Dearest Lord,Teach me to be generous.

Teach me to serve you as you deserve,To give and not to count the cost,

To fight and not to heed the wounds,To toil and not to seek for rest,

To labor and not to ask for reward,Save that of knowing that I am doing your will.

This year the 2002-2003 Belen Junior Varsity Cheerleadersattended a Top Gun Camp hosted by Víctor Rosario. Individually, cheerleaders perfected their stunting abilities and techniques.During the year, the cheerleaders participated in numerous pep-rallies and games. The team has surpassed all expectations, andis without a doubt, the best Junior Varsity Cheerleading team inBelen’s history.

The 2003-2003 Belen Varsity cheerleaders, likewise, began the year attending a Top GunCamp. Supporting the guys by going to as many games as possible, no matter how far the drive, attending all the pep-rallies, and even decorating the locker room showed our spirit toward Belen. One of our biggest rewards was the bundle of joy that came along with our coach, little KyleRodríguez.

The 2002-2003 season will go down in basketball history books as one of the most exciting ever. TheWolverines played in five overtime games winning four. Two of the overtime games were quadruple overtimewins. The team also renewed an old rivalry with Columbus after a seventeen-year absence. Other notablegames included victories over South Dade, St. Brendan and LaSalle in addition to three hard-fought gamesversus Gulliver Prep. The Varsity Basketball team ended their season with a record of 18 wins and 11 losses.Alejandro Guardiola led the Woverines with 20 points per game including a school record 44-point effortagainst Curley. Anthony Fernández averaged a double for the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds pergame and Alejandro Tellería added 10 points per game as the sixth man. Jean Paul Bermúdez was second onthe team in rebounds, while Gabriel Bermúdez led the team in assists. Anthony Torrente and ChristopherGueits added experience and defense. Ignacio Duquesne, Javier Morejón, Stephen Putman, DanielRodríguez, and Iván Echenique contributed greatly off the bench.

The basketball program learned many things from its Senior players. The commitment, desire andhard work displayed by all of them has shown the underclassmen the way to succeed. This attitude, in con-junction with the underclassmen's natural ability, paints a bright future for basketball at Belen. We would alsolike to thank Vince Fernández for all his help during these past three seasons.

Varsity Crew

For the first time the Novice/Freshmen Crews competed in both the fall and spring rowing seasons. Two sets oftryouts brought the team many gifted athletes. The novices started the season long on enthusiasm, but short on know-how.They quickly picked up the "stroke" and were off to winning races in several regattas. Among the highlights of the Frosh/Novice Crew, was a First place finish at the Miami International Regatta against cross-town rival MRC.The Crew ended theyear, qualifying for the FSRA State Championship, and placing third in the State at the Finals. The team would like to thankCoaches René Revuelta and Alex Salas for their support and dedication.

The Varsity Crew was a young and determined team this year. Only four seniors finished the season, with the bulkof the team made up of sophomores who performed well beyond their expectations. All three boats qualified for the FSRAState Championships giving Belen an entry in every category. The J.V. four placed second in the State Championshipregatta after an incredible final race where they held off Pine Crest in the last second. The Third four did the unthinkable bywinning the State Championship in their category, giving Belen it's first ever Gold medal at this regatta. The Varsity Crewhad the toughest job all season. Every weekend these seniors would face the fastest crews in the State and letting themknow that the Belen Varsity crew was there, was fast, and was ready to race. This year, with three medals at the StateChampionships, the Belen Crew made it clear we were the new rowing power in Florida Scholastic Crew. The team wouldlike to thank Coach Alex Salas for all his hours of hard work and commitment to the team. Thanks also to the Parents Clubfor making the season possible.

Varsity Football

The 2002 Varsity Football team was the best team in Belenfootball history. This fine group of young men won 10 games and lost 2,which included a regular season record of 9-1. This is the first Belenfootball team to win a total of 10 games and the team tied the 1990 teamfor the most regular season wins.

The team accomplished all of this without having a home fieldadvantage. The 12 games were played at 11 different fields, with ourhome games played at Tropical Park, LaSalle, Palmer Trinity, FIU twiceand finally, our Homecoming game at Belen’s new football stadium. Theteam and coaches also overcame the everyday obstacles of commutingwith lots of equipment to practice at Tamiami Park. Team leaders such asChris Gueits, David Caballero, René Veliz, Louis González, René Larrieuand Gabby Fontela and the rest of a very strong Senior class, made surethe team stayed focused and didn’t let the hardships of not having ahome field interfere with the team’s success.

Some of the season highlights include the following:- Shutting out Gulliver 28-0. 1982 was the last time Belen shut Gulliverout.- Belen school record of 56 points in a half against LaSalle.- Blowing out Crescent City 39-6 for the 10th straight Homecomingvictory.- A 53-28 victory over BayPoint after trailing 22-21 at the half.- Being the first Belen team to start a season 8-0.

This Senior class of 2003 was truly amazing. Their 3-year Varsityrecord is an incredible 28 wins and 8 losses. They will not only go downas the best group of Belen football players but as great leaders, hardworkers and good people. Thanks for the memories and best of luck inthe future!

Varsity Volleyball

The 2003 season was the inaugural State Boys Volleyball FHSAA series in Florida. We were reallyexcited about attending our first district tournament. This kept the team focused and motivated throughout theseason. Leading the team was Captain Víctor Ruiz (hitter), and Co-captain Juan Andión (setter). They were theanchors of the team. Helping at the net were seniors Jean Paul Bermúdez (middle hitter), Carlos Wiltz (out-side hitter), and Américo Padilla (blocker), and junior Danny Fernández (outside hitter).Defensive specialists were Tim Halpin and Alex León. Our ace server was Adrián Díaz. The highlight of the season was the tournament at Ransom. The team really cametogether as a unit. They beat rival Greater Miami Academy and Ransom to take 1stPlace. Juan Andión served 13 in a row to win 15-10. This year’s team was a wonderful group of young men. Their attitude towards thegame and each other made a big difference in their performance this year. It was a truepleasure to coach them and see their progress throughout the season. I’d like to wishthe best to the 5 graduating seniors. We will miss you. Also, a special thank you to Mrs.Bermúdez who helped with the score-keeping and the parents and teachers who sup-ported our team.

Varsity Wrestling

The Wrestling team had one tough season. Only losing Head Captain and State Champion David Bouza to gradu-ation, the team looked like it would have another great season, but this year turned out to be bitter-sweet. After severalveterans decided to end their careers early, the team took a big hit, physically and mentally. However, they were not goingto let that stop them from working hard and doing their job. Flooded with first year seniors and junior high veterans theteam began suffering from various injuries. Going into the District Tournament without several key wrestlers, the teammanaged to take several 3rd and 4th place finishes, a 2nd place finish by Steven Rico and Ernie Calderín, and a 1st placeby Jason Machado after being out for 2/3 of the season with a hip injury. Machado went on to wrestle at the RegionalTournament where he dislocated his ankle in the opening minutes of the Regional Championship. In the hands of anylesser man the injury would have been a nuissance but once again facing certain defeat, Machado picked himself up andshowed what the true heart of a champion is made of by winning his second consecutive State Championship.

Junior Varsity Basketball

The 2002-03 J.V. Basketball Team faced tough competition and played a majority of its gameson the road during this record setting season. The “road warrior” mentality seemed to bring the teamtogether and the Wolverines finished the year with an excellent record of (21-5). This was a very disciplined and strong-minded group of individuals that played as a team andfought hard to the end of every game. The schedule included games with rivals Gulliver Prep, St.Brendan and Key West. Also, an old rivalry was renewed as Belen played Columbus for the first timein quite a few years. Many exceptional performances were turned in during the course of the season. Frank Manesscored 31 points in the season finale against LaSalle and Eric Montes blocked 7 shots in that samegame. The Wolverines won that contest by a score of 92-24 to record their 21st victory. JonathanHermida had 23 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists in a win over South Dade. Starting point guardChris Zumárraga and power forward Fernando Arán also set single season school records in assistsand rebounding, respectively. Every player on this year’s team contributed to the team’s success and there is no doubt that sev-eral of these student-athletes will be outstanding varsity players in the years to come.

The season can be summed up in one word: “Interesting.” To startthis off, they didn’t even practice on their own field and their only home gamewas played at La Salle. The team got off to a fast start after big wins overPine Crest and Key West. The line, which protected QB Frank Manesthrough the season, consisted of guards Louis Méndez and Steven Artau, center Louis Martín, tackles David Monzón and Miguel Mármol, and tight endCarlos Nieto. The RB’s Charlie Manrara, Danny Rodríguez, Ferny Arán,Jimmy Fenton, Brian Dominguez, Jonathan Hernandez, and Carlos Roqueracked up yards on the ground. Even though the running backs took anearly blow losing Maickoll Papastavros because of an injury, they still man-aged to hold together and succeed.

The Defense was led by Jimmy Fenton, Louis Méndez, CharlieManrara and Carlos Nieto as they helped douse the fires of opposing of-fenses. The defensive line consisting of Jimmy Fenton, Ray Milián, and AlexCapote, dominated the opposing offensive lines, while linebackers LouisMéndez, Steven Artau, Ferny Arán, Eddy Regalado, and Eric Knott shutdown the running game. Our secondary led by Charlie Manrara, CarlosNieto, Brian Domínguez, Peter Pidermann, Chris Zumárraga, DannyRodríguez, and Jorge Ugarte shut down the aerial attack. Without theleadership of Head Coach Angel Aparicio, and assistant coaches BarneyFlores, Javy Valdez, and Ramón “Mongo” Crego we wouldn’t have been ableto make it through the season. We were able to come together through amix of emotions, personalities, laughter, and tears to step up to the challengeof the toughest JV schedule ever.

We started the soccer season with try-outs, where thirty kids came out competing for eighteenspots . The JV team had an excellent mix of kids from eighth, ninth and tenth grades.

The players showed great interest and discipline, which helped us do our job. The physical, technical and tactical aspects of the game were learned quickly. The kids always absorbed the infor-mation focusing in the main objective which is to be in the Varsity team.

Our season went well without any inconveniences, we hope that in the future the work done bythese players will help coach Fabio Ortega and Assistant Hugo García to many succesful years ofsoccer for Belen.

6th Grade Basketball

The Sixth Grade Basketball team had two goals in mind this year. First, each player dedicated himself to become abetter basketball player and improve with each practice and every game. Second, and most important, was to have funplaying the game and enjoy the experience. The team played with a lot of heart all season long. After getting off to a slow start, the Wolverines came back to win 5 ofits last 6 games. Jorge Menocal averaged 9 points and 3.5 steals per game. He is an extremely versatile player and proved it by playingfour different positions during the course of the season. Starting center Mario Rojas contributed 9 points and 9 reboundsper game and was a major force at the defensive end of the court. Luis Wulff ran the offense, led the team in assists anddefinitely has much more Belen basketball in his future. This team demonstrated consistent improvement throughout the year and really came together as a team at the end ofthe season. Thanks to the parents of all the players for their support and enthusiasm.

The 2003 Sixth Grade Baseball team was full of energetictalent. They faced the All-Catholic Conference with a strongdefense and long bats in hand to secure runs. The team wasrarely contested on the field as they hammered their way to-wards season championship. The season was a great successdue to the outstanding pitching on the mound of elite players likeMario Rojas, Luis Wulff, Will Harrison, Nick Llaca and RenéGómez and Joe Capparelli, who was just as great behind theplate catching. Not to be left behind was Zachary Berger andAndrés Wiltz whose big bats showed up in a demanding way, aswell as Eric De Lara and Eric Donado and their soft hands in thein-field. Securing the outfield, playing multiple positions andkeeping runs from scoring were Adam Bofill, Lázaro Rodríguez,Angel Faraldo, Manny Abella, Javier Castañeda, Javier Sosa, and Michael Collantes. This outstanding combination of playersled the team to victory time after time. They turned in an unde-feated season and topped it off with the ACC Southern DivisionChampionship.
