Biographical Note

Benjamin B. Janney was born in Muncie on February 12, 1927 to Harry Lester Janney and HelenBowman Janney. He was active in the Muncie Civic Theater, performing in several productions. Heserved in the U.S. Navy and attended Ball State University. He graduated magna cum laude from thePasadena Playhouse in 1950. He served for more than 30 years as Director or Production Stage Managerfor numerous Broadway Theatre productions including "Irma La Douce," "Photo Finish," "Ben Franklinin Paris," "Not Now Darling," "The Pirates of Penzance," and "Dracula." He also served as ProductionManager or Director for numerous regional theatre productions, especially with the Corning SummerTheatre which was established in the Corning Glass Center of Corning, New York. He worked withseveral famous actors including Joan Fontaine, Peter Ustinov, Andy Griffith, Lawrence Olivier, andClaudette Colbert. He died February 12, 2008, on his 81st birthday, in Sharon, Connecticut where he hadlived for 15 years following his retirement.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes production documents for many of the plays Janney produced between the1950s and the 2000s, his personal scrapbooks, theatrical programs, photographs, audio-visual materialspertaining to his numerous productions, and a personal collection which includes an original andpublished script collection, and an autographed and related documents collection containing documentsboth from contemporary actors and actresses, as well as from famous actors from the 18th and 19thcenturies.
