Benefits of
improved mapping
February 2020
The information found within is a high level representation of the data collected to support mapping improvements for Members of Ontario One Call.
Additional details on the benefits of these changes that may not be captured in this presentation are available by contacting us at [email protected], or call 1844-257-9490 ext 8200.
Introduction
In December 2017, Ontario One Call changed the way in which we notify Members, going from street segment to map selection notification. The new map selection based notification takes the map selection made by the excavator or Ontario One Call agent, and compares it to the coverage our Members have in our system. If the two overlap, the Member will be notified.
This has increased the accuracy of notification considerably, resulting in a reduction of unnecessary notifications. However, this reduction can only be achieved if the Member provides accurate, defined mapping.
Undefined mapping Defined mapping
Member has mapping coverage in the entire area and will receive all requests in this area.
Member has mapping coverage only where they have infrastructure and will receive requests only if the map selection overlaps their mapping coverage.
What is the difference in Undefined and Defined mapping?
What the figures say about MSN
The ratio of members’ notified per request made has reduced significantly since the change was made in December 2017.
This shows a clear indication that Map Selection Notification has removed unnecessary notification by over 1 member per request.

How much can defined mapping help a member reduce
unnecessary notification?
This graph displays the notifications for both members over the last 4 years (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).
Member ‘B’ improved their mapping to defined mapping achieved a large reduction. The member has also confirmed that the reduction was a removal of notifications that they did not require as they did not have infrastructure in the area. This confirms that the change did not put any of their infrastructure at risk but did reduce the burden and associated cost for the member.

3. Review your internal mapping and identify areas where improvements can be madea. When a locate is completed and a discrepancy is discovered in your own mapping, what happens to
this data?4. Update your mapping coverage with Ontario One Call and reduce the buffer in areas of high mapping
