Intermediate Connecting ShaftThe center connector member may be fixed or have limited axial freedom, either spring-loaded (as in quick-change joints) or free. The center connector must be specified to suitindividual needs. In spring-loaded applications, ends may be hex, square, spline,Woodruff key or specialized design requirements.

Page 11: Belden Catalog

A quick-change feature is available on our custom double universal joint, which allows the universal joint to be quickly removed and replaced without tools. This is an importantfeature when machine downtime is crucial. The quick-change universal joint consists oftwo back-to-back single universal joints connected with a spring loaded intermediateshaft. Pinning of outer yokes is not required because the spring tension on theintermediate shaft holds the quick-change universal joint secure at each end.

OEM Equipment Product Focus

Page 22: Belden Catalog

Belden supplies high strength universal joints to many manufacturers of varied steelprocessing equipment, including sheet steel leveling and straightening machines. Beldenhas answered the demands of this industry by providing specially designed universal jointsto handle the greater torque conditions of this application.

Belden’s special leveling universal joint starts as high strength alloy steel. Next, Beldenengineers enlarged the profile on the connecting end of the universal joint, whichdramatically increased the strength of the universal joint. This allows our leveling universaljoint to greatly exceed the torque capacity of standard universal joints.

Belden’s professional team worked with machine builders to create a better universal jointfor the steel processing industry.

• Special high strength material and design features

• Greater torque capacity

• Precision manufactured to meet highestindustry standards

20

Belden’s universal joints have also proven successful in the steel processing specialty ofrollforming. Belden’s special rollforming universal joint is similar in design to our highstrength leveling universal joint, for it handles the tough conditions of the machinery usedin rollforming. The rollforming universal joint also out performs other universal jointmanufacturer’s products in such conditions.

As on our leveling universal joint, Belden has expanded the torque capacity of the universaljoint by making design changes to the profile of the universal joint and upgrading thematerial. The basic function of the universal joint remains the same, but the mechanicalproperties are augmented. Engineering advantage and cost savings will be realized if youchoose Belden’s rollforming universal joint for your rollforming original equipment.

• Greater torque capacity through designenhancements

• Cost savings by using improved universal joint

OEM’s typically challenge Belden with the following criteria: provide quality universal joints on a narrow, pre-determined schedule at a cost within their budget restrictions. MRI manufacturers added specifications particular to their industry: a finished, ready toinstall, surface corrosion resistant universal joint assembly that could handle a large angle of operation.

Belden’s team of professionals worked with the OEM, and responded to their terms with a double universal joint assembly complete with shafting and a corrosion resistant finish. The double universal joint assembly allowed for the large angle of operation and the surfacewas black oxided to insure resistance to surface corrosion. Belden also provided theshafting, so that the product was ready to install, meeting all the customer’s specifications.

• Ready to install assemblies available

Belden universal joints can handle the harshest environments and the application withinthe electronics field is proof. A manufacturer of circuit boards included in their machinedesign a universal joint to be cyclically dipped into 600 degrees F molten solder, and they came to Belden for assistance.

The Belden team answered their challenge by proposing a stainless steel and siliconebooted universal joint. Both the materials of stainless steel and silicone operate under the high temperatures and corrosive conditions. The boot also prolonged the operatinglife of the universal joint. Belden’s material suggestions proved to prevail over the harshenvironment, and today, Belden still enjoys being their singular universal joint supplier.

• Design assistance available

• Complete assemblies able to withstandhigh temperatures

23

The world's manufacturers rely on Belden's universal joints for their most intricate powertransmitting functions. engineering challenges. Belden

offers couplings that are

custom finished to meet all your

special requirements.

Belden couplings allow for motion

control, absorb shock, and

handle a variety of misalignment

and operating conditions. We offer

coupling solutions for all power

transmitting or motion control

functions.

Page 28: Belden Catalog

Belden Incorporated: Coupling DivisionSlit Flex Style: b series

The B series of couplings has a cut pattern consisting of two sets of two cuts. Each set ofcuts has two beams that overlap each other, much like a thread that has multiple starts. These beams are slightly shorter in rotational length than those of the C series. This givesthe coupling higher torsional stiffness (lower windup) for greater accuracy. In general, these beams are thicker than those in a C series coupling of an equal outside diameter, this gives the coupling greater torque capacity. Due to the thicker beams and the shorterlength these couplings sacrifice some flexibility to obtain the greater performance.

• Zero backlash

• Two sets of two cuts

• Bore tolerance: +.001”/-.000”

• Accommodates angular and parallel misalignment and axial motion

Belden Incorporated: Coupling DivisionOldham Couplings

A robust, three part coupler rated for intermittent operation, the Belden Oldham couplinghas zero backlash, high torsional stiffness and offers easy connection of drivers in blind ordifficult installations. The Oldham coupling is widely used for motion control, typically inpositioning tables, fluid delivery systems, and similar applications.

A key feature of the Oldham concept is the exceptional, flex-free, radial misalignmentcapability it provides. As there are no restoring forces, bearing loads are low. Its operationshould not be confused with the jaw coupler which works on different principles.

• Tolerant of pronounced radial misalignment

• Electrically isolating

• Flex-free mechanical action-low bearing loads

Soft Flex Couplings are three piece couplings consisting of two zinc alloy hubs and a softplastic multi-tooth sleeve. With each of the two hubs mounted with set screws onto to thedriver shaft and the other to the driven shaft, the soft plastic transmits torque across thehubs through sheer connection. The sheer connection compensates for angular andparallel shaft misalignment providing protection from vibration and shock loads, andprovides electrical insulation. These couplings are easy to install and maintenance free.

Universal Joint A mechanical device that can transmit torque and/or rotary motion from one shaft toanother at fixed or varying angles of intersection of the shaft’s axis.

Pin and Block Universal Joint Also know as the Cardan or Hooke joint, the pin and block is the simplest unitavailable. It allows for a more positive transmission of rotating power or torque thanconventional flexible couplings.

Cross and Bearing Universal Joint A forged cross with a needle bearing connection provides minimal backlash andprecise positioning without compromising torque capacity.

Needle Bearing Universal Joint Needle bearings are installed at the pin ends to reduce backlash and increaseprecision and RPM capability.

Torque Torque is the force that causes rotation. Operating torque is the amount of torquethat is transmitted during normal operation. Torque is commonly expressed in pound-inches (lb-in), pound-feet (lb-ft), or Newton-meters (Nm).

• Multiply pound-inch (lb-in) x .112985 for Newton-meters (Nm).• Multiply pound-feet (lb-ft) x 1.35582 for Newton-meters (Nm).• Torque can be calculated using the following formula:• Torque (lb-in) = Horsepower (h.p.) x 63024

rpm

Axial Misalignment Axial misalignment is the amount of axial movement (end play) between the shafts, which is typically caused by motor vibration. Axial misalignment is measured in length units.

Parallel Offset Parallel offset is the parallel distance between shafts, and is measured in length units.

Torsional Stiffness Torsional stiffness is the degree of resistance against twist. It is commonly expressedin pound-inch/radian (lbin/rad) or Newton-meter/radian (Nm/rad).

• Multiply pound-inch/radian (lbin/rad) x 6.47357 for Newton-meter/radian (Nm/rad).

• Multiply pound-inch/degree (lbin/deg) x .01745 for pound-inch/radian (lbin/rad).

Angular Misalignment Angular misalignment is the angle at which the shafts intersect. It is commonlyexpressed in degrees.

Zero Backlash Zero Zero backlash refers to the amount of side to side play within a coupling assembly.

Duty Cycle The load on a universal joint is either intermittent or continuous. Under mostoperating conditions, a joint’s intermittent load capacity is greater than it’s continuousload capacity.
