BERMUDA

Bermuda (officially, The Bermuda Islands or The Somers Isles) is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic Ocean.

It is the oldest and most populous remaining British overseas territory, settled by England a century before the Acts of Union that created the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Bermuda has a thriving economy, with a large financial sector and tourism industry giving it the world's highest GDP per capita in 2005. It has a sub-tropical climate, pink beaches, and cerulean blue oceans.

CULTURE OF BERMUDA

English is the main official language in the Bermudian territory.

Among the other popular languages of Bermuda, Portuguese is worth mentioning.

The natives of Bermuda are accommodative and friendly.

Bermuda architecture is an essential part of Bermudian Culture.

TRADITION

The Bermudian traditions include Gombey dance, which is one of the most popular dance forms of the Somer islands of Bermuda.

Traditions of Bermuda also entail the annual exhibition on agriculture. Bermuda Botanical gardens in Paget parish played host to this very popular three day event held in April every year.

The main highlights of this exhibition are: Horses Cattle along with pigs Goats Food stuffs Vegetables

CUISINE OF BERMUDA

Fruits and Vegetables Peas and Plenty: Black-eyed peas cooked with

onions, salt pork and sometimes rice. Hoppin' John: Peas and rice and Pawpaw Casserole

is consumed with meat dish or poultry. Treats of Bermuda: Dishes prepared with guavas

like Bermuda syllabub.

Seafood Bermuda fish chowder: Prepared with rock fish and is

consumed with sherry and rum along. Hash: Once a favorite platter of Bermuda Cuisine, it is made with

shark. Wahoo streak: A recipe of sweet fish wahoo is a delicious menu. Bermuda lobster: Dishes prepared with it are very famous

among the locals and is accompanied with high price tag. Mussel pie: A recipe of steamed mussel in papaya, bacon,

potatoes, onion, lemon, thyme and curry powder.

1. KINGS WHARF

Located on the north-west tip of Bermuda. The port is also commonly called Royal Naval Dockyard, (or just ‘Dockyard’) as it served as the base for the British Royal Navy from 1814 through to 1951. Cruise ships dock at the King’s Wharf Cruise Ship Terminal, or at the adjacent Heritage Wharf Cruise Ship Terminal.

BERMUDA MARITIME MUSEUM

Spread over the Commissioner’s House, the Ordnance House and the Shifting House. The Bermuda Maritime Museum is packed with fascinating exhibits detailing the maritime history of Bermuda. See treasures from 17th century wrecks, ancient diving equipment, early navigation instruments, original sea charts and lots more. The museum is situated in Royal Naval Dockyard.

SNORKEL PARK BEACH

Dockyard is Snorkel Park Beach, a very convenient beach venue. The novice snorkeler can take a free lesson, or the more experienced can follow the well marked snorkel trails. Kayaks, paddle boats, umbrellas, and lounge chairs are all available for hire. Behind the beach you’ll find a restaurant/grill/bar, bathrooms and changing rooms.

CRAFT MARKET

Bought at the Craft Market, which is housed in the Old Cooperage, at the center of Dockyard. You can browse many stalls selling goods like wooden bowls, wool hats, jewelry and painted china. A short walk away from the craft market lie the popular rum cake factory and glass blowing workshop.

SOMERSET LONG BAY

Gorgeous quarter-mile stretch of golden sand, fronting calm shallow waters, perfect for paddling and swimming. Behind the beach is Somerset Long Bay park, an undeveloped green area, ideal for a gentle stroll. Somerset Long Bay is about 3 miles south-west of Dockyard, a short cab ride

OTHER FUN THINGS TO DO

Take a fascinating cruise on one of Bermuda's glass-bottom boats and view Bermuda's rainbow-colored undersea world of fish and coral formations.

Browse the shops and museums of the Royal Naval Dockyard. Troll for blue marlin and other big game fish on a deep-sea fishing

adventure. Catch a round of golf at one of the many courses on this beautiful

island. Bermudian products are available at great prices. These products,

exclusive to Bermuda, include cedar-wood gifts, commemorative coins, miniature ceramic cottages, handbags with cedar and mahogany handles, hand-crafted gold jewelry, polished shark's teeth mounted in 14-karat gold and the famous Bermuda shorts.

The Bermuda dollar (BMD) is the official currency. It is on par with the U.S. dollar. U.S. dollars, traveler's checks and credit cards are widely accepted.

2. ST. GEORGE’S PORT

A storybook town that was once Bermuda's capital, St. George's is also famous as the second English settlement in the New World, after Jamestown. A World Heritage Site, it's a maze of quaint narrow streets.

3. HAMILTON CITY PORT

Bermuda’s capital city because of its central location on the island, which the Colonists believed offered more room to expand. It's also the place that attracts the most visitors because it has plenty of sightseeing attractions -- including Bermuda's newest, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. Most attractions are easy to see on foot. As you stroll through this beautiful port town, you'll love the charming pastel-colored two-story buildings along Front Street.
