Hosea 1:2-3

Can God be Jealous?• Jealous (adj.):

• feeling or showing envy of someone or their achievements and advantages

• feeling or showing suspicion of someone's unfaithfulness in a relationship

• fiercely protective or vigilant of one's rights or possession

• Hebrew: “qana” (make zealous, provoke to envy)

• Greek: “zeloo” (earnest desire)

• If anyone has a right to be jealous, it’s God• Psalm 24:1, Matthew 25:26-30

God’s Jealousy…

• Is for us, His people (Matthew 23:37)

• Is a defining trait of God’s nature (Exodus 20:3-6)

• Is passionate and emotional (Deuteronomy 4:24, Song of Solomon 8:6)

• Has serious consequences (Joshua 24:19, Nahum 1:2)

• Has an element of altruism (pity for us)• A desire to restore: Ezekiel 39:25• We must be willing to return: Joel 2:18-19

The Source of His Jealousy:

• Idols: attempting to replace God• Romans 1:21-25

• We cannot live for both God and an idol• 1 Corinthians 10:20-21• 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

• The deadliest idols are those closest to the altar• Jesus’s warning: John 6:25-27

Feeling God’s Jealousy

• Idolatry = adultery (Jeremiah 3:6)• Gives birth to disconnection • (No Mercy, Not My People)

• Despite a stable and fulfilling relationship, Gomer strays (Hosea 3:1-2)

• Feeling God’s heart break: Hosea 2:1-13

• God’s goal is to “woo” us back: Hosea 2:14-20

How to Live under a Jealous God:

• Realize how detestable our sins are to God and FLEE!• 1 Corinthians 10:14; 1 Thessalonians 5:22

• Treat life like a planetarium, not a pie graph• Romans 12:1; Colossians 3:17

• Mimic God’s jealousy for the souls of the lost• Hate sin and keep others accountable (Numbers

25:11)• Build up, show love, encourage in the way (II

Corinthians 11:2)

• Witness the power of God’s jealousy in your life
