Basketball is Back!!!
Armidale Mini basketball is about to begin for the winter months on Mondays after school. The first mini basketball session is Monday 1 May when all players turn up to register and play a game.
Kinder – Yr 2 will run at 4-5pm, while years 3/4 and years 5/6 will be from 5pm -6pm. This is nice and early for the winter months.
Games are held at The Den, located at AHS. Just turn up at the correct time and get put into a team. Come along and try it out for a week to see if you like it, new players are always welcome.
Participation for miniball is $45 per term. That’s it, no other cost. Uniforms are supplied for all players. Just bring a water bottle and joggers.
We have a free training session on Wednesday afternoons at 4.30 - 5.30 at The Den and this is open to all students, even if they do not play basketball. There is no cost to this training.
If you would like to participate in this fabulous game, please contact Judy Monaghan on 67727771 or 0417622859 or catch us on email at [email protected] We put all children into teams with as many friends as possible.

Ben Venue Public School…
where great things are always happening!
Welcome to Week 2 Term 2 Monday 1, May 2017
I am thrilled to return to Ben Venue this term and am excited to continue to implement improvements identified by the school
community in 2016. Thank you to Jeanenne Gale who did an amazing job leading the school in my absence and Nicole Frost
who relieved as Stage 2 AP in Jeanenne’s absence. I would also like to acknowledge the dedication and support of all staff who
ensured it was “business as usual” and continued with the exceptional programs BVPS is known for.
Congratulations and best wishes to Ami Robinson who was successful in gaining a position as a Learning Management and
Business Reform (LMBR) Training and Deployment Officer until the end of the year. Ami will be replaced by Demelza Simmon
and Melissa Walsh.
NAPLAN
During Week 3 students in Year 3 and Year 5 will sit the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). The
data provided from these assessments is useful in determining future priorities for our school as well as providing us with a big
picture of how our school is performing in Literacy and Numeracy in comparison to other schools in the state. Class teachers
will be familiarising students with the test format and the way in which questions should be answered. Wherever possible,
changes to the normal home routine of students sitting NAPLAN should be avoided. A good night’s sleep and a healthy dinner
the night before will give students the best chance of performing well.
Help and Support required
One of our Year 4 students Hannah Whitton is currently in Westmead children’s hospital after a recent diagnosis of
Cardiomyopathy. Hannah has been placed on the heart transplant list and it is anticipated that Hannah will remain in hospital
for some time. At a time like this it is important to rally around our families. A Go Fund Me page has been established to raise
money for Hannah’s treatment. I have provided the link as follows: https://www.gofundme.com/umaean-help-for-hannah
Year 4 students at BVPS will be holding a fundraising event in the upcoming weeks to show their support and concern for
Hannah.
Congratulations
Earlier this year several students participated in the Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival Writing
Competition. This year over 370 adults and students participated from all over Australia. In the Verse
section, Neve Crotty (Year 6) was awarded first place and Ellesse Peltonen (Year 5) received a highly
commended award. Well done!
Customer Service Survey
Last year, in response to feedback we have worked hard to improve our levels of customer service and communication with parents. In an attempt to further improve our levels of customer service and communication I am seeking parental support to participate in a brief survey designed to provide me with feedback on our school performance in these areas.
If you would like to participate and help us improve please fill in the slip below and return to the front office. Your details will
be passed on to the state communications team and you will be sent a link to complete the survey. Lou Moffatt

From the Deputy’s Desk:
Voluntary Contributions
Each year, our school seeks a voluntary contribution from families to support the enhancement of educational programs. This year, we will be using funds raised through voluntary contributions to purchase robotics and coding resources, as well as continuing to update our interactive whiteboards. Our target contribution amount is $10,000. Achieving this amount will allow us to purchase a range of exciting robotics and coding resources that will support a progression of learning from Kindergarten through to Year 6.
Thank you to those who have already made their voluntary contribution. In each newsletter, you will see our fundraising thermometer, tracking the level of contributions received towards our target.
Parking at tennis courts
Please avoid using the tennis court parking near the bus bay. This is a busy location before and after school and not a safe place for students to be crossing the road.
Works on Erskine St
Council works on the Erskine St footpath have blocked access between the main school entry and the crossing. Work should be completed very soon. In the interim, students using the crossing should enter and exit the school via the gate at the school hall.
Sentral Parent Portal
Sentral portal experiences have varied for parents. In many cases we have had positive feedback on the facility. Thank you to those who have experienced difficulties for your patience. We are working with the developers to resolve issues as they arise. Information on each student’s page in the parent portal is the same regardless of the login used. Please inform the school if this presents an issue in your circumstances.

As part of our whole school You Can Do It program, all students in K-6 are working hard to consistently use and display the social and emotional skills of getting along, organisation, persistence, resilience and confidence both in the classroom and playground.
Some changes to our You Can Do It awards system this year includes introducing a ‘Star Student of the Week’ for each class. Everyday, students are recognised for displaying the behaviours of You Can Do It by receiving a raffle ticket to go in their classroom
You Can Do It box. Students aim to get as many tickets in the box as they can each day.
One ticket from every class is drawn each Monday morning to gain our ‘Star Students’ of the Week.’
As a reward, each ‘Star Student’ is recognised in their classroom, in the school newsletter and has the privilege of attending our new STAR Room at lunchtime on Fridays. The STAR Room is a place for our ‘STAR Students’ to gather and join in a range of activities
including games, board games, use iPads and do craft activities.
Congratulations to all our students listed below.
AROUND THE CLASSROOM
3E - Welcome to Term 2! I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday and is ready for a productive term.
We have rebooked our Saumarez excursion for Friday 19 May. This excursion will provide a wonderful insight into local history and complete our History unit from Term 1.
This term will include NAPLAN, a geography unit on our neighbours focusing on Bali and a science unit called Night and Day. Our English unit focuses on adventure story writing. I eagerly anticipate many entertaining stories being written and shared! I am very impressed with the enthusiastic use of imagination in writing so far.
Parent interviews can be booked online or by phone. I look forward to meeting with all parents on either Thursday 11 May or Monday 15 May.
Please ensure your child has at least two HB lead pencils, a glue stick, a ruler and scissors. Some pencils were looking very short by the end of last term!
Thank you, Kerrie Edmunds
2S - Students have enjoyed a fabulous Term 1 and are ready to take on a busy and exciting Term 2! During Term 1 we experienced a fantastic excursion to the Old Teachers College and Museum of Education as part of our History unit 'The Past in the Present'. 2S learned about the long and interesting history of the college, as well as how life would have been for a school student one hundred years ago! Our recounts of the excursion contained well thought out comments about the many differences between school now and school in the past.
We have had fun with our Art unit about the artist Pablo Picasso, where we have learned about the technique of cubism...with some of our own fantastic masterpieces created!
During our Science unit 'Watch It Grow' we have witnessed the growth and development of a mealworm whilst making further predictions about their life stages.
2S have made great efforts on the sporting field with a number of students being selected to participate in the cross country event late last term, with some excellent results. We look forward this term to our assembly item and hope that many parents can come to watch us perform! Sue Shaw
Sydney Academy of Chess Inter School Chess
Competition
On Tuesday 28 March 2017, eleven students from Ben Venue Public School
competed at the Sydney Academy of Chess Interschool Chess Competition,
held at The Armidale School Memorial Hall.
The event was the biggest school chess competition ever held in this region
with approximately two hundred students from various primary and
secondary schools attending. Students travelled from the Tamworth, Inverell
and Armidale areas.
Students were Michael Bogeholz, Jeanie Inglis, Leonardo Wright, Jack
Coddington, Ethan Devine, Devika Wilson, Lucas Howlett, Liam Scotchmer,
Ellesse Peltonen, Thomas Drew and Sophie Ridley,
Time clocks were used and strict chess rules were observed. All students
played a Swiss competition with seven rounds. Ben Venue students soon
became fierce competition for their opponents with everyone in the team
winning or drawing games!
Jack Coddington was one of only three primary aged students from the
tournament to win four of his seven games, earning him a medal. Well done
Jack!
All students were impeccably behaved and great sportsmanship was
displayed all day. A big thanks to Hannah Coddington and Chris Ridley for
transporting students on the day, and to all the other parents who
volunteered transport.
We look forward to going back again next year!
Hockey News
Our boys and girls hockey teams
competed in the National Primary
Games in Tamworth during the first
weekend of the school holidays. Both
teams displayed outstanding
sportsmanship and skill with our boys
remaining undefeated throughout the
tournament and our girls conceding
just one 1-0 loss…to the boys! Well
done to a fabulous group of players
and thank you to the wonderful
parents who travelled down to support
and cheer the sides on.
