Why is Invention/Innovation Important?• Brings about new tools and machines
• Manufactures products quicker
• Helps economic growth
• Improves our way of living
Invention vs. Innovation
• Invention: Creating brand new machines or devices that improve the human condition
• Innovation: Taking existing ideas/machines and improving them.
Advances in Transportation
Steamboat
• Invented by Robert Fulton in 1807• Did not use wind and sails • Improved transportation because it could move against the current of
a river• Created more opportunities for trade
Steam Locomotive
• Invented by Robert Stephenson in 1826• Forerunner for modern locomotives• Went about 30 miles per hour, which was groundbreaking for its time
Bessemer Process and Steel • Prior to the Industrial Revolution, steel was difficult to produce and
expensive• Henry Bessemer developed the Bessemer Process in 1856 which
made making steel easier and cheaper• Using the Bessemer process, factories increased their production of
locomotives and railroad tracks

Airplane• Invented by Orville and Wilbur Wright in 1903• Enabled travel between continents that previously had to be achieved
by ships• Enabled more people to travel to more places than ever before
Advances in Communication
Telegraph
• Invented by Samuel Morse in 1837• Sent long and short pulses of electricity along a wire• Morse Code
• It took only seconds to communicate with another city• Brought people closer together
Telephone
• Invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876• Allowed for instantaneous communication between individuals
Science and Technology

• Invented by Elias Howe in 1844• Revolutionized the way clothes were made• Ready-made clothing industry took off
Lightbulb
• Invented by Thomas Edison in 1879• Made oil lamps obsolete• Enabled lighting at night in homes, streets, and public areas
Pasteurization
• Created by Louis Pasteur in 1870• Process of heating liquids and food to high temperatures to kill
bacteria and germs• Helped eliminate disease
Anesthetic
• Invented by Crawford W. Long in 1842• Reduces pain and makes the patient unconscious during surgery
Turn and Talk
•Which invention do you think is the most significant and why?
Invention Project***See Handout for Instructions and Rubric
Invention Project • You and/or your group will research an invention from the industrial revolution and
create an advertisement poster for it.
• You can do this individually or with a partner. No more than THREE people working together.
• Three Parts:• Research • Creation of the Poster • Presentation
***You have today and next class period to finish the project******Remember Projects are always a TEST GRADE***
Before the end of class…
•Tell Mrs. Scott the following:•The invention you are researching• If you are working individually or in a group•The names of the people in your group
