Product Framework

Bentley Geospatial Desktop

Bentley Geospatial Industry Applications

Bentley Geospatial Server

Bentley Map embraces XFM

• XFM environment completely supported− Database attributes

− Legacy project conversion»Project, NOT data!

− Query tools

− Support for all geospatial tools

• An extensible environment for development

Page 4: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

Bentley Map

• Map Manager− Easy to use interface for accessing geospatial

data• Interoperability

− Import, export, reference SHP, MapInfo, Oracle Spatial

• Coordinate System Tools− Define coordinate systems for maps, OTF

projections etc.• Geospatial Administrator

− Define and manage geospatial XFM projects

Page 5: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

Bentley Map• Thematic Mapping

− Full time, no need to recreate objects• Analysis (Buffering, Overlay)

− Layer based, works on layer, not what’s in the view

− Builds topology automatically, no separate process

• Print Preparation− Quickly create drawing sheets using your own

borders− Supports title block information

What is XFM?

• eXtreme Facility Modeling?• eXtensible Feature Model?• XML for Mapping?

XML Feature Modeling!

Page 7: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

Create Models, not just Drawings− Smart placement tools build

intelligent engineering models for infrastructure management

Improve Standards− Symbology and annotation based

on asset attributes

Extend tools to design realm− Common framework promotes

common applications

Why XFM?

Move from desktop to

enterprise applications

More accurate models promote better understanding and downstream support

Reduce development, training and

maintenance costs

Moving to Bentley Map

• The XFM project is now the supported project

• GeoGraphics projects need to be imported into the XFM environment

• Your data does not need to be imported! Only the project description.

Page 9: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

If you are not an existing GeoGraphics user…• Define your project using the GSA.• Your feature definition should match

your current symbology• Define properties as required.• Map will recognize your features and

add properties automatically!

To really take advantage of XFM you may want to…

• Evaluate current feature model− Consolidate features by using PBS?− Consolidate features by using PBA?

• Evaluate placement and editing tools− Take advantage of standard placement

library

Page 11: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

Property Based Annotation and Symbology

• Symbology changes based on properties

• Annotation tied directly to properties

Page 12: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

Adopt PBA and PBS

• Four monument features

• Consolidate to one

• Drive placement by class. Based on class, the appropriate cell is placed.

• Optional annotation based on ID

Reduce features, reduce schema

complexity, increase quality based on

PBA, PBS use

Page 13: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

Dynamic Feature Scoring (DFS)

• A process by which Bentley Map recognizes features

• For XFM, features are recognized if the level is defined in the schema

• For GeoGraphics projects, a check is made of the feature linkage.

• Editing or reset of the feature causes and PBS and PBA rules to be run

Page 14: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

DFS - Advantages

• One feature model to support• GeoGraphics and MicroStation

feature models automatically supported

• Easy implementation for new users• Easy adoption of XFM features

Page 15: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

Easier Placement

• Lot line feature in Mytown – 5 commands

• Reduce to standard Place, Edit, Delete commands with many options.

Simpler interface, easier operation,

easier training

Page 16: Bentley Map, Bentley Cadastre and XML Feature Modeling in Bentley’s Geospatial Applications Keith Raymond, Bentley

Customization

• With the new capabilities, can your processes and data be improved to support other departments?

Enforce correct placement by requiring

connection to existing features
