The half-day programme of workshops, seminars and performances starts atmiddayandfinishesatabout4.30pm.TheAtleoftheeventcomesfromLeonardBernstein's oW repeated comment: 'Life without music is unthinkable. Musicwithoutlifeisacademic.Thatiswhymycontactwithmusicisatotalembrace.'

LeonardBernstein'ssonAlexander,whoisplanningareturnvisittoChichesterinNovember,hasshotaspecialvideofortheevent,inwhichheobservesthat“Myfather would have been overjoyed with all aspects of it. Masters students asleaders, community involvement, themusic itself, and crucially, educaAon.”Herecallsthathisfatherhadapassionateneedtocommunicate.“Hewasteachingineverythinghedid.Andhewasverygoodat it.Heunderstood that teachingandlearning,likeartitself,isacreaAveact.”

The day begins with a panel discussion addressing the quesAon: ‘MusiceducaAontoday,whatwouldLennysay?’Thenstudents,educators,musiclovers,musicians,anddancerswillcometogethertoexperienceandexploreBernstein’seducaAonal philosophy andmusic in a series ofworkshops and performances.These will include a presentaAon by MA Music Performance students, acommunity choral session, performances by jazz musicians who will 'remix'Bernstein'smusic, a performance of hisVaria%ons on an Octatonic Scale forrecorder and cello, and a collaboraAon between students from the DanceDepartmentandlocalprimaryschoolchildren.TheaWernoonculminateswithashowcase of numbers from the University’s acclaimed Musical Theatre TripleThreat'srecenttouringproducAonOntheTown.
