A Serial Story Continues:Missy the Miracle Cat by
Sylvia ComanResident Sylvia Coman has
been writing the story of Missyand her companions for the pastseveral months ...
Missy was still chuckling whenshe awoke at 5 a.m. the nextmorning. She woke Companion, who saw a Parchment on theirdesk and asked “What is our nextMission?”
“Well,” said Missy, “It says togo shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue. We are to be there at 6 a.m.” “Butthe store isn’t opened that early!”said a puzzled Companion. “No,”said Missy, “But the Manager is anold friend and he’ll be at the sidedoor at 6 just for us.” “Wait,” saidCompanion, “they don’t let cats ordogs in such a fancy store!” “Noproblem,” said Missy, “I’ll simplychange my outer outfit.”
Companion, even morepuzzled than ever, took a deepbreath. Suddenly Missy was goneand in her place was a charmingsleek young lady with green eyes, black hair and a beautiful blackwinter coat. Finishing were whiteboots, white gloves and abeautiful twinkle in her greeneyes.
“Do you think I’ll be let in withthis outfit?” asked Missy. Anastonished Companion replied,“Your change is most beautiful. But, how did you do that?” “Oh,it’s a secret. I’ll share it with you
some day soon.” And she justsmiled.
... to be continued.
Creative MusingsResidents met to “Think upon
things of March: St. Patrick’s Day,Easter, the hint of Spring andPassover.”
A few samples of end products:By Lois Sumner“I was coloring Easter eggs and
baking a ham when a Leprechauncame into the kitchen. He asked mefor a cookie that was decorated ingreen icing. I told him to go play inthe green grass.
Just then, all of our relativesarrived to eat and hide the eggs! Iwas SO exhausted at that point: Ijust jumped into bed.”
By Mary Kempf“The sky is blue, the grass is greenthe time is spring and all
goes well. However lovely things may bethere’s always one left to seeand this one is: God made us
it’s true.”By Mary Rose Brizendine“In the spring of the year we
celebrate St. Patrick on his ownspecial day with a parade in NewYork. This time of year, we alsoremember the two occasionsmentioned in the Bible - Passoverand Easter. These two events are thebasis of our beliefs by which we shapeour life.”
Wit & Wisdom forArbor Day

Julius Sterling Morton“I like trees because they seemmore resigned to the way theyhave to live than other things
do.”—Willa Cather
“In nature, nothing is perfectand everything is perfect. Treescan be contorted, bent in weird
ways, and they’re still beautiful.”—Alice Walker
“The best time to plant a treewas 20 years ago. The next best
time is now.”—Chinese proverb
“What is the good of your starsand trees, your sunrise and thewind, if they do not enter into
our daily lives?” —E. M. Forster“Trees and plants always looklike the people they live with,
somehow.”—Zora Neale Hurston
“And this, our life, exempt frompublic haunt, finds tongues in
trees, books in the runningbrooks, sermons in stones, and
good in everything.”—William Shakespeare
“It is well that you shouldcelebrate your Arbor Day
thoughtfully, for within yourlifetime the nation’s need oftrees will become serious.”

A New Topic for theWater Cooler
Julie Ackley-Black, MPCThe elevator at Belmont often
acts as the proverbial “watercooler” as folks wait for Otis toarrive and deposit them at theirdesired destination. Such was thecase early one evening as I chattedcasually with a resident waiting tobe taken to 2nd floor BINGO. Ourquiet conversation was suddenlypunctuated by a loud, forcefulbanging on the double doors toour left; the doors to theNeighborhood. “What’s in there? They can’t get out, can they?” theresident anxiously inquired as shequickly moved away from thedoor. What she didn’t know wasthat on the other side of thesecured door was “Anna,” a petite,soft-spoken woman of 93.
I reassured the resident that thedoors were secured, but more thanthat, I attempted to briefly assuageher obvious fear of what laybeyond those doors. This residentwas exhibiting, very concretely, her ignorance of this part ofBelmont and the wonderfulpeople who live there, and I knewthat her response was not anisolated one.
Fear can exist not only in thegeneral perception of society, butalso in people with dementia whoare fearful of the reactions ofothers. Those in the early stages ofdementia may have a sense ofshame, inadequacy, and low
self-esteem. They perceive thattheir status within society hasbeen reduced as a result of theirdiagnosis. The stigma associatedwith dementia can lead tostereotyping of all people withdementia as somehow falling intoone homogeneous category. Thisstereotyping inevitably leads todevaluing the potentialcontribution of the person withdementia, and can result in lesssocial interaction and an erodingof relationships.
“Anna” could never bepigeonholed. A high schoolgraduate, she was fun-loving,social and always striving toinclude others. Now being caredfor herself, “Anna” was once thetireless caregiver: for hergrandfather as a young woman, then for her mother andstep-father until their deaths. Herattempts at opening the secureddoor signaled not the wild actionsof an aggressive, combativeindividual, but rather the time togather friends to go out shopping.
How do we tackle stigma, stereotyping and fear? Educationand increased awareness arecertainly critical. Understandingthe stages of dementia can alsohelp mitigate misconceptions.Honoring individual talentsthrough activities within thecommunity as a whole may be oneof the most powerful ways toopen our minds and doors tothose with dementia.
Happiness HabitWhen you wake up in the
morning do you say: “Oh God ...it’s morning” or “Thank God, it’smorning and I look forward totoday.” Here are some tips toensure you wake up positive:
Essential #1: You Can OnlyHave 1 Thought at a Time This isthe key to feeling optimistic, enjoying your life, and fulfillingyour vision for a delightful life. You only can keep one thoughtin your head at a time.
Essential #2: Expect the BestWhat are you thinking about?Ralph Waldo Emerson oncesaid, “A man is what he thinksabout all day long.”
Essential #3: Strong AmbitionWishy-washy people do not govery far. People who get thingsdone are people who feel aprofound sense of mission.
Essential #4: Gumption toChange How You Think
The way you handlesituations has served you tosome degree. You have atremendous opportunity to feelmore confident and optimisticthan you ever may havedreamed possible.
Essential #5: PersistencePersistence is a key to feelinghappy. Keep plugging away eventhough you may not see theimmediate benefits. You aremuch more likely to get whatyou want -- eventually -- thanpeople who want it now.
Dot said “How happy this is!” whenshe saw her teddy bear.
Managers from Walgreens HikesPoint collected and passed out over25 stuffed animals as gifts to ourresidents. Betty enjoyed her puppy dog.
Isabel enjoys corned beef and greenbeer on St. Pat’s Day.
Abraham and Mary gave our Betty ahug.
