Expectations…..
I am often asked the question “How can I help my child be
successful in school?” My answer is always about setting
expectations. High academic expectations must be
communicated each and every day. Every opportunity to
discuss these expectations must be taken advantage of. Clear
models of how to meet those expectations must be present and
discussed. Tell them about what it takes to get accepted into
college. Show them your achievements, degrees, and awards.
Give all the details. It is a clear expectation that every student
at Belmont Ridge will be prepared to attend the post secondary
school of their choice. Ensuring that this expectation is met
requires a consistent effort by all of us. We must consistently
and repeatedly communicate what it takes to meet those
expectations. The academic study, effort, and determination
required must be consistently communicated. Teenagers do
listen to their parents and the other adults in their lives. Even
when they tell you or show you that they are not listening.
They are. We must work together to communicate everyday
that going on to higher education after high school is an
expectation that is not negotiable.
Thank you,
Mr. Timothy Flynn

Note from your PTSO President:
Dear Belmont Families,
Spring is in the air! It’s hard to believe how fast this school year has flown by. What a
great year it has been. We can’t slow down yet: SOL’s, concerts, promotion, planning for
next year…
The Diaper Dash was a big success with many generous donations. Thanks to all who
participated in this event to benefit out community and especially Kristan Ash for
organizing it.
“Seussical” the musical was a smash hit with sold out audiences most of the nights. Great
effort went into these performances. We are grateful for the efforts of Mr. Augustowski,
Ms. Lanham, and Mrs. Diehl on the teaching staff and parent volunteer leaders such as
Jennifer Ebbets and Julie Fletcher. There were so many other parent volunteers who gave
countless hours for the show. The biggest shout out goes to the amazing kids of Belmont
Ridge! They’re all going to Hollywood!
The April 26th
Family Dinner for rising 6th
graders was well attended with fun raffles and
giveaways. We look forward to this incoming class and know that they are in for an
amazing Belmont Ridge ride.
We are planning an awesome Teacher Appreciation Week starting on May 14 – 18. Look
forward to many unique and yummy surprises. This is the least we can do for this
fantastic staff. Stay tuned!

LIBRARY NEWS!
Our used book sale is going to be on May 29th
, 30th
, 31st, and June 1
st. Proceeds from the sale will be
used to support the library activities and the Belmont Ridge Book Club. Students can bring their
donations to either their language arts teacher or to the library staff. The used book sale would be a
great opportunity for students to purchase summer reading material at bargain prices. Please think
about donating your used books for others to enjoy and support our book club!
The 3rd
Annual Battle of the Books competition between the Belmont Ridge, Eagle Ridge, and Smarts
Mill Middle Schools’ after school book clubs was hosted by Rust Library on April 19th. Belmont
Ridge won this competition for the 3rd time by scoring 230 points. Smarts Mill came in second at 170
points and Eagle Ridge came in third at 160 points.
Starting April 30th
, the library participates in SOL testing by becoming the testing site with over 70
laptops wired to two hubs. As a result, we are not open for regular library services including extended
hours.
As the end of the year approaches, we would like to remind our students about their overdue library
books. All library books are due on May 25th
. Although there are no fines collected for overdue books,
they all have to be accounted for before school closes for summer holidays. Books that are lost have to
be paid for, and this can be done with either cash or a check. If you choose to pay by check, kindly
make your checks payable to Belmont Ridge Middle School. We would like to thank you for all your
co-operation in helping us get back the library books so that we can get them inventoried, sorted and
shelved for the new school year.
We also would like to thank our wonderful volunteers who have contributed lots of invaluable time
and effort in helping us run our library smoothly. It really makes a difference to have extra help with
tasks such as shelving that allow books to be more readily available to our students as they browse.

News from the Nurse!
I want to remind everyone that even though we are getting toward the end of the school year, it is important to
keep the clinic and school updated on any home/work/cell phone changes. This information is vital if we need
to contact you during the day.
Remember if your child needs medication during the remainder of the school year the parents must transport
the medication to the school. Any prescription medication must have a signed form from the physician. Forms
can be obtained from the clinic or the Belmont Ridge Middle School (BEM) website.
Rising 9th
Grade Parents:
Congratulations to our 8th grade students as they begin their adventure into high school. Is your student going
to participate in VHSL athletics in high school? If so, a physical examination is required. In order to play sports
next fall, the physical must not have been done prior to
May 1, 2012. Anything prior to this date is not considered current and will not be accepted for athletic
eligibility. VHSL forms needed to participate in athletics will be available in the main offices at SBHS and
THS towards the end May or on their school web page. Tryout information will be posted on the athletic
websites. Fall sports tryout will begin July 30, 2012
Parents of rising 6th
graders: Check your child immunization record
Parents if you have a rising 6th grader remember that they must have a current Tetanus, Diphtheria Pertussis
(Tdap) vaccination on file by August 27, 2012. If your child is missing this shot they will not be allowed to
enter school, unless they have a written note from the physician explaining why the shot is deferred. If your
child will not be old enough to receive the vaccination, a note from the doctor must be on file at BEM. Please
have this documentation to BEM before the cutoff date. There will be no grace period for those lacking the shot.
They will be excluded from school the first day of school.
Information for school year 2012-2013:
The process of closing down the clinic for the summer has begun. If your child presently has medication at
school (inhaler, nebulizer, daily medications, Epi-pens, diabetes medication, etc.) and will be required to take
these medications next year, please be aware that new doctors orders are required for each school year.
Information Regarding Medication Forms for 2012-2013 School Year
Physician order forms for medication, severe allergy, asthma, diabetes, and seizures will be sent home
at the end of this year for students who require medication at school. The forms will be in the student’s
final report card envelope. These forms are also accessible to you or your physician on the Loudoun
County Public Schools Student Health Services Web site: http://www.lcps.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=2014
Remember a new form for medication is required each new school year. Also, the medication must be
brought to school by an adult and must be in the prescription bottle from the pharmacy or in the original
packaging. Students are not allowed to transport any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to
school.
End of year medication pick-up:
Parents if you have medication in the clinic please pick-up the medication by June 8th
at 3:30 PM. LCPS
medication policy requires we destroy any medication not picked up. No medication will be held for the next
school term.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact the clinic.

Foreign Language Department
Seventh grade continues to be the entry level at which students will choose to continue with Spanish
or choose one of the other language offerings. Parents are advised to contact the student’s teacher for
level recommendations if there is any question about placement.
Level II/III Requirement
Please be advised that a solid B is encouraged for admission to Level II or III in foreign languages at
the high school. Parents are encouraged to discuss placement for next year with the student’s teacher.
In some cases, the path of success is to spend an additional year reviewing the foundational material so
as to have a solid base to build a high school foreign language career. Colleges are increasingly
interested in a long sequence in one language.
Final Review for End of Year Exams
A review packet will also be provided in May to help prepare for the final. It is indispensable that
students avail themselves of these opportunities to review.
National Competitive Exam Awards Spanish students competed in national exams in early spring to test their listening comprehension
skills and their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Awards will be given to students who placed.
RELAY FOR LIFE NEWS!!
Belmont Ridge's Relay for Life team is raising awareness and money for the American Cancer
Society this month. The team, consisting of 20 students, has already held two bake sales and
will sell snow cones on four Fridays to raise funds. A fundraiser parents can help with is
Bucket Day. On May 17 and 18, the Relay team will be asking for donations in the
Kiss 'n Go line where parents drop off and pick up their students. Any donation is
appreciated! The team will walk from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 2. For more
information, please contact counselor Terry Mawyer or language arts teacher Heidi Branch.
Make a difference in someone’s life -- fill the buckets! Thanks for your support!

“Autism Awareness”
The month of April was National Autism Awareness Month. Since the 1970s, the Autism Society has
been bringing awareness to communities around the nation and Belmont Ridge students took a stand
on the cause. The Bright Life Buddies (B.L.B), a group of students who meet weekly to foster
friendships amongst all students, had a great time planning activities for the last week of April.
Students and staff were receptive and engaged. They participated in the week’s events by wearing
blue, “Light it Up Blue,” to launch the week, walking one lap on the track to show support, buying and
wearing puzzle piece ribbons, placing their signature on a banner as a means to demonstrate their
awareness, and partaking in a Skittle Give Away. B.L.B also gave away Pinkberrry, I-tunes, Visa gift
cards, and 3 sets of movie tickets.
Belmont Ridge Middle School culminated the month of awareness by hosting a 5K/Fun Run on
campus. At 7am on Sunday, April 29, 2012, Belmont Ridge was the place to be for community
members, students, and faculty who wanted to show their support for Autism Awareness. Nearly 120
people found it a great way to spend Sunday morning and it was made possible by the efforts of many
people. Winners in various categories were presented with the medals purchased from Crown Trophy.
Ashburn’s Crown Trophy did a fabulous job of creating the medals for the run and kindly donated
custom Mylar inserts to highlight Autism Awareness.
Our school is thankful for the outstanding support of surrounding community businesses. Our local
Ashburn Chick-fil-A was a big hit with the kids. The first two winners of the Fun Run had big bright
smiles when they were given a plush toy and certificate for a free meal. All of the participants in the
Fun Run received a medal and a prize of their choice. Wegmans, in Leesburg, once again came to the
rescue by donating water and bananas to keep the runners going. The generosity of Phenom Gym is
appreciated. They provided the event with 2 shirts and gift cards to be used at their gym. KLF
Striders owner, Pana DeGooyer, donated a Fall Session of training for a youth runner.
Partnering with our high schools in the area is always a fun experience for our students. Tuscarora
Key Club did a wonderful job of keeping post at various check points on the course and directing
runners as needed.
Belmont Ridge has taken awareness to a different level! The teachers, custodians, administrative staff,
families, friends, and partners of Belmont Ridge Middle School are AMAZING! A special shout out
to Mr. St. Clair for designing the Autism Awareness t-shirt. Limited sizes are still available in C-13.
The expertise of seasoned runners Kauren Nordstrom, and Justin Fritzius (her husband), made the
event a wonderful experience. As a result of this event, over $400.00 was raised to support the
Organization for Autism Research and the Autism Program at Belmont Ridge.
Congratulations to the overall female winner Kelly Reilly of Belmont Ridge Middle School and our
overall male winner Lawrence Kusko of the Belmont Ridge Community.
Every walker and runner did an awesome job!
