CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS

2009-2013 My specialization lies at the interface of American Indian natural resource management, environmental sustainability, and globalization, and I am writing several articles and developing a book based on recent research with the Nez Perce Tribe about large dams, Pacific salmon, and the world-economy in the Columbia River Basin. I also sustain interests in expanding my research to include Southwestern watersheds and combining field sites in Russia, Canada, Norway, Tasmania, Chile, and the United States.

Present (Summer 2011) Fieldwork for comparative research in the Kamchatka

Peninsula, Russian Far East: I aim to ascertain how indigenous people (e.g. Itelmen) respond to global development of local resources and cultural property, and how this human struggle may be related to certain keystone species facing the risk of possible extinction, such as Pacific salmon.

Present - 2004 Dissertation follow-up project, Lower Snake River Basin and Nez Perce Social, Economic, and Environmental Analysis: Conduct follow-up Interviews, rank size of business revenues, annual budgets for stakeholders, and land ownership on the Nez Perce reservation, adjacent counties, Region Six, and the entire Lower Snake River Basin.

2004 Dissertation follow-up project with Nez Perce tribal programs: Three month project to complete dissertation objectives with Nez Perce Tribal Office of Legal Counsel, Water Resources Department, and Fisheries Program.

2004 Dissertation field project with Nez Perce tribal members and tribal programs: Informal interviews and participant observation with Cultural Resource Department and Tribal Members.

2003 Dissertation field project with County Assessor Offices (Nez Perce, Clearwater, Idaho, and Lewis Counties, Idaho) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, North Idaho Agency, Lapwai: Data acquisitions and informal interviews.

2002 Pre-dissertation fieldwork: Assessed feasibility of research project with informal interviews and participant observation on Nez Perce reservation, with tribal members, and in the lower Snake River basin.

2000 - 1999 Thesis field project with Tlingit and Tsimshian Medical Doctor and Traditional Healer, Dr. David Baines: Participant observation, interviews, and photographic project on Nez Perce reservation and Seattle Indian Health Clinic.

1999 Field project with Coeur d’ Alene Tribe: Dug water potatoes on Lake Coeur d’ Alene for Tribal Natural Resource Program and distributed to tribal elders.

1998 Field project with Coeur d’ Alene Tribe: Conducted informal interviews with Tribal Cultural Resource Director in oral and photographic history.
