Roadmap: Starting PointOriginal demand: Collaboration

Page 10: Bellevue School District A One-to-One Roadmap & The Microsoft Platform ACPE Conference: 5/7/2014 1

10

• Project-based learning, with a focus on college and career readiness, collaboration, and real-world skills.

• Collaboration – kids simultaneously working from home on the same project

• Google Apps

• Forums – kids can reply to a prompt in class & post to forum; teacher can review quickly, kids can review as a class

• Learning Management System: Moodle

Big Picture School - Request

Big Question? (Summer 2011)

Why Office 365 vs Google

• With google, when we tested trying to export to .doc or pdf, formatting always seemed to get lost.

• Office 365 integration with Office 2010 was near seamless

Capability

• Google integration didn’t work well

• Google had problems with room reservations (which we want to move to into our calendaring program)

Calendaring

• Existing SharePoint knowledge made transition to O365 cloud environment easier for staff

Training

• The infrastructure team was/is familiar with the Office backend products; SharePoint and Exchange

• Staff and students were already efficient with Office

Support/Adoption

Page 12: Bellevue School District A One-to-One Roadmap & The Microsoft Platform ACPE Conference: 5/7/2014 1

12

• School had only two grades: 6th and 9th • One-to-one laptops, on campus only. (Lenovo x120)• Office 365: Beta• Global Scholar’s Instruction; later switched to Edmodo• Learnings:

• Devices that don’t move with students eat-up instructional time

• Teachers needed scheduled Professional Development time and opportunity to collaborate with each other to shift pedagogy.

• Problem-base learning• Focus on collaboration and ePortfolios• Desire to use ebooks• Learn about device management• Have teachers explore device use in the classroom• Provide equity

Pilot Expansion: Sammamish(2013-14)

Page 16: Bellevue School District A One-to-One Roadmap & The Microsoft Platform ACPE Conference: 5/7/2014 1

16

• Dedicated/take home devices for students• Curriculum department taking an active roll in

project• Student input for selecting devices

Changes for Sammamish Pilot

Page 17: Bellevue School District A One-to-One Roadmap & The Microsoft Platform ACPE Conference: 5/7/2014 1

17

• Dell 3330 had hard drive firmware related issues• Office365 authentication (OneDrive Sync)• Computer bags were bulky• Students sharing files with teachers was

cumbersome. Teachers struggle to track all the different student documents.

“…allows students to take better notes, interact more with the lesson, have a permanent and easily accessed storage place for notes (this really works well when you take notes in math classes with the stylus and OneNote), and it is a tool that allows for quicker, more efficient, and less wasteful ways to complete assignments, research, and do projects/reports” ~ Jaap

What are the top reasons students should have their own computer in the classroom?

Page 27: Bellevue School District A One-to-One Roadmap & The Microsoft Platform ACPE Conference: 5/7/2014 1

27

“I prefer windows 8 because it is a lot more navigable compared to Windows 7 and there is also an app hub that makes it easy to find the programs you want.” ~ Declan

“This is because windows 8 allows more opportunity for each student to learn to their full potential. ” ~ Nicole

Do you prefer Windows 7 or Windows 8.  If Windows 8, what makes it better?

“The devices give students a sort of independence but with files that can be shared, viewed, or worked on by the entire class, it is still a very connected learning environment.” ~ Arlee

“These devices help me take notes in class quicker and they help make my notes cleaner along with more accessible.” ~ Sophia

How do the devices help you be more productive in class?

Deployment with SCCM

• All devices use UEFI by default (Venue and Lenovo had options)• Changed Task Sequences for UEFI partitions• Changed PXE boot environment to IP Helpers from DHCP Options• Venue and Surface had one USB port so USB hub is required if booting off of USB

Key• Import USB Ethernet adapter drivers

• First had to choose a good USB Ethernet adapter• After Imaging with USB Ethernet 2nd device shows up as previous imaged

device(MAC Address)• We had to create some separate group policies for the Windows 8.1 devices and

apply WMI filters.• IE 10/11 require proxies to be set different with Group Policy preferences
