My family and I recently saw theexcellent Mister Rogers’

Neighborhood documentary. If youhaven’t had the chance to see it yet, Ihighly recommend it. Growing up, I hadseen the Mister Rogers show a handfulof times but didn’t appreciate at thetime what an interesting and somewhatrevolutionary figure he was. One aspectof the film that certainly resonated withme was the concept of an actualneighborhood. One that included allsorts of people living near one another, forming a community. It seems like anidea that’s easily taken for granted: howa kind gesture or thoughtful actionperformed by a neighbor in turn canhelp influence the (small) world we areall living in. Often we go about our livessomewhat immune to the needs ofthose who may live just a door or twoaway. The nicer we are to each other, themore conscientious we are of eachother’s homes and whereabouts, thethoughtfulness and kindness we extendtowards one another has a ripple effectand Mr. Rogers knew that. It’s anattitude/hope/expectation that reachesbeyond one’s neighborhood and out tothe world at large. Even if the idea ofspreading kindness towards one’sneighbors seems an obvious thing to do,sometimes it takes a few hours with thelegendary Mr. Rogers to be remindedthat the simplest of lessons are often theones most taken for granted and usuallythe most important.

The other part of the movie thatresonated with me was the respect andattention Fred Rogers gave to the voicesand specific needs of children. You comeaway from the movie feeling like hereally heard them and devoted his life tocreating a platform that supportedwhatever it was they were experiencingin a safe, nonjudgmental way. It was anovel endeavor at the time to offer atelevision show geared towards kids thatdidn’t involve the wacky antics of clownsor animated coyotes trying to blow uproadrunners. Mr. Rogers wasn’t themost outrageous or funny or excitingguy in the room, but he made every

child feel like he/she was important andthat his/her voice really mattered.

It struck me as particularly timelythat my family would see thisdocumentary a few days before ourmiddle son, Spencer, was given thechance to have his voice heard in amonumental way. He joined KidScoopMedia: an organization based in CulverCity that allows children of all ages to beheard. The group, founded by MichelleMayans ten years ago, connects boy andgirls with unique opportunities, usuallyby way of allowing them to conductinterviews with influential people andthen write about their experiences.

Since 2008, Michelle has sent many kidreporters (or ‘scoopers’ as they’recommonly referred to) to the tarmac ofLAX to greet the arrival of Air Force One.They interviewed Vice President Joe Bidenmultiple times around Los Angeles and acontingent traveled to the White House afew years ago to sit down with PresidentObama. They continue to cover variousWhite House events. Scoopers have alsocovered NASA launches and red carpetmovie premieres, interviewed actors, musicians and most recently met with theParkland shooting survivors/activistsDavid Hogg and Emma Gonzalez whenthey were in town to talk about gun safetyand voter registration.

Our son was lucky enough to getinvolved after Michelle put out a call onher Facebook page for students who wereinterested in musical theater, specificallythe show Hamilton. A month later,Spencer (and his mom) found themselveson Broadway in New York City where, not only did Spencer get to sit in the 4throw of this still-impossible-to-get-tickets-for show, but after the final bow, he was

invited on a backstage tour and then gotto interview the show’s two musicaldirectors. For a kid who knows everythingabout Hamilton yet hadn’t experiencedseeing it on Broadway, it really was adream come true. After the interview wasover, Spencer had a week to write anarticle that will appear in a Culver Citypublication (we’ve published Spencer’spiece in this edition of the newsletter, printed right next to this article).

There was a cost involved asKidScoop Media is a nonprofit and is atthe mercy of private funding/donationsto stay in business. However, operatingcosts are relatively low and part/most ofthe fee incurred goes towardsscholarships so that kids of allsocioeconomic backgrounds can stilltake part in these unique opportunities.Coming up in October will be a CulverCity School Board Kid Forum at whichScoopers will have the chance to pepperboard members with questions directlypertaining to issues that involve andconcern them the most. It should be aninteresting and lively evening and nodoubt will make an impact on both thekids and school officials alike.

Whether it’s giving a platform to kidsand letting their voices be heard orsimply acting like a good, kind persontowards a fellow neighbor, there’s notime like the present to do somethingpositive for our community and makeevery day a little bit better and brighterthan the one that came before it.

Mr. Rogers would approve.

Won’t you be my neighbor? MyHamilton Experience

By Spencer Lee

On July 31, I saw the musical“Hamilton,” on Broadway in

New York City. I fell in love with thismusical since I first heard thesoundtrack a year ago. I immediatelythought Lin Manuel Miranda, as wellas the cast and crew behind Hamiltonwere geniuses. With the smart andcatchy hip-hop lyrics, along withstunning vocals. Hamilton truly is arevolutionary creation that deserves amillion standing ovations.

I traveled to New York to interviewthe musical directors of Hamilton onassignment for Kids Scoop Media. This is an organization that helps kidshave life changing opportunitiesthrough interviewing politicians, celebrities and activists/leaders. I wasso excited to have this chance tointerview Hamilton’s musicaldirectors on Broadway because notonly is it my favorite show and I had alot of questions, I had never seen it onBroadway.

I got to sit in the fourth row, which was so awesome because I wassitting so close to the stage. After theshow, I got to meet the people I wasinterviewing at the stage door. I hadmy questions prepared, and I wasready to go. I got to go on to thestage, and I met the actress whoplayed Angelica! She was really nice, and after saying hello, I went intothe director's’ office.

I met with the musical director,Kurt Crowley, and the associatemusical director Ian Weinberger, andI had a very friendly, casual, interesting, and informative interviewwith them. They were so nice andwilling to take time, at 11:00 at night,to answer all the questions I had. They told me many interesting thingsthat I didn’t know about Hamilton.

They both said that as musicaldirectors, they were in charge of everysingle note of every single song. Inaddition to conducting the orchestra, they also play the keyboard during theshow, and that keyboard is monitoredon a TV screen that the actors seefrom the stage. That’s what helps keepthem on track while the conductor isplaying the keyboard. Weinberger saidalmost all of Hamilton is sung, butsome effects are computer-generated,such as pre-recorded beatboxing. Headded that part of being a musicaldirector is to know when to start

conducting again after applause or totake a longer pause if necessary.

Kurt Crowley described hisexperience while conducting theperformance that Vice President MikePence watched back in 2016. Iremember hearing about it at the timeand reading that Pence walked out asthe cast spontaneously confronted himdirectly from the stage. They wereprotesting against his anti-immigration policy. Crowleymentioned that the cast had alwaysplanned to speak to the audience afterthe show because it was the period oftime in which casts all over Broadwaywere asking for donations. Heexplained that Pence did walk out butit wasn’t necessarily because of theactors or the audience. Secret Serviceoften tells the person they’reprotecting when it’s time to go and thetiming of his exit may have been

coincidental with the curtain speech. As they say in Hamilton: You don’tknow the real story unless you’re “Inthe room where it happens.”

Crowley has worked with LinManuel-Miranda since his firstBroadway musical, “In the Heights,”eight years ago. The first time heheard any songs from Hamilton, itwas during the White HousePerformance for the Obamas in 2015.He was impressed but wasn’t surebigger audiences would appreciate it.”[When I first heard Hamilton], Ithought it was smart, but notcommercial. Boy was I wrong.” Oncethe collection of songs became a fullmusical, Michelle Obama went to seeit on Broadway and Ian Weinbergerhappened to be conducting for thefirst time at that performance. “It wasterrifying” he said.

One question I had was: “Whathappened to Peggy?” The thirdSchuyler sister was featured in thebeginning but then seemed to fade

away without being mentioned again.Weinberger explained that Lin ManuelMiranda wanted there to be a triobecause it’s better for harmonies andmimicked girl groups like Destiny’sChild. In real life Peggy died young ofYellow Fever and the other sistersplayed a more important role becauseboth were in love with Hamilton.

I learned so many other interestingfacts, such as: Hamilton is now frozen, meaning nothing can be changedabout the musical. There was a songin the show that is not on thesoundtrack called “Tomorrow There’llbe More of Us.” When I asked whythat was the case, the directorsexplained that they wanted to give theaudience a little surprise. I learnedthat Hamilton is touring all over theworld because there are clocks inCrowley’s office that shows what timeit is at each performance.

In conclusion, I had a great timeinterviewing Kurt Crowley and IanWeinberger. I thought their answers to

my questions were very impressive, and I am so glad I learned all of thisinformation, because I thinkHamilton is a masterpiece. Since I amHamilton’s biggest fan, I appreciateknowing all the secrets and fun factsbehind Hamilton.

The Balboa Pavilion is located on aprominent point on the Balboa

Peninsula. It is a historic edificedating to 1906 built to promote thesale of lots in the Newport Harborarea. Its original builders were wellrewarded and of course Balboa andthe surrounding Newport Harbor areais now grown and succeeded beyondall expectation. The Pavilion wasoriginally a prominent dance pavilionwhich featured bathing beautycontests and a bingo game which was

later closed down because of thegambling prohibition. The Gronskyfamily bought it shortly after WW IIbecause it had become somewhat rundown. The family replaced the pilingssupporting the structure and made ita sport fishing hub for the area andfor a time maintained a monopoly onsupplying bait for the local sportfishermen. That monopoly was lost, but the family acquired acomprehensive shell collection whichwas an attraction for a time, but thatcollection is now housed at theBowers Museum. The building

needed further restorative work in1961 when it was sold to theDucommon family which did indeedspend money to restore the structure

to its original look. It is again beingoperated for the sports fishing tradeand it can be accessed on the trip toNewport.
