Bell Ringer [3 Minutes]1. State the 3 points of the Cell Theory
2. Identify ONE difference between a Prokaryotic cell and a Eukaryotic cell
MYP Biology: Cell Organelles
What are the parts of Eukaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells contain specialized structures called Organelles, which each perform a specific function within the cell.
Organelles in ALL Eukaryotic cells
• Nucleus:– Control center of cell, where DNA is stored
Organelles in ALL Eukaryotic cells• Ribosomes:– Make proteins
Organelles in ALL Eukaryotic cells
• Mitochondria:– Produces energy the cell can use
Organelles in ALL Eukaryotic cells
• Endoplasmic Reticulum:– Transports molecules around cell
Organelles in ALL Eukaryotic cells
• Golgi Apparatus– Packages proteins into vesicles (tiny sacs)
Organelles only in Eukaryotic Animal cells
• Lysosome– Digests old cell parts with enzymes and acid
Organelles only in Eukaryotic Plant cells
• Cell Wall– Rigid outer layer that provides structure/ support
Organelles only in Eukaryotic Plant cells
• Chloroplast– Uses light energy to produce food (sugar) for
plant cells [Photosynthesis]
Organelles only in Eukaryotic Plant cells
• Central Vacuole– Large sac that stores water and food
Animal or Plant Cell?
Animal or Plant Cell?
Cells demonstrate Emergent Properties
• An Emergent Property is a property that ‘emerges’ or results from many smaller parts working together as part of a larger system
