BHSDG FINANCIAL REPORT 2014–2015

THE BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL Development Group (BHSDG) received and processed over $518,000 in donations and other revenues during the 2014–2015 school year. Approximately 61% of this revenue (or $321,000) was directed to or earned by BHSDG to be distributed by our Board. From these unrestricted revenues, BHSDG provided funding for academic, athletic, artistic and club programs at Berkeley High School (BHS). Ongoing BHSDG funded programs include:

After-School Tutorial Program free for all BHS students ($45,000)

Classroom Supplies grants as well as funding for the registrar, library, counseling and career centers, principal’s office, and every BHS teacher ($37,000)

First Step Scholarships ($43,000)

College and Career Support includes funding College Handbook, Book of College Essays, College Fair, college application and test fees ($24,000)

Student Organizer ($16,000)

OTHER BHSDG GRANTS:

Field Trips ($5,000)

Teacher professional development and guest speakers ($9,000)

Technology/Equipment ($13,000)

Additional student support, classroom materials, classroom enrichment (dance, art, etc.) support ($14,000)

Initial funding for Sexual Harassment Training and Drug and Alcohol education ($10,000) starting in Spring 2015 and continuing into the 2015–2016 school year.

BHSDG received approximately $197,000 in donations and other revenue earmarked for specific learning communities, programs and departments. BHSDG acts as fiscal agent for these funds, at no cost, providing a significant benefit to BHS small learning communities (SLC’s) and programs. BHS SLC’s and programs determine how they will spend those monies, and they were used for a wide range of educational enrichment opportunities.

The BHSDG’s fundraising and administrative expenses accounted for 6% ($32,000) of the overall BHSDG budget. We carried forward $25,000 reserve for future needs and anticipate funding our sponsored programs on an ongoing basis.

BRIDGE TO ACHIEVEMENT100% GRADUATION RATE, high levels of college attendance, improved test scores. These are the metrics by which academic success is judged, and the Berkeley High Bridge Program has achieved these outcomes and more.

The Bridge Program supports academic success by preparing eighth graders at Berkeley middle schools for their freshman year and supporting them during their four years at Berkeley High and beyond.

Bridge participants are primarily students of color without a family history of college attendance. When compared with students from similar backgrounds, Bridge participants have higher GPA’s, higher attendance rates, higher high school exit exam scores, and higher numbers enrolling in advanced coursework than non-participating Berkeley High students.

Bridge recruits 25–30 new eighth graders each year, kicking off with an intensive two week summer program that transitions to a daily Berkeley High afterschool activity during which students work with tutors, mentors and Bridge staff. The program continues throughout the student’s high school career, including a leadership retreat for juniors and the seniors’ 6 week SAT preparation class. A dedicated Bridge teacher coaches each cohort, checking homework; providing motivation, academic monitoring and support; and keeping in touch with parents. College students serve as Bridge Mentors, providing coaching and role modeling for Bridge students. After graduation, Bridge continues to assist students by offering long-distance support during college.

Funding for Bridge comes from a variety of sources, including the Berkeley High Development Group. According to Bridge coordinator Jessie Luxford, “The Bridge Program would not be what it is today without the help of the Berkeley High Development Group; BHSDG funding has helped grow the program. I cannot say enough about how much it has meant to us.”

Now in its sixth year, Bridge serves 150 students, and demand for the program outpaces capacity. Ms. Luxford hopes that “with continued support from partners like the Berkeley High Development Group, the program will expand to meet the growing demand.”
