SCHOOL AWARDS Congratulations to the following students who
received awards over the last week:
BERWICK LODGE FILM
FESTIVAL Excitement is building in anticipation of
our Inaugural Berwick Lodge Film
Festival! The festival will present a range
of short films and photo stories that have
been produced entirely by the students
in Years 5 and 6. Over the past weeks
of this term students have been involved
in writing scripts, devising storyboards,
making props, sourcing costumes, filming
and editing. The Year 6 students have
produced short films and the Year 5
students have developed photo stories.
The finished products will be screened at
a gala event that will take place at the
Drum Theatre in Dandenong on Monday
13th September. There will be two
screenings (5:00PM – 7:00PM and
7:30PM – 9:30PM) with a red carpet
event and ‗Lodgie Awards‘ featured as
part of both screenings.
This week I have had the pleasure of
viewing some of the finished products
and I am confident that families will enjoy
seeing our talented students at work. If
you are interested in attending tickets
can be purchased by either phoning the
theatre directly on (03)9771 6666 or by
ordering over the internet at http://
www.drumtheatre.com.au/
URGENT REMINDER - DEECD
PARENT OPINION SURVEY Please note parents that we have so far
received 39 out of the 130 parent
opinion survey requests sent home. I
understand that time is limited and
surveys can be a burden, but it is a
DEECD requirement that this survey be
conducted. A low response rate is taken
by the DEECD as a poor reflection on
our school. Please return the
completed surveys to school in the
sealed envelopes as soon as
possible.
OUTSIDE HOURS SCHOOL
CARE QUALITY ASSURANCE The Berwick Lodge - Camp Australia
OHSC program was recently involved in
the Quality Assurance Accreditation
process in line with the requirements of
Outside School Hours Care Quality
Assurance. This process involved the
completion of a self study report,
surveys of staff and children, and visits to
the program by an independent validator
appointed by the National Childcare
Accreditation Council (NCAC).
The report provided as a part of this
process recognised the high quality of
the program across all eight of the
Quality Areas. In particular the report
highlighted the ability of the staff to
communicate effectively with families,
promote inclusion, foster positive self
esteem and confidence in the children,
and collaborate with the children to plan
programs to cater for their individual
needs and interests. It also
acknowledged the commitment to
promoting safety and supporting staff to
deliver quality care.
As a school community I am sure that
you will join me in congratulating Dom
Marie and his dedicated staff on the
successful accreditation of the OHSC
program. We are very grateful to have
such a committed and high performing
team involved in delivering the OHSC
program for our families.
F R E Q U E N T L Y A S K E D
QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q: When is a good time to enrol
my child for next year?
A: Enrolments for next year are
accepted throughout the year, including
during Term 4. Having said this we do
prefer to receive Prep enrolments by
late Term 3 to enable us to make
informed decisions about our staffing and
class structures for the next year. It is
also important that Prep students are
enrolled in time to take advantage of the
Prep Transition Program that runs in
Term 4 and is invaluable in preparing the
children for a successful transition to
school. If you have not yet enrolled your
child for Prep in 2011 please do so as
soon as possible!

ASS ISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT
GOOD CHOICES, GREAT LIFE
PROGRAM
This Friday 3rd
September as
part of our term
3 Throughline –
Hea l t h and
Wellbeing we have planned a whole
school expo that focuses on health,
nutrition, recreation and leisure. This
program, ―Good Choice, Great Life‖,
includes all students in the grades Prep
to 4 areas. (Grades 5 and 6 students will
have their expo day in term 4 to
coincide with the Commonwealth
Games).
All teachers and specialist teachers will
be involved in the day as well as some
special visitors from our local commu-
nity. Some of the activities planned for
the day are Pilates, yoga, martial arts,
Jump Rope for Heart, Meditation, dance
and presentations from staff that have
expertise in the sport and health
industries.
Make sure you look out in next week‘s
newsletter for some of the student‘s
reflections about the day.
SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS - COLES
We would like to remind parents that
our school is taking part in the Coles
Sports for Schools Program to enable us to
earn credits towards purchasing addi-
tional sports equipment for our school.
From today until Sunday 31st October
2010, for every $10 spent at Coles or
Bi-Lo customers will earn a Coles Sports
for Schools voucher worth 1 point (given
at the check-out) Students collect these
vouchers from family, friends and
neighbours and bring them into their
classroom. Early in November these
vouchers will be able to be redeemed for
new sporting equipment.
BOOK FAIR
We are pleased to report that our Book
Fair, which was held in the Library last
week, was very successful. A total of
$6500 was spent by our families and this
has resulted in our school receiving 20%
commission. This means that we will
have $1300 to spend on resources for
our school library. Many thanks go to the
wonderful families who supported this
Book Fair and to the staff who gave up
their time to help with the selling of
books.
All families should have received their
receipts by now. If you have any queries,
please contact the school.
CARING FOR GRANDCHILDREN
Are you the primary carer for your
grandchildren?
We have recently received information
to pass onto any grandparents who
provide primary care for their
grandchildren. This support group
addresses issues that face grandparents
raising children today. They can assist
with locating and accessing information
and services to assist both the
grandparent and the grandchildren. The
group will meet at The Chapel, McGregor
Road, Pakenham tomorrow (Friday 3rd
September) between 10:30AM and
12:00PM. For further information
contact Yvette on 0431 400 744 or email
FROM SEPTEMBER, 5 THINGS
TO REMEMBER:
UV levels are on the rise again so Sep-
tember is the time to grab your sun pro-
tection gear. When UV levels reach 3
and above, sun protection is needed be-
cause the sun can start to damage skin
and eyes and lead to skin cancer.
Use a combination of the following five
sun protection measures.
1. SLIP on clothing that covers as
much skin as possible (no singlet
tops)
2. SLOP on SPF30+ broad spectrum
sun screen and reapply when going
outdoors
3. SLAP on a broad brimmed hat that
shades the head, neck, face and ears
4. SEEK shade
5. SLIDE on some wrap-around sun-
glasses
Be especially careful during the middle
part of the day (between 10:00AM –
2:00PM or 11:00AM – 3:00PM daylight
saving time) when the UV rays are most
intense.
PREP WATER AWARENESS
PROGRAM
Well done to all of our prep swimmers
who enjoyed their final session today.
The prep team report that they have
been very impressed with the behaviour
of our preps – they have displayed
excellent ‗bus manners‘ and have put in
100% effort into their sessions in the
pool. Thanks to all the parents who
assisted on the bus and in the change
rooms.
STUDENT TUTORING
As mentioned in last week‘s newsletter
we are able to provide information
regarding tutoring to support parents
who are seeking additional help for their
child‘s learning. Some tutoring in the past
has been undertaken during school hours
but we now have information regarding
individual sessions for literacy
support which is available after hours. If
you are interested please ring Karen on
03 59443777 for more information.
DEBBIE CUSACK &
TRACEYE RAPINETT
On Tuesday 14th September, the Junior School Council is having a Footy
Colours Day. On the day, you are able to wear your footy team‘s jumper
or colours to school. It can be any footy team from AFL, Rugby or Soccer.
We ask that you bring a gold coin donation. All the money raised will go
towards our sponsor children, Oshdi in Sri Lanka and Pheear in Cambodia.
Oshdi and Pheear live in small, poor communities and the money we raise
helps their community to provide education and school supplies, training in farming skills, medical
check-ups and supplies, building materials for new classrooms and clean, safe drinking water.
So wear your team‘s colours on Tuesday 14th September and help us raise money for our sponsor
children and their communities.

BLOSHC NEWS
Dear Parents,
We are very excited to be completing an
art project in Term 4 with the Year
5/6 students. Along with Julie McLeod
and Jo Zammit, artist Helen Harman will
work with us to construct a large mosaic
mural to adorn the outside of the Senior
School building. The mural will reflect
our school motto ―Learning for Life‖
with a focus on The 5 Keys to Success
from our You Can Do It! Student
wellbeing program which was introduced
this year.
To reduce the cost of our materials we are asking for help in the
following ways:
1. If you have any wall tiles lying around at home that you
are not using could you bring these to the art room please. We
are after mostly coloured tiles. We will need some white and off
white but not too many. Floor tiles are too thick and hard to
break, so WALL tiles only please.
2. If you, or someone you know, works in the tiling indus-
try and could either organize a donation or a discount on the
following products it would be greatly appreciated.
Colourful wall tiles
2 x 20kg bag of tile adhesive (specifically either Davco
Ultrflex or Ardex GLUE)
2 x 20kg bags of dark to mid grey grout (any brand)
5 litre bottle of Davco Grout Additive or Ardex Grout
Booster
Please see the Julie McLeod or Jo Zammit in the art room art if
you can help. We will also be looking for volunteers to help
work on the project, so if you are interested, please let us know.
Thank you for your consideration.
YOU CAN DO IT!

Teach types of thinking that develop organisation:
Discuss with the young person how, before beginning to do something, it is helpful to think of a goal
he/she wants to achieve (grade, skill to learn). Then, after a period of time, it is good to see if the
goal was achieved.
Encourage the young person to think about the various things he/she will need to do to achieve his/
her goal, including managing his/her time, gathering research and overcoming distractions and other
obstacles.
When assigning homework, provide the young person with the criteria for success at different
levels (what he/she needs to demonstrate in his/her work to receive A,B,C,D; above standard,
standard, below standard). Then, have the young person write down the standard he/she is setting
for him/herself (academic target).
Develop with the young person a means for helping him/her monitor progress towards achieving
his/her goals (eg: checklist of tasks accomplished).
Discuss with the young person the difference between promising to do something (―I‘ll do it if I can.‖) and being committed to doing something (―I‘ll do it no matter what.‖). Ask whether promises
or commitments are necessary to ensure he/she achieves his/her goals.
Provide feedback to the young person for having set goals and for being committed to working
towards being successful (doing his/her best).
