Program InformationCheck-In: Monday, July 20

All students must arrive at Santa Monica High School during check-in.

Date: Monday, July 20

Time: 9:00 a.m.

Location: Santa Monica High School, Barnum Hall lobby

What to Bring• Comfortable clothing is important. Temperatures in Los Angeles in July are

typically in the high 80s (F), but classrooms will be air-conditioned. No special performance clothing is needed.

• Vocalists do not need to bring their own microphones. They will be provided.• Guitarists and bassists should bring their instrument, tuner, patch cable, and

accessories (i.e., extra strings, picks, etc).• Pianists and keyboard players may choose to bring their own small keyboard for

practicing, but pianos and keyboards will be provided during all program classes. • Horn and string players should bring their instrument. Be sure to bring any

additional accessories needed for instrument maintenance.• Drum set players should bring their own stick bag, practice pad, cymbals, and hi-

hat clutch. Standard drum sets will be available for use during the program. • Percussion players should bring their bells, sticks, and cymbals if they want to use

them, and any other accessories that they might use. • Songwriters and composers should prepare lead sheets, charts, and lyrics. A key

component of this program is students sharing their work with the group as part of the master class experience, interacting with fellow program participants, and getting feedback from the instructors. Students are therefore encouraged to bring charts or lead sheets, lyrics, and/or recordings of their songs (via CD, iPod, or another accessible format). If a song’s lyrics are not in English, an English translation will be needed. Please refer to the lead sheet instructions on page 4 for further information.

What’s in the classrooms?

A full band setup will be provided for use in the classrooms. If students see a need to bring other equipment for use outside of the classroom, they are welcome to do so, though it is not necessary.

Lead Sheet Instructions

For more detailed feedback on their composition(s), students might consider creating a lead sheet. Be sure to include the following key elements:

1. A lead sheet can be written on staff paper by hand or notated in a music program such as Finale.

2. The melody is written out on the staff. If students are unable to prepare the melody, notating the chords to the song is helpful.

3. Chords go above the staff. Place them on the beat where they occur. Lyrics, if applicable, go under the staff.

4. Each section of a song (verse, chorus, bridge) needs only be notated once. Additional lyrics can be written on an attached sheet. If students are unsure of the format of their song, assistance will be available upon arrival at the program.

Final Concerts/Major Events

The program will culminate in the opportunity for participants to perform one original song that they have worked on over the course of the week. Family and friends are encouraged to attend this performance. Additional details will be provided in advance of the event.

Departure: Friday, July 24

The program will conclude at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24.
