replacement. Software utilities, such as ConfigFree, and features, such as Toshiba’s diversity antennae, simplify the challenge of wireless networking and improve the efficiency of network connectivity. easy access to enterprise networks and databases as well as improved network coverage result in increased business productivity.

loWER Tco Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) remains one of the key ways to measure the effective-ness of a company’s IT investment. Typically, a TCO model for IT takes into account such considerations as the initial purchase price, repairs, maintenance, upgrades, service and support, networking, security, user training, etc.

If we take the case of the Tecra a8, the TCO model is very attractive because

the initial purchase price is competitive.

the system is less prone to breakdowns.

the system is less susceptible to wear and tear.

uptime is protected.

data is protected against risks of loss, theft, tampering corruption.

connectivity is made easy for maximum productivity and optimal customer relationship management.

less time/money is spent on repairs.
