2018 BMDCNV Elections

Nominating Slate

Name: Jean MichaelDate: 12/20/2017 Q: How long have you been a member of the BMDCNV? A: 20+ years

Q: Are you a member of the BMDCA? A: Yes

Q: If elected, will you attend a majority of the scheduled board meetings? A: Yes

Q: What do you feel are the immediate concerns of the BMDCNV?

A: Education is always one of the main concerns – educating potential puppy owners about the breed and differences between responsible breeders vs backyard or puppy mill breeders. Also to help those who have already purchased a puppy from any breeder about the care and responsibilities of owning a Bernese Mountain Dog. I think we do a great job with this in our PPO discussions at the Spring and Fall Fun Day events.

Q: What do you feel should be the long term goals of the BMDCNV?

A: To offer activities that are of interest to all of the membership, encourage participation – we have so many members and it would be great if we could pull them into more activities that encourage teamwork between dogs and their owners. Couch potatoes are great of course, but our dogs can do so much more! Continue to find ways of improving upon the health of the breed and keeping within the breed standard.

In accordance with Article IV section 3 of the By-Laws of the BMDCNV, the Nominating Committee (Alise Burbridge, Anya Wittenborg, and Elizabeth Malcolmson) have identified the following nominees for open positions for the BMDCNV Board 2018 - 2020 terms.

President: Jean Michael

Treasurer: Bruce Hallden (incumbent)

Director: Patricia Buickerood (incumbent)

Director: Steve Diers (incumbent)

Thank you to Alise, Anya and Elizabeth for doing such an important job so well.

Additional nominations of eligible members in good standing may be made by another member in good standing. A written petition must be submitted to the Secretary at least 8 weeks prior to the Annual Meeting. Each petition must be accompanied by the written acceptance of the nominee signifying his/her willingness to be a candidate and, if elected, to attend all Board Meetings and Annual Meetings during the term.

Any petition must be submitted to the [email protected] by January 22, 2018.

BMDCNV Board CandidateQ U E S T I O N N A I R E S

Please outline your qualifications for the position you are seeking: I have been a member of BMDCNV for a number of years and have attended, chaired, stewarded, and assisted with a wide variety of club events. I have also served as Director for several years. There are a lot of duties and responsibilities that go along with the job of President and I am honored to be nominated for the position. I know that the members of our Board are great, knowledgeable people and I look forward to working with them and learning from the best! I look forward to filling the shoes of our outgoing President, Marge Bumen, and know that she will be very instrumental in the transition a great mentor for me!

from the President...from the President...Welcome to 2018

Here we are at the start of a new calendar year, but many months lie ahead until the end of our official BMDCNV year ends. Our Club year ends and starts at our Annual Meeting on- April 29th.2018, so, if your 2017 resolutions were for more training, attending classes, more volunteering, spending time with your dog(s), more grooming, go to a dog show, improve your dog’s diet, loose Berner weight, or call your breeder & send a picture to them….you still have Berner calendar time! How great is that!

Most of us have been blessed with a great snowfall and our Berners have really come alive! Snow on top of the leaf piles make a great play mountain. A friend, Peggy DePasquale, who now lives and teaches in Wyoming and spends much time with Torii her 3 yr old Berner hiking in the Teton Mountains, controls ice balls in the pads by keeping the paw hair long and applying Vaseline. Longer nails for the winter help with traction. Our Winter Walk event is planned for Feb 18th in Ashford Connecticut.

Our Holiday Party with Santa and Berners is the BEST!!! Thanks to the Chair Marguerite Massey, and the Holiday Helpers, Carolyn Massey, Linda & Nancy Bates. We have over 100 members and their Berners decked out in their finest Holiday attire…A must for your 2018 New Year’s resolution list.

Coming up the first weekend in March is a very Special Dog Show- Our BMDCNV Regional Specialty @ the Ct Working Group Dog Show in West Springfield. Many, many Berners of all ages and many working dogs make it a great show to attend. Information regarding events can be found online on our Web-page and in the Blatt.Up to date information on our Facebook & Instagram.

Much of our Club’s time this first quarter will be preparing for the Biggest Bernese Mt Dog Show in the world. Nashoba will play host for the 4th time to the Nations and Worlds gathering of Bernese Mt Dogs. Club members have been preparing for the event for the last 3 years and all will kick-off on April 29th with a week of exhibitions, educational seminars, performance competitions, exhibits, the top 20 BMD’s all culminating in the presentation of the Bernese Mountain Dogs that best represent the Official BMD standards.

Which brings me to two discussion points: Breeders and Rescue. Where would our breed be without the devoted breeders who spend their lives thinking about the welfare of the breed and producing the healthiest, strongest, best temperament litters possible. Pages and pages of happy veteran Berner faces and stories in the December Blatt attest to the wonderful job that our serious breeders are doing. And Rescue…thank you to those members who give so much time to the Berner in need. Dreadful stories of neglected Berners in need have a happy ending because of the work of our Berner Inc. group…thank you to all…and thank you to all the members for making our club viable and productive.

Wishing you and your Berners all the best… Marge Bumen, BMDCNV President

Holiday PartyBMDCNV

The 3rd Annual BMDCNV Holiday Party was held on Sunday, December 17th, 2017 at the Boxboro Regency Hotel in Boxboro, MA. We had another fabulous party this year and welcomed over 100 guests and almost 50 dogs including many non-Berner fur friends as well! Our members got into the Holiday spirit by showcasing their Best Holiday sweaters! Congratulations to Mick Beck & Jane Boas for the winning the human Holiday Sweater competition and to Moose (Allison Bailey/Ray Harding) & Trinity (Nancy/Linda Bates) for the best dressed pups! Deb Metcalf & Adam Conn did a sensational job showcasing and judging this competition! There were many honorable mentions and participants all went home with a 2018 Nashoba calendar. We had an outstanding craft selection which raised $543 and a

fantastic selection of raffle items which raised an additional $570 funds for Nashoba. One lucky winner went home with the light up Berner which was a stand alone raffle item that brought in $105. Great job Nancy & Linda Bates with the craft and raffle tables! Once again we had over four tables of fabulous cookies that were baked for our Cookie Exchange. And lastly, we had a wonderful visit from Santa who took professional pictures with guests with a gorgeous backdrop and setup provided by SeaJay photography. Thank you to our guests who sent in their professional photos and photos of the event! Thank you again for the dedication and hard work of the many who outdid themselves to make the gathering such a special event.

Getting Started In Junior Showmanship The American Kennel Club licenses dogs shows (competitive exhibitions in which dogs are judged in accordance with an established standard of perfection for each breed) that test and evaluate the form and function of purebred dogs. In addition, at some shows the AKC offers classes which evaluate the abilities of the participant on the other end of the lead, the young handler.

AKC Junior Showmanship classes offer youngsters the opportunity to:

• Develop their handling skills• Learn about good sportsmanship• Learn about dogs and dog shows.

JOIN THE WORLD OF AKC JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP!Juniors are important to the future of the sport of dogs and responsible dog ownership, and the more they learn, the more valuable they become. The values, attitudes and responsibility learned through Junior Showmanship will serve youngsters well throughout their lives. By putting time and effort into learning about their dog and how to present it, juniors are rewarded with a win.

WHO MAY PARTICIPATEJunior Showmanship classes are open to children from 9 to 18 years old and are divided into Novice and Open classes: All participants in Junior Showmanship classes must have an AKC Junior Showmanship Handler Number. Novice classes are for those children who, at the time entries close, have not won three (3) first-place awards in a Novice class at a licensed or member show. To qualify as a win, more than one child must be in competition in a class. The Novice class gives those children who are beginners a chance to gain experience and confidence apart from the more seasoned youngsters. Open classes are for those children having three or more first-place wins; these are the more experienced Junior Handlers. A beginner can learn how to present their dog more effectively by watching these talented youngsters in the ring.

The classes may further be divided into:

• Junior: At least 9 years old but under 12 years old on the day of the show.• Intermediate: At least 12 years old but under 15 years old on the day of the show.• Senior: At least 15 years old but under 18 years old on the day of the show.

JUDGING CRITERIAJuniors are judged on their ability to present, or handle, their dogs within the same formats and guidelines as those who compete in the breed ring. The quality of their presentation, not the dog, is judged. Juniors are encouraged to develop their handling abilities, dress appropriately, conduct themselves in a proper manner, and present their dog in a well-groomed condition.

WHAT ABOUT THE DOG?Any dog entered must be eligible to compete in dog shows or obedience trials. The dog must be owned by the child, a member of the child’s family or member of his household. Many times junior showmanship classes are free (if the dog is entered in regular classes) or are offered at the reduced rate.

HOW TO GET STARTEDThe best way for prospective junior handlers to see what is involved in junior handling is to watch the Junior Showmanship classes at a dog show. They will see how children take part at all levels of competition, how they have developed friendships and have learned to compete and accept their wins and losses in a gracious manner. Talk to these young participants in our sport. You will be impressed by their knowledge, attitudes and their willingness to share their experiences with someone new to the sport. Another way to learn the basics is at your local dog club. Many clubs offer weekly handling classes. These informal sessions are conducted in a relaxed atmosphere and afford both dog and handler an opportunity to practice in a setting similar to an actual show.

Junior Handler Spotlight

Danielle Meyers My family fell in love with the breed when we first got our first companion Berner, Miley. Due to Miley’s loving personality and disposition, we sought to get another Berner. This resulted in our fist show Berner, Zack. The very first show we attended was the 2009 Nationals in Oregon with our 6 month old Berner. My twin sister, Rachel showed in junior showmanship in a very large class and placed first. After that we were hooked. Over the next several years, I mastered my handling skills by working for handlers, attending conformation classes, and competing in junior showmanship. By the end of 2016, and my junior career, I was ranked the number one working dog handler in the country. In addition, I have on multiple occasions been a finalist at Eukanuba and placed third overall out of 168 juniors competing. Also, I have been a finalist at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Furthermore, I have won best junior at the Great Club of Philadelphia and received a scholarship. In addition to showing in juniors, I also compete in the breed ring with my own dogs. I finished my first bred by with limited showing with all majors! Luckily, I was given the opportunity to special a Berner named Riley, and we won multiple specials and we won multiple specialties and group placements. My experience with Berners and the sport of dog showing has increased my confidence in myself and has been such a positive influence. The best part is that it keeps my family and friends together!

Volunteers are greatly appreciated so if anyone would like to help organize, or can

bring an item for the snack table - please let Carol know.

If there is a cancellation due to weather, a message will be posted on the BMDCNV member's e-group list and Facebook

Reminders: Places to take your dog off-leash are dwindling and we must do our part to control our dogs in the presence of other park patrons. Please bring baggies to pick up after your dog. Please maintain control while meeting others by leashing or sim-ply holding our dogs. Use your judgment on how dog friendly other patrons are and

show them respect. Also we have secured the Park for the entire day so anyone inter-ested is welcome to take another walk on their own afterward if they would like!
