Arthur Lopez, a computer sci-ence and computer applicationsteacher at Sweetwater High in Na-

tionalCity,wasn’tOKwith that.Sothrougha jointeffortbetween

the district, San Diego Supercom-puter Center and UC San DiegoCenter forResearchonEducationalEquity, Assessment, and TeachingExcellence, that would soonchange.

Lopez has taught in the Sweet-water district nearly 30 years andatSweetwater High since 1990. In 2011

he said he was shocked to find thatstudents in the South Bay weren’tbeingofferedanopportunitytotakecomputer science classes.

Lopez said there’s not currentlya state computer science courselisted as a graduating requirementfor high schools and that needs tochange.

“We’re living in an age wherecomputers are embedded in ourdaily lives,” Lopez said. “How canyou not have a class that’s part ofpubliceducationandnothavethem

Computer Science Prin-cipals, a class that Lopezteaches, is an introductorycomputer science coursethat deals with a fundamen-tal understanding of com-puting, computation think-ing and understanding howcomputers operate.

“Computer science edu-cation provides a gateway tosomanydifferent fields,”Lo-pez said. “My job is toexposethese opportunities to kids.”

Lopez had no computerscience background whenhe began working withDiane Baxter, former direc-tor of education for SanDie-go Supercomputer Centerand Beth Simon, with Ja-cobs School of Engineeringat UC San Diego, through aprogram funded by the Na-tional Science FoundationcalledComputingPrinciplesforAll Students’ Success.

The Center and UC SanDiego gave Lopez the train-ing he needed to offer com-puter science courses to stu-dents and by the time hecompleted it, he was a mas-

ter teacher in the subjectand a curriculum writer forthe UC San Diego CollegeBoard.

Today, there are a num-ber of courses on computerscience principles availableto Sweetwater district stu-dents.

“The great thing aboutcomputer science is it teach-es kids communication, col-laboration, how to think andanalysis problem solving,”Lopez said. “They are usefulskills for the realworld.”

TheU.S.BureauofLaborStatistics projects that by2020, information technolo-gy skills and computationalthinking will be needed inmore thanhalf of all jobs, ac-cording to theSanDiegoSu-percomputer Center web-site.

Today Lopez teaches hispeers throughout the regionhow to teach computer sci-ence courses. “The benefit isseeing students transforminfrontofyoubecauseof thiscourse,” Lopez said. “I’veseen students transformtheir grades in all otherclasses after taking a com-puter science course. Theclass opens up a whole newworld for them.”

The district now has a

number of computer sciencecourses, several of which areAdvanced Placement class-es that encourage studentsto continue their education.

While at the summit,Karla spoke to a panel thatincluded the White Houseadviser and teachers, ex-plaining what she learnedfrom the class and how itchangedher.

She shared that shedidn’t take a computer sci-ence course until this yearbecause she thought itwould be difficult based oncommentsmadebyhermalepeers. “I was super intimi-dated, but when I took theclass I found it wasn’t as dif-ficult as they said.”

The experience has en-couragedher topursuecom-puter science in college. She

has applied to UCSD andCal Poly San Luis Obispo. “Iwould be the first going tocollege frommy family. I feellike it’s really important forwomenandLatinasbecausewebringa lot to the table.”

Karla said that taking acomputer science class,which ultimately allowedher to travel to Boston andrepresent her school, city,gender and ethnicity, hasgreatly improved her confi-dence. “I used to be quietand shy. I’m a lotmoremoti-vated now. I feel like I couldfollowmy dreams of becom-ing a computer scientist.”

Lopez said he was grate-ful to share the experiencewithhis student.

“To get your studentelected in something likethat it was priceless,” hesaid. “She was in incrediblerepresentative of Sweetwa-ter High School, NationalCity. I think she has a wholeworld that’s just opened upfor her.”

Karla is expected toshare her experience withSweetwater district trusteesat a Januaryboardmeeting.

A wall of water floodedthe entire valley, wiping outthe town of Otay, the ChulaVista Salt Works and hun-dredsof farms.

Many Japanese farmers,working in the valley at thetime, ran to higher groundbut 11 of them living belowthedamwerekilled.

The flood carried debrisand topsoil into San DiegoBay, forming shoals that fil-led the south end of the bay,blocking ship channels foryears.

TheSouthBayHistoricalSociety is currently workingwiththeChulaVistaFireDe-partment to extract a large300-pound piece of the Otaydam for the exhibit, expect-ed to feature more than 100

historical photographs re-lated to the flood.

The first sectionof theex-hibit will feature the histori-cal context of 1916, the longdrought that began in 1911and the work of Charles“Rainmaker”Hatfield.

The San Diego CityCouncil hired Hatfield toproduce rain in the hopes ofending the drought.He built

platforms near the MorenaResevoir to releasehis secretmixture of chemicals intothe air around Jan. 1, 1916.OnJan. 5 rainbegan. It camedown in torrents for the re-mainder of themonth.

In fact,morerain fell thanhad ever been recorded for atwo-weekperiod inthehisto-ry of the South Bay, accord-ing to thehistorical society.

The rain filled the Sweet-water Reservoir until theabutments above and belowthe dam gave way, unleash-ing a tsunami-type wall ofwater into the valley.

Thesecondpartof theex-hibit will show the devasta-tion caused by the flood inthe Tijuana, Otay andSweetwaterRiver valleys.

Rivercanyonswereflood-ed and bridges destroyed,along with water pipelinesand the local railroad. TheTijuana River tore into Ti-juana and destroyed the vil-lageofLittleLanders.

The earthen dike on thelow side of the reservoir alsobroke, sendinganother floodof water down the canyonpast Central Avenue (in

Bonita). The Friend’sChurch washed away andthe Sunnyside school wasdamaged.

The Sweetwater Wom-an’s Club house and the li-brary inside were swept intothe bay. The gardens andfields belonging to Chineseworkers who helped buildthedam in1888werealsode-stroyed. Therewasnodrink-ing water in the South Bayfor threeweeks.

The third part of the ex-hibit will show recovery ef-forts after the flood. TheNa-vysentareliefexpeditionun-der Lt. Willis W. Bradley Jr.,commanderof theUSSLaw-rence.

Tijuana moved to higherground, and horse racing re-sumed at the Tijuana Race-track.

The Lower Otay Damwas rebuilt and more damswereaddedto theSouthBaywatersheds, including Bar-rett in 1922, Rodriguez in1936, Judson in 1937 andLoveland in 1945.
