    Leading Non-Destructive Test Expert Bernie Hertlein Joins GEI

    GEI Central Region Manager Mike Gatzow is pleased to announce that Bernhardt (Bernie) Hertlein has

    joined GEI in our Libertyville, Illinois office. Prior to joining GEI, Bernie served as the head of the Non-Destructive Test (NDT) group at STS and AECOM from 1998 to 2013. He was responsible for NDT andgeophysical measurement technology used for construction quality control, structural integrity, andcondition assessment, and monitoring of remedial and rehabilitation works. He specializes in developingnew applications for NDT methods, designing or building required hardware, and writing appropriatesoftware. He is an active member of several professional societies, currently serving as secretary of ACIcommittee 228 and chairman of committee 336, immediate past-chairman of ASTM C9-64, a director ofthe ADSC-IAFD, and a trustee of the Deep Foundations Institute. He is also past chairman of the DFITest and Evaluation committee. Bernie received the following degrees: BS, Civil Engineering, CentreExperimental de Recherche et d'Etudes du Batiment et des Travaux Publics, France, 1990, H.N.D.,Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Farnborough Technical College England, 1970Bernie was elected as a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute in 2012 and earned the Outstanding

    Service Award for 2009, Association of Drilled Shaft Contractors/The International Association ofFoundation Drilling (ADSC-IAFD) for significant contributions to the deep foundations industry. He haswritten and/or contributed to more than 40 presentations and publications on NDT of concrete structuresand foundations, including the book Nondestructive Testing of Deep Foundations, for which he wasprincipal author, co-written with Allen G. Davis. He has served as contributing editor for ACI-228.2RNondestructive Test Methods for Evaluation of Concrete in Structures, ASCE Chimney and StackInspection Guidelines, ADSC/DFI Nondestructive Testing Manual and most recently ASTM C1740,Standard Practice for Evaluating the Condition of Concrete Plates Using the Impulse ResponseMethod. He has presented more than 50 short courses and invited lectures on NDT of concretestructures and foundations for Departments of Transportation, universities, construction industryprofessionals and building owners groups.
