FROM THE PRESIDENT

FROM THE DIRECTOR

ONE withCOURAGEOne with Courage is an initiative centered around the courage it takes to talk about child sexual abuse and the unique role children’s advocacy centers, like The Bridge, play in providing comprehensive, coordinated and compassionate services to child victims of abuse.

Courage can be defined as the choice and willingness to confront agony, pain, danger, uncertainty or intimidation. If you are familiar with The Bridge and our Mission, I think you can see what we do, every day, in those words.

From the children that muster the courage to make an outcry and tell someone about their personal pain and agony; to our skilled forensic interviewers that drive to work every day, knowing they are going to confront some of the worst things done to children imaginable. Or family members that realize they have some difficult days ahead, but find the courage to build a new life, not only for a child, but for themselves as well. These people exemplify courage and are the reason we do what we do.

I have the privilege to serve in an environment where courage is an everyday occurrence. To all of you that also serve, contribute and/or advocate for The Bridge - THANK YOU. Together we have the courage to change our world.

The Wizard of Oz….a timeless classic. Everyone can remember the characters and what it is they long for: Dorothy wants only to go home, the Scarecrow wants a brain, the Tin Man wants a heart, and the Lion…..well, the Lion wants courage. We have all had moments in our lives when we desired courage. The Great and Powerful Oz has great wisdom for the Cowardly Lion, “All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty.”

One With Courage is a national initiative which highlights the courage it takes not only for children to TELL but also for adults to ENGAGE in a conversation with their children and others about what is often considered a taboo subject.

To talk about abuse takes courage. This year’s annual report is dedicated to reminding us about what it means to have courage. As the Wizard of Oz tells us, courage does not mean a lack of fear, in fact, fear and courage go hand in hand. Now, that’s the grown up definition. Our hope is that you will read through these pages to find out how YOU have made a difference. You will also find how children who walked through our doors define courage. It might surprise you how easy it is to be courageous in the eyes of a child.

Our staff and board appreciate all you do to make it possible for us to fulfill our mission of “providing a child’s path to healing and justice”. We also challenge you to continue to BE ONE with Courage through giving of your time and resources, as well as by engaging in conversations with your children, family members and anyone in your circle of influence.

Children’s Advocacy Centers were designed to improve the response and investigation of child abuse cases. To accomplish this purpose, The Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center works diligently to: • Reduce the anxiety of child abuse victims and families created by traditional child abuse investigation and prosecution procedures • Facilitate a collaborative investigation • Educate the community on the Recognition, Response and Reporting of child abuse • Seek justice and provide the tools for children and families to heal.

The Bridge works in collaboration with 72 partner agencies made up of: • Law Enforcement • Child Protective Services • Mental and Medical Health Practitioners • Prosecutors

These partners come together to help child victims of abuse residing in the Texas Panhandle. Children come through the center to be given a voice, and to receive services that provide help, healing and justice.

Community Education and PreventionThe Bridge provides interactive and informative seminars to the public, free of charge. The target audience for community education programs is high school students and adults. These programs emphasize the recognition, reporting and response to child abuse.

Victim AssistanceThroughout the investigative process, child victims and their non-offending family members receive crisis intervention support, assistance in completing the Crime Victim’s Compensation application, information about victim’s rights, and referrals for counseling and community services.

CounselingThe Bridge contracts with counselors and can pay for sessions to best meet the therapeutic and payment needs for the family.

SERVICES WE PROVIDE

Child Interviews and Case CollaborationThe Bridge conducts digitally recorded forensic (fact finding) interviews of children, ages 2-17, who have been victims of child abuse or sexual assault, witnessed a violent or drug-related crime, or fallen prey to internet crime.

The interview is the first step for a child to tell what happened in a safe, non-threatening environment, alleviating the need for the child to disclose their abuse over and over again.

The Bridge works with 72 partner agencies to establish a collaborative investigation process that ensures the needs of the victim are met and cases are not lost or forgotten.

Safety Education Safety Education programs are offered, free of charge to school age children. These programs are designed to teach and reinforce the three R’s of personal safety: • Recognize • Resist • Report

HOT BLOODED AND COLD AS ICE RUNSGet Fit owner, Karen Roberts, has a goal of helping our community to “Get Fit and Live Well” and that is exactly what her team does by hosting the annual Hot Blooded and Cold as Ice runs benefitting The Bridge. The runs are held the last Saturday of January and July.

KNOW your child’s friends and their families, caregivers, youth group leaders, teachers or any person spending time alone with your children.

TEACH your child names for their private parts, and that they have the right to say NO. Never make your child submit to physical contact if they do not want to.

LISTEN when your child tells you that he or she does not want to be with or go with someone else.

MAKE a list of people your child can tell or talk to if someone has touched them. Understand that your child may not tell you or has been told not to tell you.

BELIEVE your child if they say they have been abused. Encourage them to ask questions if they are confused or not sure if another’s behavior is acceptable.

REPORTING ABUSE

EVERYONE MUST REPORT CHILD ABUSE: Intervention has to take place to protect children, to get them to a place of healing and to restore their childhood.

THE LAW: Texas Family Code (261.101) states that a person having cause to believe that a child’s physical or mental health or welfare has been or may be adversely affected by the abuse or neglect must report immediately.

Failure to report is punishable by imprisonment for up to 180 days and/or a fine up to $2,000.

In February 2016, The Bridge proudly hosted the fourth annual Heroes and Legends event. Headlining the event was Football legend, Archie Manning, known for his time at the University of Mississippi and as a New Orleans Saint. Emcee for the event was one of the most recognizable voices in baseball, Chuck Morgan of the Texas Rangers. In addition to the sports legends, the hero of the event was Meagan Brown, a client of The Bridge when she was seventeen years old. She shared how The Bridge helped in her journey to recovery.
