Bergquist Bugle Grove Avenue School, CUSD 220 Fifth Grade Issue #5 October, 11, 2016 Students handle a snake at Timber-lee camp. A Note from Mr.B: I hope I am able to communicate with everyone at conferences how special I feel this class is. I am privileged to work with a group of very hardworking students that are thirsty for new experiences and learning. It is a pleasure working with this group of students! Conferences: Meeting with parents during conferences is always such an important experience. I look forward to the opportunity for you to share your thoughts, questions, and concerns with me. In conferences and beyond, please keep me up to date on how you feel your child is doing. If your child is struggling with anything that we are learning or is experiencing any problems (even issues outside of schoolwork), please let me know. I strongly believe that students benefit from knowing that their parents and teachers are connected through consistent communication. Please be sure you have signed up for conferences! There are still 14 slots left on Thursday, and we have 14 families that still need to sign up! The link follows: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b4cafad2aa5fe3- 201618 Also, please find attached a questionnaire to return to me by Monday. These questions help me to prepare to answer your questions at conference. Don’t forget that your student has a stake in their education and is invited to join us as well! Please let me know if you wish to not have your child present. Quote of the Week: Believe in yourself and there will come a day when others will have no choice but to believe with you. ~Cynthia Kersey Timber-lee: What a wonderful experience for students and adults alike! We were given opportunities to better get to know each other, expand our horizons, work cooperatively, and have a great time! In reflecting on the experience, the Grove staff members were amazed at the positive attitude, supportive nature, and willingness to try new things demonstrated by the students. TIMBERLEE PICTURES: We have assembled pictures from all the tribes that are available for your viewing through a link on my website! Check out these pictures for yourselves! You won’t want to miss them! Maker Club: At lunch on Monday, students will have an opportunity to find out more about our upcoming weekly Maker Club! In this club, we will be building, designing and taking apart things. We have determined that Thursday mornings at 8:00 is the best day to schedule this! It is open to all 5 th grade students! If you like to build things, this cannot be missed! A Quick Look at Curriculum: Writing: Students are embarking in a second narrative writing. This is a realistic fiction piece based on our own life experiences. We are looking at our stories through the lens of a story mountain, discussing the rising action, climax and falling action as well as focusing on conflict and resolution. Reading: Soon, we will embark on second book club which focuses on historical fiction that takes place around the Civil War. This compliments our work in Social Studies. Read Aloud: Our class is currently participating in a shared reading of Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. This historical fiction novel is providing a basis for practicing the strategies that we are studying in readers’ workshop and to share our thinking as we read. (OVER)
