Mission Statement

Dear Berkwood Hedge Community,

Each year our parents, our board mem-bers, and our staff come together to sup-port our learning community with gifts of time, talents, and treasures – in the library, admissions, committees, classrooms, the Spring Celebration, the Teach-In, sign-ups, and so much more.

Our school continues to be financially stable and has benefitted from two years of 100% current families, staff, and board participation in our Annual Fund cam-paign. We also appreciate the generous donations from our alumni, grandparents and friends. Our 100% participation, combined with the generosity of friends and family, speaks to our community’s deep commitment to our school. The 2013 - 2014 Annual Fund raised almost $93,000, the highest amount raised in the history of the school thus far!

Our Spring Celebration and Auction party at the David Bower Center raised almost $14,000! We are humbled and thankful for this level of support toward the long-term financial health and stability of our school. Your support pro-vides the inspiration for our teachers and staff to create extraordinary learning experiences for our children.

Every day our children engage in dynamic and relevant curriculum and enrich our community with an unwavering enthusiasm for learning. Our children continue to inspire us with their courage, empathy, creativity, and intellec-tual curiosity – from writing and publishing personal memoirs in the upper grades to a year-long thematic study of change in the EARTH class to researching and presenting bird facts for the science fair in the SPIRIT class to the Full Belly Farm trip in the AIR class.

We honor our community and our dedicated and talented teachers who guide, nurture, create, and celebrate our children each day.

Thank you!

Message from our Finance Committee

The school’s financial results for the 2013-14 school year were good. The school budgets conservatively and had projected a moderate deficit. A combination of better than expect-ed fundraising and careful review of expenses across a number of categories resulted in a break-even year, before accounting for site improvements. (About a $2,000 operating deficit on overall income/expenses of $1.74 million, or 0.1%). Including capital expenses (site improvements, acquiring technology and other equipment that is used over a period of years), the school had a net deficit of approx-imately $35,000 before depreciation, and so used only a small amount of the school’s financial reserves. Unlike most independent schools, Berkwood Hedge owns its site free and clear, and has no debt. We want to continue to ensure that we have the resources to continue and improve our strong program. We appreciate the Berkwood Hedge community’s commitment to sustaining the school. We thank you for giving generously to the Annual Fund.

Letter from our Head of School and the President of the Board
