WOMAN HATERS

Home Mortgage Relief Flops!

GOB tells mortgagors they must pay

December interest on their own

Belize City, December 9, 2014The Barrow Administration seri-

ously can’t get anything right, as the Prime Minister has admitted himself before a meeting with private sector representatives. The UDP Govern-ment has back-pedalled on one of their political gimmicks announced in September - the home mortgage relief program – in which they prom-ised to meet the December interest payment for over 7,400 mortgagors with mortgage loans up to $100,000.

The Government announced this week that they will no longer be making the December payment to the financial institutions, as indicat-ed before, but will instead reimburse those who can pay.

This has caused panic for many families, who following the news in September, began budgeting their Christmas expenses based on the UDP Government’s promised assis-tance. With the Government return-ing the burden on mortgagors, they have now been forced to scramble and find a way to pay their loans with the interest or find themselves being left out of the programme complete-ly.

The Government has offered no reason for the sudden changes, but sources at the Ministry of Finance have indicated that the expectation is that not everyone will be able to pay meet their loan obligations; therefore, the Government’s burden to meet reimbursements will be less than the projected $3 million.

The gimmick was really just a part of the UDP’s September celebrations “hype”, which the PM uses to fan his political ego during the national cele-brations month.

The mortgage relief program un-veiled in September is not the only one that has failed to launch. The promise that all Belizeans would see their internet speeds double has also flopped. Government-owned tele-coms company, BTL, has had to apol-ogize to its customers and inform them that the PM’s promise will not come through.

Sedi says Belizeans are “Very Rusty”

Belize City, December 3, 2014Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington has

offended Belizeans many, many times before. Belizeans could re-call his calling of our Border with Guatemala “Artificial”. Cayo resi-dents remember the UDP rep-resentative for Pickstock telling them that crime in their locality is nothing alarming when compared

to his Belize City area and that they need to stop looking to the Government for solutions. Most recently, Sedi dissed the country by saying that we shouldn’t ques-tion a “gift” by the United States, even it means compromising our security to Guatemalans.

When Sedi speaks, he seems to just shove his feet right into his mouth. This disease seems to have no bounds on his propensity to attack and be negative, and his most recent presentation before a group of young people was no different.

Last week Sedi was speaking at a forum hosted by the Taiwan

Embassy to discuss employment opportunities in Belize, but instead of giving hope, Sedi killed the vibe as he went on a diatribe in which he painted a gutter image of Belize and Belizeans.

Sedi said that he views Belize as “a garden that is overgrown with weeds”. As if preparing the students for even worse, he said “I will tell you the realities of Belize and then I will leave”.

He really should have left, but he kept on going on his assault on Belize.

“We are not more than 360,000 people so we are very few in numbers. We are undevel-oped, uneducated, unskilled, to a large extent unemployed and very rusty. Not the type of pop-ulation that readily attracts in-vestment,” he told the students.

Sedi then lashed out at his

own UDP Government’s record in office. He said the social fabric of our country - healthy families – was at its weakest. He pointed out that too many mothers are “fathering children”, even though the majority are “uneducated, unskilled and unemployed and there is no real safety net to help them to get through life so that it is really and truly a real struggle for the mothers of most of our children to get through life”.

Sedi appeared to know every-thing that is going wrong with Be-lize but not a single idea about how his Government would reverse the situation, even after seven years in office. If these are not signs of a man who ought to be sentenced to political retirement, we don’t know what else will. The Doc in Pick-stock, Francis Smith, has the cure for this Sedi virus in Belize.

CAYO NORTH BY-ELECTION

on the

On January 5th, 2015 the voters of Cayo North will go to the polls to elect a new Area Representative following the sudden and intriguing resignation of Jo-seph Mahmud.

As they do so, they must be mindful of a few import-ant facts:

1. The PETROCARI-BE MONEYTRAIN that has rolled into town and will be there for the next 30 days will be GONE after January 5th, 2015. If the UDP cared about the people of Cayo North they would have been helping you, your families and your community since

2008. From 2008 to 2012 under a UDP representa-tive, Cayo North was ig-nored. From 2008 to 2012 under a PUP Representa-tive, Cayo North was pun-ished. Now that a By-Elec-tion is imminent the UDP remembers Cayo North. Do not be fooled!

2. Remember that af-ter the UDP PENNER IM-MIGRATION SCANDAL Mr. Barrow, faced with the prospect of a By-Elec-tion in Cayo Northeast, rode into that division on his proverbial red horse proclaiming that he had millions and millions to

spend in Cayo North East. When the pros-pect of the By-Election dimmed, we heard no more from Barrow or the UDP and the good people of Cayo North East have not seen him since. More than 18 months have passed and nothing has hap-pened in Cayo North East. Political opportun-ism and hypocrisy at its best!

3. A vote for the UDP in Cayo North is a vote for ELVIN PEN-NER, it is a vote to con-tinue the cover up and

protection of a man who sold our national identity to a criminal in a jail in Taiwan, a man who dis-graced Belize and the people of Cayo whom he still represents in the National Assembly of Be-lize.

4. A vote for the UDP in Cayo North is a vote for Barrow and his wasteful, incompetent, and corrupt Government. This By-Election affords the people of Cayo North an opportunity to say loudly and clearly to this UDP government, Enough is Enough! Stop the waste! Stop the hustling! Stop the corrup-tion! Omar Figueroa will simply join a sinking ship and do noth-ing to change and reform the corrupt UDP Government.

5. The PUP candidate Rich-ard Harrison joins a PUP Team committed to Social Justice and to Economic, Governance, Ed-ucation and Health Reform. A vote for the PUP in Cayo North is a vote for a better future for you, your families, and your community.

Barrow, Belize’s Biggest Hypocrite

05

EDITORIAL

Dean Barrow is, pound for pound, Be-lize’s biggest hypocrite. He is the biggest hypocrite politically. He is the biggest hypocrite personally. He stands out over and alone all others on the issue of hypocrisy.

As an elected area representative for Queen’s Square he offers no representation to the constituency. There is no office anywhere in the division where residents can access their representative, no matter how urgent or life threat-ening their situation.

For the past six years Mr. Barrow has nine plycem houses to show for his area. Some are jammed up two in one yard.

His voters’ list is a classic example of political corruption and dishonesty in electoral fraud – empty lots are listed as residential homes for his supporters.

Belize’s most dangerous and well-organised gang, ac-cording to recently leaked secret Police files, was born and nurtured on George Street under Mr. Barrow’s watch. Their names crowd his voters list and as little children they grew up in his area deprived of all the basic things children need to become wholesome adults. Mr. Barrow has provided no pre-school, no park, no playground, no basketball court, no football field, no evening class or skills training, no sus-tainable job program. All these innocent little children had no future to look forward to but despair, drugs or death. Their poor parents were bought out cheap come elections and then shoved aside for another five years.

Mr. Barrow has been in Queen’s Square from 1984 and has nothing to show for it; except a legacy of poverty and hand-outs and a shyster’s ability to manipulate poor people.

Indeed, the callousness of his hypocrisy seems to have hardened as he grows older and faces his own mortality. He was a former Deputy Prime Minister and for the past six years the Prime Minister. All six constituencies on the Southside of Belize City are “represented” by UDP Minis-ters. The area and its people are in the worst condition it has ever been in all its history. This is a stinging indictment or Mr. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of a disintegrating society.

His years of personal experience in using and abusing public funds have convinced him to become more cynical as his political days come to a close. His whole philosophy has now become one of using public funds to buy the growing army of poor people whom he has cultivated.

And he dares talk of hypocrisy.A whopping forty-three percent of our population are

living in poverty. Explained another way, one out of every two persons is deep in poverty. For the past six years of his Prime Ministership, Mr. Barrow has uttered not a word

on this shameful aspect of his leadership or lack thereof. Worse than his shameful silence is the total absence of any policy to address the situation.

There is no project, no programme, with targeted goals to roll back, scale down, or reduce this terrible human tragedy. On the contrary, Mr. Hypocrite has instead put in place a dependency political programme. He is giving away small amounts of groceries to political supporters. It is not to help the poor. It is solely to bribe voters.

Just how low does he go?Unassailable studies and damning statistics show that

our education system is in crisis. Thousands of our young people are condemned to growing up without complet-ing primary school and never seeing the inside of a high school or sixth form. Yet Mr. Barrow has done absolutely nothing to improve much less correct the situation.

The health services are in the unhealthiest conditions they can ever be. They are a target for dishonest Ministers and handpicked bureaucrats, who plunder monies which should go for quality medication and needed equipment. Still the Prime Minister looks the other way.

Talk of hypocrisy. Two weeks ago a survey of the prisons by British

human rights attorneys unearthed large numbers of mentally ill Belizeans hidden behind jail cells rather than in hospitals. This Russian Gulag-style of treatment exemplifies the type of Government presided over by the Prime Minister.

Not only are there hundreds of innocent citizens thrown in jail awaiting trial for relatively minor offences, but the Prime Minister lied to the nation that he would amend one of his brutal and unjust gun laws to be more fair to whole families of innocent persons. He did no such thing. What a hypocrite.

An editorial is not the most convenient of places to discuss Mr. Barrow’s legendary hypocrisy, his megalo-mania or rampant nepotism. There is not enough space to cover the volumes of examples.

Here is a man who has no use for sports or athletes. The artists and entertainers overflowing with talents are of no interest to him. His focused interest appears to be to enrich his family members. Always for the poor? Since when does rising millionaires qualify as poor people? And since when does a handful of concrete streets and white elephant buildings substitute for building families and providing jobs and creating a future for our country.

Talk of hypocrite.Next time you consult your mirror, you need to take

a long hard look at who you really are and what kind of monster you have become.

Belize City, December 10, 2014The Barrow Administration’s Pet-

ro-Caribe Party of illegal spending, wastefulness, and political gimmicks is in serious danger! This week the Ven-ezuelan Government informed Prime Minister Dean Barrow that as of Febru-ary 2015, they will discontinue provid-ing Premium gasoline under the ALBA/Petrocaribe agreement. This is in line with current steps being taken by the Venezuelan Government to re-adjust its priorities as the program faces diffi-cult market conditions that threaten its continuation. These steps have affected countries benefitting from Venezuela hand-outs across the region.

The biggest threat to Petro-Caribe is the world market price for fuel which has been stumbling down for several months, from about US$115 per barrel in June to about US$45 today. Venezu-ela’s program was geared to provide cheap fuel at a time when crude oil prices are high enough for them to reap benefits, even if only long term. With lower oil prices, the program has had to undergo re-adjustment. First came the decision that the interest on pay-ments would be doubled, followed by varying adjustments depending on the agreements with the countries such as the case in Jamaica where the amount forthwith increased from 40% to 50%, and to Belize where the supply of pre-mium gas over the next two months will be the last. It will reportedly get worse.

While the Petro-Caribe program is clearly in trouble, the inebriated UDP Government’s partying with the millions of dollars made available to Belize for fighting poverty continues. The reckless spending continues as the UDP contin-ues the heaving feeding of cronies who are awarded lucrative contracts for pub-lic infrastructure works that fail any form of transparency test miserably. The con-tracts are not advertised to attract the most qualified contractors and neither is the work inspected thoroughly to en-sure value for money.

All the UDP keeps on saying is… “Petro-Caribe…Roll it”, without a care about the financial or economic implica-tions to our country.

Prime Minister Barrow, who is the Minister of Finance although he is not an economist, appeared unflustered

about the Petro-Caribe crisis when he addressed the media this week. He said that if the program ends, Belize will just have to “roll with the punches”, meaning we will have to “take the licks” as they come.

According to Barrow, “it has been a lovely run”, as his Government has been able to access over $230 million in easy money since 2012. But he made no com-ment on how the repayment portion of the programme would be handled if and when the program crashes and Belize has to turn to the global market for fuel.

Early indications are that Venezuela is not prepared to hold on to the debts of the countries currently benefitting from the Petro-Caribe deal. Venezuela has sold about $28 billion worth of oil to Caribbe-an and Central American countries under the PetroCaribe program since 2005.

Under the agreement, a portion of the money is paid upfront and the rest

in cash or with agriculture food products over a number of years. But this is not how Petro-Caribe’s reported new busi-ness partner, Wall Street, does business. Reports are that Venezuela has turned to corporate Wall Street to relieve some of the debt pain.

Venezuela is said to be negotiating with Wall Street investors to purchase bonds that would end up raising cash for Dominican Republic to pay its $4 billion debt. The Dominican Republic is the larg-est fuel recipient under Petro-Caribe.

The question which Prime Minister Barrow is not answering is: how much of the $230 million Petro-Caribe monies have been squandered and how much have been set aside for the incoming looming darker times? Sources say that the UDP Partying has been too “lovely” and reckless that the Prime Minister is beginning to suddenly hear the voices of IMF economists in his head.

UDP Cock

Fight!!Belize City, December 10, 2014

It is difficult to say which is larg-er, the self-inflated drama-queen ego of Mayor Darrel Bradley or the authoritarian style and mentality of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, but both are clashing inside the UDP.

On the one hand, Barrow is running the UDP (his party) just as his minions in Cabinet have made him become accustomed to. What he says goes, and it’s his way or the highway. No one can challenge the King. And on the other hand, there is Darrel Bradley, a virtually inexperienced politician who won an election on the coat-tails of a Central Government. Bradley was gifted an easy term in office with the promise than anything he asks for he will get. Bradley, apparently, has mis-valued his political capital to the UDP and has begun to raise the stakes for himself, but lately he hasn’t been getting everything he has asked for.

Reports to the BELIZE TIMES are that Bradley has been feeling like a less important politician in the UDP recently. Central Govern-ment turned down the request to back-up a loan which the Coun-cil was seeking to renovate the Commercial Center. Then Brad-ley was made to look like a wimp when he was forced to divert his political interest from Caribbean Shores back to City Hall. Recently, the hundred-thousand plus dollars in Christmas Cheer programme skipped him against his hopes for major support. And then, while be-ing courted to run once more for Mayor, he feels that the Prime Min-ister is imposing his will against his with the well-publicised mandate that he must hire all 170 sanitation workers who will no longer have jobs as of January 19th as a result of the Mayor and Council’s to ter-minate their contract with Belize Maintenance Limited.

Bradley stood next to the Prime Minister and did not challenge the Barrow’s mandate given back in Au-gust. But today things are different. Bradley has been having sleepless nights and restless thoughts about the entire situation. It has even forced him re-consider whether to run for Mayor in the upcoming Be-lize City municipal elections.

According to the Mayor, adding the 170 workers would increase the Council’s staff by 35% and any “idiot” should see that it would not be sustainable. This attack seemed to targeted at the Prime Minister.

The Mayor added that in ad-dition to the discomfort caused by the Prime Minister’s mandate, political advisers in the UDP have

suggested that he should hire the workers but immediately fire them after the March 4th 2015 elections.

While the UDP has done their utmost best to make this squabble between the PM and the Mayor ap-pear to be a small matter, the truth is that Prime Minister Barrow and Darrel Bradley are engaged in a nasty behind-the-scenes cock fight that could spell serious trouble for the UDP.

The PM however, is not letting Bradley have his way. With high confidence, perhaps misguided, when was asked if Bradley will run for the UDP as Mayor Candidate this week, he responded, “I am pretty sure, yes”. It will be interest-ing to see who will win this fight? Drama queen Bradley? Or will King Dean continue to have his way? We will be watching.

Aurelio Martinez

Parandero Aurelio Martinez will launch his new album, ‘Lándini’ in Be-lize with a special concert at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts on Fri-day December 12th.

Lándini is a swaying, bittersweet homage to his beloved home and people. In original songs crafted with his mother Maria, as well as traditional tunes, Aurelio mixes upbeat, Garifuna rhythms with heartfelt melodies and sparkling instrumentation, and carries forth the torch for Central America’s indigenous Garifuna tradition.

The songs on Lándini are about Aurelio, his feelings, his family, and Garifuna life in general. In recording Lándini, Belizean producer Ivan Du-ran, who has dedicated most of his professional life to working with Gari-funa artists, strove to accentuate the songs’ intimate nature. Duran’s touch-es are restrained and subtle, leaving the spotlight on Aurelio and his band’s passionate performances.

Recorded and mixed at Stonetree Studios in Benque Viejo by Al Ovando and Ivan Duran, the new album fea-tures the same musicians and team he’s worked with for almost 15 years.

Lándini was released internation-ally in September by Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records and has received rave reviews from important music publications around the world. In Oc-tober, Lándini reached the coveted #1 spot on the World Music Charts Europe and has been voted as one of the top ten World Music albums of 2014 by a handful of publications, in-cluding Songlines Magazine, The Sun-day Times (UK), Afropop Worldwide (US) and fRoots Magazine.

“Boots” Martinez Under Fire for

Inadequate Housing in Port Loyola

PUP Belmopan prepares for victory

Belize City, December 4, 2014On Wednesday December 3,

2014 over a hundred residents of the division participated in a demonstra-tion in Port Loyola, marching along with People’s United Party Port Loyola Standard Bearer Gilroy Usher Sr. and demanding proper housing for the residents.

As they marched through many of the neglected streets in the area and viewed the terrible housing situation in which many them or their relatives have been forced to live, the people carried placards which stated among other things: No More Inadequate Housing for the People, We Deserve Proper Housing and We need Jobs to get out of inadequate housing and poverty.

The demonstration was triggered by almost seven years of frustration with government’s failure to address the basic need of the people for prop-er housing. The people wanted to make it clear that they are tired of the neglect at the hands of UDP area rep-resentative Boots Martinez. They also indicated that they would no longer suffer quietly in inadequate housing across the division.

Today many residents of Port Loyola live in inadequate housing not because the country does not have the funds to address their concern, but because of massive corruption in the Ministry of Housing and Govern-ment’s unconcern about the welfare of the Belizean people. Today despite a billion dollar budget there is abso-lutely no program to build proper low

income houses for Belizeans, who need such assistance.

“If taxpayers’ money is good to build over a dozen large, yel-low, concrete houses all over Belize City for Boots, taxpayers’ money is also good to build prop-er low income houses for the res-idents of Port Loyola who deserve such assistance,” PUP Standard Bearer Gilroy Usher Sr. told the en-thusiastic demonstrators.

In a show of disdain for the wel-fare of the people of the division, a few of families have been given tiny, poorly built plycem houses in which they can barely turn and which has roofing that whenever it rains. And to add insult to injury, such houses usually don’t have proper electrical wiring, ceiling, or plumbing for toilet

facilities. In 2014, victims of the heartless Boots Martinez have no choice but to use the nearby bushes as toilets, which is a serious health hazard.

As the next Area Representative for Port Loyola, Usher said that the people of the area have his assurance that proper houses will be built for those who are most in need for such.

The demonstration for proper hous-ing for the residents of Port Loyola ended in a yard on Central American Blvd be-tween Southside Butane Gas and Belize Drug Store where Boots Martinez has neglected the cry of over a dozen families for proper housing assistance for almost fifteen years.

Chiquibul

Illegal Guatemalans caught panning for gold inside the Chiquibul forest

Reid

By G. Michael ReidClientelism is defined as “the

exchange of goods and services for political support”. It is tantamount to vote-buying which is illegal and considered highly corrupt. The un-fortunate thing about clientelism is that it is in effect, citizens being giv-en a handout from money that is in fact, theirs to begin with. What most don’t seem to understand is that for every dollar that politicians give out, they keep anywhere from nine to ninety-nine per cent for themselves. It seems however, that most folks are so happy to receive that one dollar that they are willing to ignore or even endorse the outright theft of their tax dollars by these greedy politicians.

The practice of giving handouts to citizens has become a tradition under this current administration and while it is indubitably wrong-headed, many would be more in-clined to tolerate it if there was any degree of equity in its discharge. At last report, the number of Belizeans at or below the poverty level has in-creased to an alarming 45 percent under this administration. That sta-tistic then, provided by credible in-ternational experts, would suggest that just about one out of every two citizens of Belize can be considered poor. While the Prime Minister and his ministers constantly beat their chests and never pass up the op-portunity to brag and boast about their purported pro-poor agenda, ev-idence on the ground suggest that the only ones benefitting are the UDP politicians themselves; they of course, and their close circles of families and cronies.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow had a good laugh when it was point-ed out to him by his party’s chief protagonist that the PUP would be accepting the watered down ver-sion of the Christmas Cheer. This was apparently one of those “set up” questions designed to make the PUP look ridiculous for partaking in this program of “high clientelism”.

Programs like the Christmas Cheer, and Mother’s Day Cheer before it, tar-gets specifically party supporters and not necessarily needy families. For the Mothers’ Day program, no Oppo-sition representative received a dime. For the Christmas Cheer program, UDP representatives are given a hun-dred and ten thousand ($110,000) to hand out while the PUP representa-tives get a third of that or thirty-five thousand ($35,000). In fact, unelected UDP standard bearers and caretakers themselves get much more than the elected PUP representatives in an ef-fort to buy voters over to their side. The saddest part is that while this money is disbursed in such a blatantly biased and partisan manner, when it comes to the paying it back, the re-sponsibility will fall on the shoulders of all Belizeans; in particular those who are being given the least.

The money of course, comes courtesy the Petro Caribe fund. Pet-ro Caribe is a loan that now looks like it will have to be repaid a lot sooner than was expected and at a much higher interest rate. As it stands, the free ride seems to be fast coming to an end as it was announced just this week that Venezuela has begun to cut back. The Prime Minister confirmed in an interview on Monday that “wheth-er now or by the end of the year” the end will begin as Venezuela will no longer be sending Premium gasoline. One would think that he of all persons would know when. International news agencies are reporting that it won’t be too long before the Petro Caribe pro-gram will be discontinued and phased out altogether.

Now the issue of PUP accepting the Christmas Cheer money is a tricky one but the rationale is not difficult to understand. First of all, it is not like this is UDP’s money and it is not

have to pay back this loan, it is unfair that only UDP’s should get assistance from any programs that spinoff. The government will spend the money anyway and with the way our system is structured, the Opposition can ob-ject and speak out but very little else.

Christmas Jeer!!

Dean Barrow has included the PUP’s in this program for two rea-sons; none of them being noble. One, he wants to be able to stand in the House and say that he gave them something. Secondly, he wants to put them in a no win situation. If the PUP does not accept the offer, then they stand the risk of being accused by the people in their constituencies of not trying to help them. If they accept the offer, then Barrow can do as he is do-ing and label them hypocritical. It is sneaky politics at its worse and only a devious mind like Dean Barrow’s could have come up with such a low-ly trick.

The UDP’s have enjoyed quite a ride with the Petro Caribe money. We now know that it is the same money that was able to buy the last general elections in 2012. It was the same money that Elvin Penner was able to use to sponsor the fast track-ing of thousands of immigrants in or-der that they might vote. It was the same money that Dean Barrow was willing to spend to prevent a recall in Cayo Northeast and it is the same money that is being spent in an at-

tempt to buy the upcoming bi-elec-tion in Cayo North.

Dean Barrow was hoping that this free ride was going to last for-ever. Now that he sees the end in sight you can be sure he will quickly call an election and ride off with his ill gotten gains. What the Belizean people should be focused on is not whether the PUP will accept the pittance but rather, whether or not a proper accounting can be done for all this money that has been squandered. The Petro Caribe loan will make the Superbond look like a pawnshop transaction and with the many other loans entered into by this government, Belizeans will be saddled with extreme hardship for generations to come.

Belize is sitting on the verge of a major crisis. As I write this ar-ticle, we are awaiting a decision from the CCJ on the BTL and BEL illegal acquisition. The cane indus-try is in dire straits and sits a tinder box of violence just a small spark short of erupting. Tourism just re-ceived a black eye when Belize was declared the third most boring destination to visit. With the Petro Caribe ride now coming to an end, Belizeans can well heed the advice of the old folks, “Soak your beard and band your belly” for there’s a serious storm a brewing. Heaven help us all!

like it is going to go directly to these representatives. In fact, as has been explained, they are not even given money so no way is there any wiggle room to divert cash. As the Leader of the Opposition explained, it is the only area of this reckless spending that offers any degree of accountability. It would be unfair to the poor people of the constituencies represented by the PUP for their representatives to refuse this “gift horse” as it was. It is bad enough that PUP’s in the areas that are controlled by the UDP will be left out but the least that the PUP can do is to ensure that as many needy families as possible get assistance in the areas where they can.

To suggest that the PUP should not partake in this program is tanta-mount to suggesting that those un-employed young men on the street should not accept jobs with the in-frastructure project. When this ride is over, it is over, and since we will all

Was murder suspect possessed by demons?

Corozal Town, December 10, 2014Corozal Police have charged 22 year

old Carlos Cassanova for the brutal chop-ping murder of 29 year old Mark Mas-sam Jr. that occurred on College Road, Corozal Town, on the night of Wednesday December 9th.

Cassanova and Massam are neigh-bors, but on Wednesday night they turned on each other after an argument turned deadly. Cassanova, it is reported, used a machete to viciously attack Massam.

When the Police arrived at the scene about 9:15pm, they saw Cassanova standing over Massam, swinging his ma-chete with brutal force. The officers told Cassanova to stop. But he continued. They then pulled their weapons and fired warning shots in the air, but that did not stop the attack. Police said they felt they had no choice but to disable Cassanova by shooting at his feet, in order to stop the attack and subdue him.

Massam sustained massive injuries to his head, neck and body. His fingers were cut off. He died while undergoing treatment at the Corozal Community hos-pital an hour later.

Cassanova is currently under Police guard at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hos-pital. He will likely be charged with mur-der as soon as he is released.

The entire community is shocked at the brutality of the incident. Neighbors and those who know both men are fright-ened to see what occurred and they have been left wondering what could have trig-gered such anger.

Cassanova’s father, Carlos Sr., said he knows his son’s mind has not been right lately. He said he believes his son was possessed by demons or evil spirits, and that led to him doing what he did.

In November, Carlos Jr. went missing for several days. He was found in an area in the Cayo District dressed in only loin cloth around his waist. He was also found riding a horse, reportedly on his way to Guatemala. People who tried convincing him to go home, said he told them that there were demons in Corozal that want-ed to kill him.

“I tell my son, ‘let’s go home’. He

said ‘no’, he got demons and some man who wants to kill him in Corozal. ‘I don’t want to go home’, he said. Then I asked why? I want you to explain who want to kill you in Corozal, he said I can’t tell you that, you are not my father. That’s when I get conscious that he’s not in his correct from the mind,” said Carlos Sr.

At one point the family request-ed that the Police help them take Carlos Jr. to a proper facility for treat-ment. Carlos Sr. said that the officers

who responded ended up dismissing the family’s request. The officers reportedly did their own evaluation and came to the conclusion that nothing was wrong with Carlos Jr.

While he is concerned about his son, he is also afraid that the incident will feed sentiments of vengeance into his neigh-bors. Carlos Sr. said he has been receiving death threats.

The victim of the murder, Massam, leaves behind two daughters, including an 8 year old and a baby only a few month’s old.
