Resident ConductorPossessing extraordinary stage charisma and ease of connection with audiences, an intuitive and instinctive understanding and passion for music, and having broad-scope experience directing ensembles of all genres and levels, Michael J. Garasi is one of the most engaging, and exciting professional conductors of our day.

Mr. Garasi is the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the professional, Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra in Central Florida.

Acclaimed as one of the most formidable and reputable conductors in the world of Brass Bands, Mr. Garasi is known for his dynamic presence and leadership, both in preparation and performance. Charismatic, trend-setting, progressive and creative, Mr. Garasi was the musical director of the Brass Band of Central Florida for nine years, leading them to win both major titles in US brass banding, two tours to England, recording four albums and leading the ensemble to a new level of national and international prominence. Mr. Garasi became the first American brass band conductor ever to be nominated by England’s 4 Bars Rest.com for the “Newcomer of the Year” Award in 2004 and the “Conductor of the Year” award in 2006. Mr. Garasi also won the “Best New Arrangement” Award in the U.S. Open Brass Band Championships in 2004 and 2005. In 2007, Mr. Garasi became the first American conductor to adjudicate at the most prestigious entertainment competition for brass bands in the world, the Brass in Concert Competition at the Sage in Gateshead, England. Because of this international success, Mr. Garasi was invited to England twice to conduct the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band on numerous concerts and at the Brass in Concert Competition in 2008. Still active in the world of Brass Bands, Mr. Garasi was recently invited to adjudicate at the North American Brass Band Championships in 2013, and is presently on the NABBA Board of Directors.

Mr. Garasi studied at the Eastman School of Music and holds a bachelor and master degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music. In addition to his formal degrees, Mr. Garasi has studied advanced conducting with Kenneth Kiesler, Michael Jinbo, and Joseph Kreines.

Mr. Garasi is married to published music and curriculum writer and editor, Cherry T. Garasi. Michael and Cherry reside in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

John R. BeckJohn R. Beck is the principal percussionist of the Winston-Salem Symphony and he teaches at the UNC School of the Arts and Wake Forest University. He regularly performs with the Brass Band of Battle Creek and the Philidor Percussion Group. He holds degrees from Oberlin College and the Eastman School of Music. John has recorded and performed commercial music, played with touring Broadway shows, and can often be heard playing drums with jazz, Dixieland or “Top 40” bands. His career began as a member of the United States Marine Band, and for 10 years he performed regularly with the National and Baltimore Symphonies, Washington and Baltimore Operas, and the Theater Chamber Players of the Kennedy Center. John Beck is an artist for the Zildjian Cymbal Company.

Mark FrostMark started playing tenor trombone at the age of 11. Several years later he successfully auditioned for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain which gave him his first taste of big time brass banding when at the age of 16 he joined the Brighouse & Rastrick Band. Two years later Mark accepted the offer to join the Black Dyke Mills Band where under conductor David King the band won the European Championships twice. In April 2001 Mark was invited over to the USA to become the bass trombonist with the Brass Band of Battle Creek. He accepted after much careful thought (ed.– Hah!!)! This now sees him working alongside some of the most celebrated brass players in the world. Mark also spends his time teaching and has been the bass trombone professor at Salford University for several years.

Steven MeadSteven Mead has served as principal euphonium with the Brass Band of Battle Creek for the last 25 years. His remarkable solo career, which takes him to the four corners of the globe playing over 75 dates per year, followed on from the successes he achieved as a member of several of the UK’s leading brass bands. Nowadays he travels constantly and performs regularly with some of the finest brass, wind and symphonic ensembles in the world. Steven has been an artist and clinician with Besson for many years and has been responsible for the design and development of the Steven Mead series of brass mouthpieces with ‘Denis Wick Products’ and the new Besson Prestige Euphonium, now made in Germany, tested by Steve and distributed by Buffet Crampon.

IT’S ABOUT EDUCATION I CAN

Among Michigan’s community colleges, KCC is consistently ranked as one of the most affordable. A KCC education is available at a fraction of the cost that students pay at state universities. For many dual-enrolled high school students, including those in early college programs, tuition is covered 100 percent by state funding.
