e x e c u t i V e d i r e c t o rdear armory Friends and Family, can you possibly imagine a life without art? Without it, how would we have documented history, shaped centuries of culture, or even managed our own personal lives? at the armory art center we engage artists from novice through professional to work side-by-side, making a difference in our lives and the lives of those around us.

as we embark on the armory’s 29th year, we are thrilled at the renewed energy of our staff and volunteers as we begin a new season. We are adding new classes, instructors, and programming while maintaining the existing high-level faculty. Watch for additional single-class, taster course Pop-Up Workshops and classes shortened to four weeks instead of the usual eight for those on a tighter schedule.

additionally, join us this year for a range of other stimulating artistic experiences such as exhibitions, lectures, and special party art events. take time to review the first catalog of the academic year and please note both session i and session ii are now combined in the same catalog.

come be a part of the armory art center. create, engage, and let your imagination take you to new places!

For over 30 years NYC painter Charles Parness has been doing self-portraits exclusively, long before smartphones and the popularity of the selfie. On the surface his self portraits

appear to be in the tradition of Rembrandt that runs through many of the classic oeuvres, but on closer inspection they

have a decidedly post-modern feel.

Working with metal clays gives the freedom and beauty of precious jewelry or sculpture, without the cost or mechanical inhibitions of some of the more traditional metal-smithing practices. The course is decidedly student-led, with attending artists deciding the specific skills to be incorporated each week. This term we’re focusing on mixed metals; techniques include firing around fittings, metal inlay, and incorporating wire.

Cindy Bartosek thought long and hard about what she wanted to do after retirement from a career in public health. “On my bucket list was teaching at the Armory,” she said. “I spent 30 years nourishing people’s bodies and now I want to nourish their soul.” Cindy transitioned from being a successful photographer to becoming a fiber artist after she studied with Leora Stewart at the Armory. Cindy found new passion in the tactile, meditative crafts of tapestry and weaving. Fiber arts have threaded through Cindy’s life—from her grandmothers quilting bees to teaching sewing and cooking as a child in 4-H. “There is a social aspect to the tradition of fiber arts. I’ve made fabulous friends through the classes at the Armory.”

Although Cindy has traveled for art workshops internationally, she feels the Armory is a very special place. “There is an am-biance, a vibe. You can almost feel the creative energy in the campus. Other places I’ve been haven’t had the same feel.” Cindy is a generous donor to the Armory as well saying,“I feel fortunate I am able to support places that mean something to me personally, but also have positive impact on the community.”

S C H O O L P O L I C I E SThe Armory Art Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The following policies and measures are in place so we can continue to pursue our mission to inspire the creation and experience of art. Tuition fees cover only about half of the art school’s operating costs. The remainder of our budget is raised through grants, fundraisers, and donations, thereby subsidizing student tuition. When registering for any class at the Armory Art Center, students acknowledge the understanding of and agree to the policies listed below.

L IABILITYThe Armory will not assume liability for injuries that occur within the subject area where the student is enrolled. Upon registration for any course, the student assumes all reasonable liability from injuries related to the scope of the coursework being taught and releases the Armory Art Center from any liability claims related to any inju-ries and/or accidents that may occur. The student can be assured that every reasonable safety precaution is taken by the center. The Armory Art Center is not responsible for any artwork or personal items lost or stolen in the classrooms or lockers.

MEMBERSHIP Members are entitled to take an unlimited number of classes at the Armory and membership, renewed annually, is required of all students. The more classes you take, the greater the value of your membership, considering only about half of the cost to run the art school comes from tuition and lab fees with the remainder of our budget needs coming in from contributions, grants, and fundraising events.

REFUNDSA non-refundable registration fee equal to 10% of the course tuition is included in each course registration, excluding one day workshops and Pop-up Workshops. Students who withdraw from a course at least five (5) working days prior to the start of that course are eligible to receive a full tuition refund minus the registration fee. Students who withdraw from their course less than five (5) working days before the start of that course or once the course has started are not eligible for a refund. No refunds will be issued due to a student’s failure to attend class.

CANCELED OR MISSED COURSESThere are no make-up classes due to student illness, travel, or other reasons that are not the responsibility of the Armory Art Center. Students enrolled in courses which are canceled by the Armory due to lack of enrollment or instructor illness will receive a full refund. Every effort will be made to notify students at least 24 hours before the first class. The Armory reserves the right to substitute instruc-tors for any of its classes at any time.

chanGes to transfers & ProratinG Policy In order to maintain the quality of instruction the transfer and proration policies have been changed. Students wishing to transfer from one course to another in the same session may do so prior to the second meeting of the course and only if space is available in class. If you do not attend a class, the Armory must still pay the teacher; therefore, classes paid for but not attended are not eligible for transfer or refund. Purchasing less than the full number of classes of a course is an option on a limited basis, but may not be less than 4 classes during one session. Other restrictions may apply.
