At FermiLab...
Beryllium is defined as any object that contains greater than or equal to 0.1% berylliumIncludes beryllium, beryllium alloys, and ceramic beryllia Beryllium is handled in bulk form only - no cutting, sanding, or grinding occurs on site

Ingestion
Beryllium is not intended for internal consumptionHands should be thoroughly washed after contactEating and smoking are not allowed in beryllium areas
![Page 7: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Skin Contact
Water soluble beryllium salts can cause skin irritation also called Dermatitis
If beryllium is imbedded in the skin, ulcers and corn-like lesions can develop
Skin disorders usually heal completely
![Page 8: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Inhalation - Primary Concern
Inhalation of small particles Reach into the air sacs of the lungLung has a mechanism to remove particlesProblem occurs when:
Can not remove particles as quickly as they are inhaledAllergic reaction occurs
![Page 9: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Inhalation – Primary Concern
Exposure should be kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA)Minimize…
Number of workersTime Amount of Beryllium
Currently, there are 0 employees at Fermi Lab trained as Beryllium Workers
![Page 10: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Acute Beryllium Lung Disease
Caused by inhalation of very high levels of beryllium dustsMay occur 2 weeks after exposureSymptoms are similar to those of bronchitis or pneumoniaSymptoms disappear after exposure endsRarely occurs today
![Page 11: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Chronic Beryllium Disease
Can occur when:Inhale small concentrations of beryllium over a certain time periodAND the individual has become sensitized (allergic) to beryllium
![Page 12: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Chronic Beryllium Disease
Three requirements for disease development:Individual must be sensitized to berylliumIndividual must be exposed to airborne beryllium for some amount of timeAirborne beryllium particles must be small enough to enter air sacs in the lungs
Different levels of exposure may cause this disease, depending on the individual
![Page 13: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Two Stages of CBD
Sensitization - allergic development3 - 10% of the population May develop disease at this point
Granuloma DevelopmentLung tissue is irreversibly scarredReduces ability of lung tissue to transfer oxygen to bloodParticles become lodged in lung tissue
![Page 14: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Symptoms
CoughingShortness of breathFatigueBlood in mucusChest and joint painRapid heart rateLoss of appetiteFevers and night sweats
![Page 15: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Chronic Beryllium Disease
Medical tests can determine if individuals are sensitized to beryllium
Symptoms may occur 5-10 years after exposure
No cure exists, but treatments are available
![Page 16: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Lung Cancer
Listed by OSHA as potential cancer hazardResearch continues
![Page 17: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
OSHA Exposure Limits
8 hour time weighted average - 2 µg/m3
15 minute peak exposure limit - 25 µg/m3
Exposure depends onConcentrationFrequencyDuration
These limits have greatly reduced incidence of CBD
![Page 18: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
To Minimize Your Exposure…
Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)Follow Safe Work GuidelinesPractice personal hygieneContact the Medical Department if symptoms occur
![Page 19: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Department of Energy
All DOE contractors must have a Chronic Beryllium Disease Prevention Program to address this concernMany question the adequacy of OSHA’s limits
Permissible Exposure Limit – 2 µg/m3
Action Limit – 5 µg/m3
Short term Exposure Limit - 10 µg/m3
These limits require medical surveillance and personal protection
![Page 20: Beryllium Hazard Awareness - Fermilab | Home](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022081623/613d79ab736caf36b75dc4d3/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
