Wewelcome each and every one to our 15th Annual Benchmark Bull Sale.Weappreciate so much the confidence you have expressed in our program.

After experiencing one of the driest years ever, 2010 turned out to be thewettest year ever. It was a trying year in some respects but moisture results ingrass and feed and for that, we are very thankful.

For those of you who sold your calves this fall, it was about $150 per calf betterthan last year and if you retained ownership, it appears the fat market willreward you.We fed a couple loads of Benchmark sired steers and were verypleased with how they gained; 4.32 pounds per day in the wettest conditionsever, and more pleased in how they graded. On the one load we shipped toCargill, we could not get a grid price but 80% graded AAA and the balancegraded AA, with 54% achieving CAB and 4% going sterling silver. That is quite afeat in that only 14% of cattle graded for CAB obtain the CAB grade. The secondload we sent toWashington Beef. The steers had a pay weight of 1438 poundsand they achieved an overall Grid Premium of $28.18 per head and brought back$1340.32 per head. 4% graded Prime and 92% graded Choice. Ourunderstanding is that Canadian cattle under COOL are not graded for CAB in theStates; otherwise, we would have earned more premium, as the previous loadwent 54% CAB. It is good to know that your cattle get the job done. That is whatit is all about, isn’t it?

We encourage you to study the EPD’s throughout this catalogue; without themour cattle would be average. However, with them, we can achieve the results asnoted above. In our opinion, being average is not good enough as increasedcosts make an average outfit marginal.

Our program is simple – Angus cows that wean a calf year in and year out at50% of her body weight or better, requiring minimal cost and care. Her calf mustbe able to go on and gain and grade.We believe our cattle must excel onpasture, in the feedlot and in the end, on the users plate.We take every steppossible to prove our cattle.

As you may be aware, there have been several genetic defects identified inAngus cattle over the years. The Canadian Angus Association identifies animalsthat have been tested for genetic defects and discloses such findings on thecertificate of registration. Each bull selling is proven free of any and all geneticdefects and is guaranteed as such.

We had been looking for a 6807 son for some time, the great breedingbull that he is. He is the sire of so many great ones including AlberdaTraveler 416, Connealy Dateline, Duff Encore, Rimrock, GDAR Traveler011, GDAR Traveler 044, GAR Commitment, OCC Anchor, OCC Echelon,OCC Emblazon, T510, Sitz Traveler 9929, Woodhill Alliance and likelyothers that I have missed. And for daughters one could go on and on.Then when we came across a young son out of a true breeding gem, weknew we had to own Baron. Could turn out to be the best money we’vespent on a bull.

The dam of Baron, GAR EXT 704, is an own daughter of the immortalEXT. She is a flush sister to GAR Exaltation 3144 and the record valuedGAR EXT 614 who sold one-half interest for $230,000. 704 has had embryo flushes sell for $40,000, pregnancies bring as high as $80,000and produced a daughter at $170,000 valuation, plus many others. 704as of spring 2008 had 33 daughters in production with a combinedweaning ratio of 103, an IMF ratio of 103 and an REA ratio of 100 on 83scanned progeny.

Baron is per fect on his feet and legs, has a great hip and as good of arear quarter as you’ll find. He is deep and wide based. He has ampleperformance with a 725 lbs. weaning weight and a 1288 lbs. yearlingweight. He scanned a %IMF of 5.03 with a 13.4 REA and had a 38 cmscrotal. His EPD profile indicates above average growth and gainabilityas well as milk, and his carcass EPDs indicate good marbling andincreased REA.

Payoff is a bull we bought in partnership with Ole Farms in the springof 2005. We were looking for a bull that would moderate frame, leavingthick, deep, easy-doing offspring with carcass quality second-to-none.After his five crops of calves were tested, his EPDs have proven very,very desirable. Study them carefully, they are hard to beat. Sired by thecarcass great and calving-ease sire Future Direction, who shows %IMFof +0.84 with a REA of +0.77, Payoff has lived up to every expectation.His calves are born so very easy and are the most vigorous calves wehave encountered. Payoff is a paternal brother to the very recent$55,000 Grand Champion at the Denver Angus Sale, 2008.Payoff ’s dam has been reported to be at the very top of the list at Standard Hill. She is by RP 3RD Bushwacker, who is well known for hisvery productive females, as well as great WW and YW EPDs with carcasstraits that reduce fat. It should be noted that Traveler 6G is a paternalbrother to Gardens Prime Time, the sire of the No. 1 proven dam forIMF. We really feel Payoff has become a critical step in ourquest to develop cattle that willthrive in our environment andmove forward our goal of “makin’the grade.” His sons have beenvery well accepted in our lastthree sales. Our pursuit of efficient carcass cattle took us to Green Garden Angus,spring of 2008. There we found Prime Star 1029. As indicated above,his bir th weight was low, his weaning weight was 63% of his mother’sweight and his average daily gain was 5.60 lbs./day giving him a 365Dweight of 1597 lbs. His IMF scan ratioed at 113 and he had a scrotal of42.4 cm. His 1110 lbs. dam is by Matrix, who ranks in the top 2% of thebreed for Marbling. The Matrix daughters are keepers at Green Gardenbeing moderate, easy fleshing, high scanning cattle that are at the topin decreased cow energy requirements with he himself showing a 15.93$EN savings. The sire of 1029 is none other than the No. 1 Proven Marbling Sire Garden’s Prime Star who was the high-selling bull to Express and Monarch at the Green Garden 2005 sale. He recorded an IMFratio of 177. His dam Jilt C242 S1 who is by T510 was the record-sellingcow at $280,000 in the 2009 Express Ranches Big Event Sale. Prime Star1029 had the highest GeneSTAR results of the sale with Quality Grade at17.02 and scored six stars for feed efficiency. He is one of only eight2007-born bulls on the Canadian registry that is 0.81 or betterfor Marbling. As a matter of interest, two others of the eight are Benchmark bulls. The ability to calve easy, grow and gain rapidly and efficiently to market weight, have a moderate mature size and hang upa superior carcass is all important to us; thus, the offering by GardensPrime Star 1029.

Expected Progeny Differences

With all the data that comes with each bull, I’m sure at times it must beoverwhelming. In order to use body composition EPD’s of ultrasound data totheir full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of the ultrasoundterminology.

Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls andheifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at thenumbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

RIB FAT: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13thribs - the location a carcass would be split into quarters in the coolerreported in inches. Rib fat is the main factor in the USDA Yield Gradeequation.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): An area measurement of the longissimus dorsi, or ribeye muscle - reported in square inches. This image tends to be the mostdifficult to collect and requires the most highly skilled interpreting technician. Both the rib fat and ribeye area measurements are taken fromthe same image.

RUMP FAT: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal, reported in inches. The rumpfat measurement coupled with the rib fat measurement, is used to determine more accurately the overall external body fat, enhancing the accuracy of predicting percent retail product (PRP). In most cases, an animalwill exhibit more fat over the rump than the rib due to physiological processof “laying on fat.” Therefore, more variation is often displayed in the rump fatmeasurements of a contemporary group than the rib fat. This image is highlyrepeatable and is the least difficult to collect or interpret.

INTRAMUSCULAR FAT (%IMF): This measurement determines the amountof fat within the muscle (similar to marbling) and is reported in “%”. Thismeasurement should be collected when cattle are maintaining a high levelof nutrition. The field technician collects four images and the values generated by the interpreting software are averaged for an overall %IMF.

The Angus Associations, both AAA and CAA have adopted the CUP(Centralized Ultrasound Processing) program for Ultrasounding Carcass Data andare using this information for formulating Carcass EPD’s. This is the 14th year wehave provided ultrasound measurements as taken by certiWed technicians fromWindy Ridge Livestock. We feel it is very important that you, our valued customer, know what is under the hide as that really does determine value. Ithas been determined through many studies that carcass traits are highly heritable and that feeding has only a marginal eUect upon the resulting carcass- genetics determine carcass quality!

Canadian Elite Cow Criteria :1. The cow must be enrolled in the Canadian Angus Per formance Program.

2. The cow must have a calf with a 205-day weight recordedwithin the past 18 months.

3. The cow must have her first calf no later than the within-herd average age of first calving plus 30 days. The within-herdaverage calving age is calculated individually for each herd.

4. The cow must maintain a regular calving interval.

5. The average of the cow’s first three calves’ weaning weightratio must be at least 105. If she fails to do this with her firstthree calves, she can qualify later providing the average progeny weaning weight ratio is 105, and she meets the other requirements.

6. The cow’s calf must be in a contemporary group with no lessthan 10 herd mates to determine the weaning weight ratio.
