Retirement
Participation in the Teachers Retirement System
(TRS) is mandatory for all regular non–exempt
classified employees with a work commitment of
half time or more.
All exempt (monthly paid) employees will have an
option of participating in either the Teachers
Retirement System (TRS) or the Optional
Retirement Plan (ORP). All exempt employees will
have 60 days from the date of employment to
select a retirement plan. Failure to make an election
will result in being enrolled in the Teachers
Retirement System.

election at any time during your employment at
AU.
Regardless of the date of your election,
contributions will be deducted retro to the first
date of eligibility.
Under TRS, employees contribute 6.00% of
their gross salary and the state contributes 14.27%.
Under ORP, the employee contribute 6.00% of their
gross salary and the state contributes 9.24%.

Tax Sheltered Annuities/Deferred
Compensation
AU offers both 403(b) and 457(b) plans through Fidelity,
VALIC and TIAA-CREF. These plans allow employees to
defer income tax on part of salary. Payment of state and
federal taxes on the deferred portion is not required until
the year it is withdrawn by the employee.

Roth 403(b) & 457(b)
AU offers Roth 403(b) and 457(b) plans
through VALIC. After-tax Roth contributions
are combined with your pre-tax 403(b) and
457(b) plans, towards the $18,000 or $24,000 limits.

Retirement Benefits for New Hires
For university employees hired on or after January 1,
2013, health insurance contributions at
retirement will be based on years of service.
The BOR voted to make the change for individuals
hired on or after January 1, 2013. If you retire with 10
years of service the employer contribution will be 15%.
As years of service increase the contribution
percentage increases to a maximum of 70 percent.

New Hire Enrollment
Benefit enrollment for all new hires must be
completed within 30 days of his/her hire
date, otherwise, the ability to elect coverage
is delayed until the next Open Enrollment
period, which is generally each fall.
Benefits are effective the date of employment
if hire date is the first working day of the
month. Otherwise, benefits are effective the
first of the following month.

New Hire Enrollment (cont.)
Coverage elected during open enrollment will be effective January 1 of the following year. Documentation is required to verify dependent eligibility for all dependents. Acceptable documents are: Birth Certificate, Marriage License, adoption or legal guardian papers ortax forms.
Exceptions are qualifying events promoting a change of status such as a birth, adoption, marriage, or divorce. Documentation supporting qualifying events must be submittedwithin 30 days of the event.

AFLAC Supplemental Insurance
Supplemental insurance is available through American Family Life Assurance Corporation (AFLAC) to all regular employees with a work commitment of half time or more.
Available plans include: cancer insurance, hospital indemnity plan, and personal accident plan.

Health Savings Account (HSA)
AU allows employees who are enrolled in theConsumer Choice HSA Plan to set up an HSA.USG will match the employee’s contribution to their HSA plan up to $375.00 for enrollment in single coverage and up to $750.00 for enrollment in family coverage. This match is made concurrently with the employee’s contribution.
Employees can use the funds that have beencontributed into the account for Qualified Medical Expenses (QME).

Workers’ Compensation
All employees are covered, even if off campus conducting business on behalf of the institution.
Reporting of an “incident” (does not require treatment) or
“accident” (does require treatment) is handled using different
processes.
An “incident” does not require treatment. Examples: Stumping
your toe or a paper cut that requires a band aid, etc. Incidents
will be reported to the Human Resources Divisions, Benefits and
Data Management Section using the “Incident Only Form” but
would not require your supervisor to report the claim to the
Department of Administrative Services (DOAS).

An “accident/injury” requiring treatment must be reported toDOAS by your supervisor. The number to call is 877-656-7475. If you require immediate treatment, go to the nearest emergency
room. Your supervisor may request additional information from you so that
he/she can evaluate the situation that occurred and resulted in the incident, accident/injury. Please cooperate with your supervisor and provide information on what occurred. This will help your supervisor determine possible corrective measures that we can take, such as retraining, or updating equipment, etc., to prevent a reoccurrence.
If you are a supervisor, you will be expected to review what took place, determine if actions can be taken to prevent a reoccurrence, and document your review and any corrective measures that you implement. You will hear more about this in the manager orientation program.”
