Library Report
Before school and at lunch the library is a busy and creative space. Students are welcome to come and enjoy the activities and games the Library has to offer. This term, many students have become keen coders, exploring Code.org, Tynker, Blockly and Scratch on the computers, while others have been using Lightbot, Daisy Dinosaur and Osmo on the ipads. There is a strong following for chess, with all of the boards being used every session. We also have many students coming in to read, borrow, play cards and board games, design marble runs, draw and complete origami projects. Mr Kelly runs a Magic Club in the library twice a week, teaching groups of students how to amaze and confuse their friends. On Fridays we have started to run a Coding Club for those students that want to learn the fundamentals of
coding. The latest addition to the library lunch program is ‘STEM challenge Tuesdays’ and so many students lined up ready to be involved.
During our library lessons Kindergarten and Year 1 have been focusing on learning parts of a book, concepts of print and completing author studies. Senior students have been researching History, Science and Geography topics such as early explorers, earthquakes, significant Australians, natural disasters and indigenous peoples of the world. Some Year 5 and 6 classes have been continuing to improve their skills in purposeful use of technology. They have been logging into their student portals, navigating to Office 365 and learning to use Sway to search for pictures, collate their information and design their research presentations. To help with their presentations, students have been learning about Creative Commons and its usefulness in finding pictures that are free of copyright, while also ensuring that they are completing a reference list of the books and online resources they use. Around the Classroom 2C It’s hard to believe that we have only 3 weeks left of the school year. We are definitely not in holiday mode yet with so many exciting events between now and the end of the term.
2C were incredibly excited to have Mrs Moffatt teach them a persuasive writing lesson two weeks ago. Students wrote convincing arguments for and against the topic ‘K-2 students should wear a sports uniform’.
We’ve had a busy week in Maths learning about the features of 3D objects. We found it difficult to find posters that accurately describe the features of a cube, sphere, cylinder, cone and prism so 2C students made their own posters using Comic Maker on the iPads. Students proudly have their posters on display in the classroom, some of which we have shared with you here.
What a fabulous year we have had in 2C! Wishing everyone a safe and happy summer break. Prue Campbell
