Bellringer

• Think of at least 3 different species of plants or animals and explain an adaptation that they have acquired to live in their particular environment.

Extreme Adaptations

Page 3: Bellringer

Adaptations

• An adaptation is something about a species that makes it possible for it to live in a particular place in a particular way.– Physical adaptation– Behavioral adaptation

• Adaptations occur relative to a species environment.

The Giant Corpse Flower

• Amorphophallus titanum• Found in the tropical forests of Sumatra in

Indonesia• Flower reaches heights of 6 feet• Plant reaches heights of up

to 20 feet• Smells like rotten eggs• Attracts flies and beetles for

pollination

Page 5: Bellringer

Pangolin

• Mammal – found in tropical regions of Africa and Asia

• Behavioral adaptation - No teeth therefore they swallow small stones and sand to help with digestion

• Long sticky tongueup to 16 inches

• Scales made of keratin

Page 6: Bellringer

Arctic Fox

• How has the arctic fox adapted to the Arctic?– compact body with short legs, short ears, dense

fur, and thickly haired foot pads, which insulate against the cold and provide traction on ice

Adaptations of a desert Cactus

• Succulent, water-retaining stems• thick, waxy cuticle and few or no leaves to greatly

reduce the losses of water• stems are photosynthetic, so leaves are not

required to execute this function• a physiological tolerance of long periods of

drought• periodic pattern of growth, productivity, and

flowering, which takes advantage of the availability of moisture during the brief, rainy season

Planet People

• All planets have different living conditions, or different environments.

• Assume people were sent to one of these planets and must adapt to these very different living conditions.

Page 9: Bellringer

Directions

• Each group will be given a planet to create their fantasy environment.

• Each group must create a poster that should include all of the information on your direction sheets.

• You will have the rest of today’s class and Wednesday to complete this project.

Rubric for Grading• Total of 50 points possible for this poster• 45 – 50 covers all of the bulleted points, explains

adaptations clearly and are creative with their material, neat and organized

• 35 – 44 covers most of the bulleted points, explains adaptations clearly and are creative with their material, neat and organized

• 25 – 34 covers over half of the asked for material and everything is explained clearly and organized

• Less than 25 – doesn’t cover half of the material and/or not neat or clearly conveyed
