The Sharks: Sam, Joshua, Ty, Daniel, Lachlan, Joel, Hamish and Benjamin

Season 2012: The Under 7 Sharks enjoy Big Football.

With most of the under 7 Sharks graduating from peewee’s last year, there was great anticipation from the players to start ‘big’ football - to play on a bigger field and with bigger goals.

The gala day was the first chance for the team to meet and have their very first run around as under7’s.

Guiding them through the year are no less than three coaches, all of whom played together in last years premiership winning Belwest men’s team (in division 9, yes they have that many Divisions!)

After a quick warm up and pep talk from the coaches, the Sharks were ready to start their 2012 season.

After three thoroughly enjoyable games full of running, tackling, passing, and shooting, the Sharks, and parents, were all quite weary, but all had a great time playing big football.

It was great to see the improvement and teamwork they are already developing from just three games during the gala day, and with a whole season ahead of games, training, and fun the Sharks are set for a great year.

Belwest Gala Day – Saturday April 28

The annual Belwest Gala day was held on Saturday April 28 fea-turing junior teams from peewee’s to u11’s. All teams played a round robin format that totalled 48 games across the day.

Belwest Gala Day 2012 - Thanks to all who took part

For most teams it was the first chance to meet each other, meet their coaches and managers and have the first run around of the year. All teams showed great energy, enthusiasm and made lots of noise as the first whistle of their round robin games sounded, surely aided by most having just had the last two weeks off on school holidays.

By the end of the games however there were plenty of tired looking players, though some still had energy to make that last run to join the canteen line.

The Peewee round robin saw 12 teams compete, with returning players from last year and brand new players to football and to Belwest. It was great to see the parents get involved in the games and help the kids, though there were quite a few tired parents as well by the end of the games.

A big thank you must go to the Committee for organising the day, the tremendous canteen and bbq helpers andthe referee’s.

Player roles in football between 8 - 12.

The FFA Curriculum encourages players at the young ages, 8 -12 to focus on skill , individual skill and more skill. These are the golden years for player skill development. But Coaches often want to win, or are unsure how to structure their teams. How often do we see teams with players instructed to stand in front of their goal or “never come over half way?”

• The focus should be on the individual skill development but a little structure helps

• All ACT representative teams play and are coached this way.• Players will learn the game/positions and be able to play in

different teams more easily when they get older.

Rationale: (For more go to FFA site)

In the 1-4-3-3 formation for (u12 and older) there are 3 lines with a balanced spread of players over the pitch (‘triangles’ of players) which creates good conditions for:

effective positioning play playing out combination football / short passing game creative and varied attacking play using the width of the field early disturbing and pressuring after losing possession

For youth players, the positions and the attached basic tasks are logical and recognizable, which makes learning to play as a team easier to develop. The Optus SSF formats 7 v 7 (1-3-3) and 9 v 9 (1-3-2-3) lead up to the 1-4-3-3 formation in a logical and me-thodical manner.

Quiz answers.Q1. 11 Q2. All (outfield can take throw-ins.) Q3. Latham Q4. Basil Q5. Thirty Q6. Tim Cahill others play in Australia Q7. Melbourne Victory - the other two have won the W-League, Q8. Terry Antonis the others are from Canberra. Q9. Germany Q10. Everton Q11. Melbourne Victory Q12. Brisbane Roar Q13. Canberra United Q14 Referee Q15 Ashleigh Sykes and Michelle Heyman (2)

Simple advice for u8/U9 Players:

• Team shape: 1-3-3. The team plays with 1 keeper, 3 defenders and 3 forwards.

• Defenders should always be close enough to forwards to get a pass and vice versa. ie. no player(s) apart from the goalkeeper should stand back way behind the play.

• Simply aim to get the team back into team shape when the ball goes out of play. Remember players at this age will find it hard to keep a team shape. Go easy!

• Keeper moves away from goal line - encourages players to move to the ball when required and play with their feet.

• The focus at this age is on individual skill development, all players should have equal game time and rotate through all positions.

FFA U8/U9 Formation: 1-3-3
