25,000 years of colonizingThe Polynesians continued to colonize the pacific

islands for 25,000 years in the following order:New Guinea Fiji Samoa Tahiti Easter

island and finally the Hawaiian Islands 500 years ago.

Reflection (answer on left side of journal):

Why do you think it took so long for Hawaii to be colonized? What had to be done so it could be colonized?

How do you think the Polynesians accomplished colonizing all of these islands?

How did they do it?

The Polynesians did not have any tools or compasses to help them.

The Polynesians were water people. Their lives revolved around the water so they paid close attention to it.

They watched the changing directions of the waves and how they moved the boats.

The Polynesians were the first ones to read the stars

Stick MapsThe Polynesians made the first ocean maps

called stick charts which were made of bamboo tied together, knots or shells representing islands and curved pieces of wood showing waves moving around islands.

Activity: Making you own Stick Maps

As a table you will make a stick map of the school that shows the important parts of the school as islands. You will then pretend that there is water moving around these “islands” by showing how the water moves around them.

Key: Knots show islandsBent pieces of wood show waves bending

Use the sticks to hold your map together
