SPONSOR’S MESSAgE

O-I is the world’s leading glass container manufacturer and is passionate about the pure, sustainable, brand-building glass packaging it has produced for more than 100 years.

As a major supplier to Australia and New Zealand’s beer industry, O-I is proud to be the official sponsor of The Beer & Brewer Awards and congratulates the people and brands behind the innovative array of beverages available in today’s market.

O-I is a big believer in the ability of packaging to influence consumer preferences and recently completed research to better understand those preferences.

Beer buyers were asked to choose their favourite brand in their preferred packaging. 79% of respondents chose their brand in a glass bottle over other packaging types and of those respondents, 46% said they would rather switch to another brand in glass than consume their desired brand from a non-glass packaging container such as a can.

As consumers consistently recognise glass as the superior packaging choice it’s no surprise that it continues to be used by brands to ensure what’s inside looks and tastes its best. Another plus? Glass is 100% recyclable, forever.

the Australian Brewery prides itself on producing fresh, pure, Australian

beer. Using no preservatives or artificial additives, the brewing team has a recipe for success – at least according to Beer & Brewer readers that is. Facing off some stiff competition, AB Pale Lager triumphed as the reader’s choice winner with its use of pale and wheat malt to create the lightest of colours, while the addition of plenty of Kiwi and US hops creates a bitter yet balanced Lager.

local folklore pits the Murphy’s drinkers of Cork against the

Guinness drinkers of Dublin and long has been the rivalry between the brands. Murphy’s is seen as the craft-style version and is a lighter and sweeter dry stout. Its flavour is of caramel and malt and – free from carbonation – should be served with an inch of thick, foaming head on top. It is brewed to be less heavy and less bitter than other Irish Stouts making it a popular import around the country.

established in 2010, the Australian Brewery has become a pillar of

its local community, making it no surprise that it took out the People’s Choice Award for Best Beer Venue. The award-winning brewery pumps out fresh brews to compliment the family-friendly atmosphere and the Australian produce-based menu. The hotel is a kid-friendly venue, meaning that beer fans can relax with family and friends while enjoying a quality brew making the venue a winning choice with fans.

Mountain Goat (Vic)

Much-loved Melbourne brewery Mountain Goat is onto a good

thing with its environmentally-friendly cellar door. Entertaining throngs of beer fans in its reclaimed interior every Wednesday and Friday, the venue has the whole range of Mountain Goat brews on tap as well as a range of pizzas hot from the oven. But what really captures fans imaginations are the inventive combinations in the hopinator (called Randy), such as Rapunzel Belgian Blond run through orange and star anise, not to mention the specialty brews on offer at the bar. The Goat team are well-known for their Rare Breed range and there is a certain portion of these brews that never leave the brewery, making each visit a potential goldmine for those who love something a little bit different. Wednesday night also sees the team running brewing tours for hordes of curious fans, and as the team are usually still hard at work, it’s a great opportunity for drinkers to quiz them about what’s brewing.

what has to be Australia’s most awarded boutique beer café has

been a stalwart on the brewing scene in Australia since 2004.

Partnering with the venue’s great beers is their range of fresh modern cuisine – with a few, appropriate beer-themed items like chocolate and beer truffles and their much-loved beer sorbets – that caters to their hungry inner city clientele.

each dish is also expertly paired with one or more of the European-style brews, while staff will expertly talk diners through potentaila and selected beer and food matches.

For those that can’t decide the $20 tasting boards offer a choice selection of morsels – in meat, vegetarian, seafood and cheese options – each matched with a beer from the range.

Additionally dedicated beertenders – including a previous Beer & Brewer Beertender of the Year Simon Beveridge – can recommend beers to suit any patron’s tastes, making Redoak a full service beer café.

ten years after it first opened – and after recent renos – the Little

Creatures venue at Fremantle is still at the top of its game. The iconic industrial venue serves the brand’s award-winning beers straight from the conditioning tanks, while diners can lazily watch the beer being brewed while chowing down on the venue’s extremely popular restaurant selection – and gents can also get a lovely view of the bottling line from the loo. With share plates and well-known woodfired pizzas promptly served in the spacious dining area it is a tough call for punters to decide what is better – the beer of the food. But there is more to this venue than meets the eye. With visitors treated to a one-off experimental keg every Thursday at 4pm, bocce games in the back garden, and the Creatures Loft – with local and imported beers on tap – for after hours entertainment, as well as brewery tours at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm everyday, the venue is so much more than just a simple brew bar and restaurant.

the Albion may have begun its life looking like every other pub in

Newcastle, but these days it is well-known as the Novocastrians’ beer venue of choice.

As well as helping organise Newcastle Craft Beer Week, the Albion features a range of rotating taps to tempt locals and passers-through with the very best from the Australian and international craft beer scene.

The fridges are also crammed with the best bottled product around and the food definitely rates a mention – these guys were the first gastropub to kick off in town – the modern cuisine complements the brews on offer and adds another element to this great regional venue.

The Albion proves that not only is Newcastle a place to watch on the craft beer front but also that great venues are not solely found in the capital cities in each state.

the Wheaty is a venue that prides itself on being different. There are

no pokies, televisions, fancy cocktails or alcopops.

Instead there is just a great atmosphere and an impeccable selection of beer to tempt any fan of the amber nectar. Run by three beer-loving ladies, the pub is certainly a highlight on the list of any beer fan in Adelaide and a must-visit destination for those interested in something other than churches when travelling to the southern state’s capital city.

With a custom renovated beer system (that’s 12 taps, a handpump, the Glasshopper hop-infuser, and fridge space for a multitude of bottled product), a beer menu that includes the best of Australia’s microbreweries (as well as the occasional one-off brew from a local micro), and Meet the Brewer nights once a month, The Wheaty has the beer venue genre well and truly stitched up.

o riginally the brainchild of a beer loving Aussie of Belgian ancestry,

the Beer Cartel business began its life as an online beer club before rapidly expanding into the powerhouse that it is today.

Taking over a liquor store in Artarmon, Sydney, as well as maintaining their online community of beer lovers, Beer Cartel is all about offering the very best – and most obscure – brews from Australia and around the world to the ever increasing number of beer lovers who want to try something a little different.

As well as stocking hundreds of bottled beers the team offer a growler filling station, giving their clients easy access to beers that would normally have to be tasted on-premise or even just drunk at the brew-bars where the beer is produced.

With expert staff, a thriving beer club, and a range of beer experiences on offer, Beer Cartel is much more than just a local bottlo.

w ith so many great venues around the country, there is plenty of

competition in this category. However, Beer DeLuxe Fed Square triumphed with their flair for finding the weird and the wonderful. Enclosed in a 26 page document (including a glossary of key terms) the Beer DeLuxe Beer List is certainly a sight to behold and definitely holds with the venue’s solemn undertaking to have a constantly evolving beer list so that their customers can experiment and discover new things. And with their rotating taps and fridges packed with bottled product, the venue certainly lives up to that promise. What makes this beer list even greater though, is the occasional presence of kegs that normally would never escape the brewbars in which they are made, and even the odd brew that has been specially created for the venue – often for one of its themed events. Add to that a staff that really knows beer and Beer DeLuxe is skating pretty close to beer list nirvana.

ostensibly the home of the craft beer revolution that seeded in

Australia back in the 80s – the blokes from here have variously had a hand in the brewpub revolution, and the founding of Matilda Bay and Little Creatures – the Sail & Anchor is truly a beer-lovers venue.

Although the brewhouse may be out of action these days, the pub features 40-plus beer taps, and a couple of handpumps, which proudly promote brews from West Australian micros, breweries all over Australia and the very best of imported beers.

For the beer lover there is also quality food, a well-trained staff on hand to give advice and tasting paddles for those who simply cannot decide what to try first.

And rather than leave it there, Sail & Anchor holds regular beer events such as tap showcases, homebrewing competitions, brewer events and even the launch of the Sail & Anchor craft beer range during WA Beer Week 2012.

websites are often a much neglected part of the brewing and

beer retailing industry. There is often a dearth of places for interested visitors and curious fans to find detailed information. The Local Taphouse has created not just one but two websites (one for each location) ensuring that their fans can not only keep up with what is on that month but also stay on top of what happens to be gracing the rotating taps and ever-changing fridges at each location.

An inner Sydney haven for beer fans, Oak Barrel has built a

loyal online fan base via its regular, informative e-newsletters, that feature news, events and interactive multimedia content. Rather than simply functioning as a catalogue, the e-newsletter informs and entertains readers with notes on new stock as well as videos of tastings and more. Created with time and care the content is a key business driver for the shop, creating website traffic as well as calling customers to action.

B itter & Twisted is one of the most unique beer festivals in the world.

Taking place in the historic Maitland Gaol, the festivities make the most of their surroundings, playing off the high security buildings that once housed some of the country’s most notorious criminals – not in the least, the infamous backpacker murderer Ivan Milat. And the beer fans and brewers love it, with producers coming from all over Australia – even producing special brews for the day – to take part in the two day event. Getting bigger and better every year, the event has entertainment from well-known musicians, and quirky performers to entertain the crowds that relax at Her Majesty’s pleasure in the old exercise yard and around the buildings. With beer and food matching lunches, roving entertainers and interactive social media interfaces, Bitter & Twisted is certainly not one to be missed on the beer festival circuit this November.

the Malt Shovel Brewery is becoming well-known for their

inventive small batch brews – created on the brewery’s pilot plant before being scaled-up – as well as their interesting campaigns. With the label doing the hard yards and double-timing as the beers’ advertisement, the artwork on both bottles is at once interesting, intriguing and incredibly simple. There is no need for high-cost TV commercials, with the labels creating instant recognition as well as interest in the brand.

instead of simply producing a beer, Arvo launched an initiative to create

the world’s first crowd-sourced beer. While gathering intel from drinkers through an iPhone app, voters were asked to submit details about their beer preferences. This information was then collated and two different Lagers created by the brewing team. The successful brew (the more mellow Batch 51) was crowned Arvo and is now readily available in bottleshops.

Known for being an incredibly humble man, Sherlock was close to

speechless as he accepted his award for Brewer of the Year for 2012. Speaking to the crowd after his win, Sherlock claimed the award was for the whole brewery and great recognition of the hard work the whole team puts into creating quality beer. Like a lot of craft brewers Sherlock began his career as an obsessive homebrewer who could be found, every weekend, in his backyard brewing. “It kind of took over my life there for a while,” he says. “And eventually my partner encouraged me to stop pretending to be an academic and to give commercial brewing a crack.” That decision landed him at Murray’s where, after three years the original head brewer packed off back to NZ, leaving Sherlock to take up the reigns, and follow his passion for interesting beer. “Watson and I also talk a lot of crap in the brewery – it drives Craig mad,” he says. “And a lot of ideas come from conversations that start with ‘what if we did this…’”.

for this talented young brewer, his journey into brewing began much

like any other: with a passion for the amber nectar and a whole lot of determination. His proximity to the Feral Brewing Co, probably didn’t hurt either. Irving tried numerous times to get work experience at the brewery but it wasn’t until Head Brewer Brendan Varis bought out his partners that he was able to take the first step along the road to brewing glory, as Feral’s sales rep. But it wasn’t long before Varis spotted his talents and taught him the ropes in the brewery at one point leaving Irving in charge of the brewery while he travelled to the US. Currently studying for his brewing qualifications by correspondence, Irving’s dedication and talent mean that he is certainly a face to watch in the industry. And his sense of humour is not to be underestimated either – during Irving’s acceptance speech he joked that it was about time that he was given his own award, seeing it was all his hard physical labour that was bringing Brendan’s ideas to life.

while Terlick’s nomination in the awards might have come as a

surprise to him, his win was certainly not a surprise to the judging panel after Terlick wowed them with his knowledge of and love for beer. After giving up bartending for plumbing, Terlick returned to his passion a few years back, starting his current position at Cowaramup and igniting his passion for craft beer. And while he admits to not knowing everything, he is dedicated to converting people to the joy of beer. He so enjoys his beer evangelism that it no longer surprises him when people who don’t like beer leave cradling a pint of Ale. And while requests for beers tasting like VB or Corona are not uncommon, Terlick is always up for the challenge of finding a beer that each person will enjoy. After all, it isn’t so long since he was only drinking more mainstream brews himself. And it was this attitude, passion and willingness to listen that gave Terlick his winning edge.

Utilising the brewery’s traditional sense of humour – they do make Fat Yak beer after all – the name apparently comes from the much darker, almost dirty rustic colour of the cider – compared to other ciders – as well as the juicy, fresh ‘Granny Smith’ apple taste. According to the brewery, the cider is much darker and drier than a lot of other ciders on the market, with no added sugar, and has been brewed at lower gravity to ensure integrated and robust flavours.

english Cider stalwarts Thatchers use all English cider apples for

the production of their award-winning cider, including Dabinett and Somerset Redstreak varieties, creating a bittersweet cider. This traditional cider brand sources their ingredients from the West Country, from orchards that use old-school fruit growing methods to create quality ingredients for their signature ciders, including Green Goblin. This year’s best imported cider is aged in 100-year-old oak vats, creating a cider with unique character and flavour. The resulting product is then blended before being bottled for sale. As a company Thatchers combines the latest modern innovations and technology alongside original recipes and techniques used in the 1900s.

this year’s winner of Best Beer for Australia certainly didn’t

surprise many beer fans by winning back-to-back Best Beer titles. Feral is a stalwart of the Australian brewing industry – picking up the coveted 2012 trophy for Best Large Brewery at the Australian International Beer Awards – and their Hop Hog brew is certainly a national favourite, constantly receiving awards and love from beer fans. Apparently Hop Hog is one of the only beers that Head Brewer Brendan Varis hasn’t really tweaked since its creation – the recipe was tasted then the beer was ready to go. At this year’s AIBA, Hop Hog won the brewery the Best International Pale Ale trophy, and stylistically the brewery calls it a 5.8% ABV American-style India Pale Ale. Weighing in at 48 IBU (International Bittering Units) Varis has added a load of American Hops both during the boil and late in the fermenting stage. This gives Hop Hog a strong pine needle and citrus aroma, with a strong dose of bitterness and a dry finish.

rogue’s award-winning brew certainly follows the current trend

of intense IPA-style beers sweeping the major award categories the world over. The American brewery took home two huge awards in the World Beer Awards in 2012, claiming the fiercely contested gongs of America’s Best IPA and the World’s Best IPA – a huge achievement. The well-established brewery – they first opened their doors in 1988 – names this brew as the official beer of their Rogue Nation fan club, and use a combination of local Oregon hops and English malts to create their powerhouse brew. The signature – and only – hop style used in the brew is the Crystal hop, which is a triploid variety that was bred from the German Hallertau aroma hop, using characteristics from the Cascade, Brewers Gold, and Early Green hop varieties. According to the team at Rogue this hop variety provides a massive amount of aroma without the need to dry hop. The brew has a massive citrus hit with peppery hops and a long bittersweet finish.

the Wheatsheaf is more than just a good pub, it is a full service

venue. Winning Best Large Pub means The Wheaty has its section of the market stitched up, creating a venue for punters to relax in while enjoying a good brew. And with an impressive list of local and imported craft beers, along with exclusive kegs, a handpump and the much-loved Glasshopper flavour infuser, The Wheaty was a well-deserved runner up in the Best Beer List award for 2012. But more than that, The Wheatsheaf’s grasp of new media is what sets them above and beyond. Apart from making the finalists list for Best Website, they came runner up in the eNewsletter award – using their online reach to engender loyalty and keep their fans informed of what is on. And if there was an award for Best App, these guys would win it. With cutting edge technology, Wheaty fanatics are constantly fed information about events, new beers being tapped and what is hitting the fridges.

the people of New Zealand have spoken. First up is HopWired by

8 Wired Brewing Co. A New World IPA, it fits nicely into current drinking trends. As a point of difference, this IPA is brewed with NZ grown Pale Ale malt and 100% unique NZ hops. With plenty of citrus and pine scented hops and enough malt sweetness to hold it all together, Hopwired is a winner.

on the other hand McCashin’s Stoke Bomber Bohemian Ale,

nicely straddles the divide between Ale and Lager. This beer, from one of NZ’s premier beer producing families, has plenty of malt, rounded out by a tart, crisp finish. This hybrid style ticks all the boxes when it comes to drinkability, making it a popular choice with Kiwi drinkers.

the newly renovated Monteith’s cellar door in Greymouth certainly

has people talking with the new purpose-designed café and bar, and re-vamped brewery tours. The fully equipped bar has an extensive range of Monteith’s brews on tap as well as a range of exclusive, innovative brews that are exclusively produced and sold at the brewery door by the team at Greymouth. The new brewery tour and tasting includes an interactive history of the brewery – beer fans can witness the making of beer in open fermenters by coal-fired boilers, and check out the unique machinery that has been custom designed – then continues into the bar to learn about the beers’ origins and taste profiles, before tasting each style. Finally, attendees play barkeep, pulling their own beer from the selection of taps behind the bar. Punters can also relax in the purpose built café with a few brews or, for those that are peckish, there is a selection of fine local foods that have been matched to the beers on offer to provide the full gourmet experience.

opened in 1995 this brew-pub is housed in the historic surrounds

of an early 20th century building that held the Grafton Library. Galbraith’s is a traditional brewery, located within the pub, and use traditional brewing methods to produce a range of much-loved and well-patronised beer styles. The brewers’ dedication to quality is shown through their use of the highest quality ingredients, which they import themselves. And it goes without saying that every beer produced in the brewery is free from preservatives, chemicals and artificial flavourings – in fact the origins of every ingredient in every pint can be traced back from brewery to source, such is the dedication of the brewers. The beers are of course, backed up by the creative, fresh and locally sourced food produced in the brew-pub restaurant. With ingredients received fresh daily and meals made to order, there is as much care taken in the kitchen as there is in the brewhouse.

The venue is an underground temple to beer that is also famed for their fusion Japanese/Kiwi food, including a rotating range of pies that many fans follow almost as closely as they keep tabs on the beer list. Rather than waiting around to see what beers would make it to the land of the long white cloud, Hashigo Zake simply started importing a range of beers from breweries in Australia, Japan, the US and Europe, creating the ‘cult’ following that deservedly won them this award. With cool music and friendly service, this venue is a must-visit.

B illed as the most exciting beer list in New Zealand, Hashigo Zake

certainly lives up to the hype, with an ever-changing array of beers both on tap and in bottles – some of which you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the country. Owner Dominic Kelly was so determined to stock the obscure international beers that he was after that he started his own beer import business. Hashigo’s rotating beer list is available for perusal online and at the time of print was set to feature such gems as Mikkeller Big Worse Barley Wine, 8 Wired Grand Cru, Golden Bear Oatmeal Stout and Baird Teikoku IPA. And don’t forget the close to 200 bottled beer varieties stocked in their fridges. The bar’s hip underground premises also has a carefully curated range of wines, whiskies, ciders and sakes on offer.

Christchurch gladly continues the rich beer tradition of their venue. As well as maintaining over 20 taps of prize-winning beers, the Old Brewery Inn retains the horse bays where grain was delivered and stored, as well as remaking the old brewery office into a library that has walls lined with books and references to early Christchurch for punters to peruse while enjoying the beer selection. Family-owned, and operated by Steve and Victoria Pomeroy, the former’s work with the beer list and the latter’s flair for food ensure that Pomeroy’s is a firm favourite with locals. With an English pub-style atmosphere, the venue is a haven for lovers of local beers with some of New Zealand’s best on tap alongside a range of beers brewed for the venue – including plenty of seasonal and limited edition brews to mix things up a bit.

Scott Boswell at The Hop Garden.

scott Boswell began his beer career, like most 18-year-olds, drinking

mainstream brews. However, Boswell was lucky enough to find himself working at the Malthouse and, as they say, the rest is history. Golden Lager was his gateway beer but, as he has experimented more, his tastes now lie more in the hoppy end of the spectrum, with Pale Ales and IPAs in general at the top of his list. Working at the Hop Garden since it began two years ago – and for 10 years at the Malthouse previously – Boswell has certainly had his fair share of “What tastes like Tui?” questions. So what definitely gave him his winning edge is his determination to not be a “beer snob”. He says it is all about asking questions and taking a softly, softly approach to find something from his 12 rotating taps that everyone can appreciate and enjoy. Boswell also tries to pitch his knowledge to his audience, getting technical with fellow beer lovers, but still keeping step with beer newbies.

Luke Nicholas.

Most beer fans have heard the story of Luke Nicholas

and his rapid rise from beer nut to full- blown international beer expert and the creator of some of the best loved brews in the world. He is also an international beer judge, industry commentator, founding president of SOBA, and previously vice president of the Brewers Guild of New Zealand. In other words: a very busy man. But Nicholas has perfected his virtual business model, outsourcing the brewing, warehousing, logistics and sales – and effectively using social media marketing tools – to give himself the space to both grow his award-winning beer range and expand his international reach, making Epic an in-demand brand at home as well as in Australia, the US and Europe.

Nicholas produces hop-fuelled beers that are heavily influenced by his time in the US beer industry, Epic’s brews are both intensely hopped and, as is concurred by a wide variety of beer judges, very well balanced.

Matt Warner is an award-winning brewer and brewery owner

who had the misfortune of almost becoming a lawyer. Thankfully, while at university, he began to investigate the world of homebrewing in the flat he shared in Aro Valley with fellow ParrotDog brewer Matt Kristofski. It was after this the Warner began to entertain the thoughts of opening his very own brewery. Fortunately this dream became a reality and instead of completing his bar examinations (the legal kind) ParrotDog Brewery took off and craft beer became Warner’s full time passion. With the first ParrotDog commercial brew – BitterBitch – on the market in 2011, 2012 was also a big year for the brand, seeing this talented young brewer pull together with his fellow Matts – Matt Kristofski and Matt Stevens – to open their own, brand new brewery in the heart of Wellington. ParrotDog may be a new brand, but Warner certainly has the brewing goods to ensure that he will be a face to watch for years to come.

rochdale Cider factory has been making traditional ciders since

the 1940s and since it was taken over by the McCashin family in 1980, the ciders have gone on to win awards too. A sparkling, medium dry cider, Rochdale Traditional is made in New Zealand with tree-ripened local grown apples, pure water and no preservatives. Not overly sweet, this cider is designed to be thirst-quenching and crisp.

Interestingly, Rochdale Cider is made with Palaeo water, reportedly the purest water in the world, which is sourced from one of the oldest and purest aquifers on earth – apparently untouched for an impressive 260 centuries.

the Epic brand is well-known for its incredibly hoppy brews and

this award-winning brew is certainly no exception. Made to fit in with the intensely hopped US-style of IPAs, this beer was reportedly inspired by a hop-fuelled trip to California in 2008. There, brewer Luke Nicholas was even more inspired by the style of the IPAs coming out of breweries based on the West Coast of the US. Throw in the challenge of an IPA showdown with fellow Kiwi hop heads at the Hallertau Brewery and suddenly Nicholas had the impetus to get seriously hoppy. And the name? The brew was created during the first US hop shortage when Nicholas has no idea if he would be able to replace all the hops that he threw at this beer. With its sharp bitterness and hoppy character, this beer feeds directly into the current trend for extreme hop use, and industry-wide love of the IPA style.

Best Beer Venue for New Zealand in 2012 was a bit of a no-brainer.

Having nailed Best Small Bar and Best Beer List, never mind coming runner up for their eNewsletter places Hashigo Zake at the top when it comes to beer venues. With a rotating tap list, this so-named ‘Cult Beer Bar’ has inspired a cult following by not only stocking a range of near impossible to find beers but also by launching its very own import company to make sure that the best international brews are available, without relying on other distributors to provide them. The venue also runs the Pacific Beer Expo – a chance for Kiwis to sample the best beer from the Pacific Rim on a single day, in a single venue. Additionally, Hashigo’s online presence is strong with a website that lists not only the currently available brews but what is coming up in the near future.
