Derrick Paul Mcmeans, aspiring Minister, Author, Politician. With his two brothers and three sisters raised by a single mom; Derrick felt a sense of responsibility as the oldest

to help take care of the family. He speaks openly concerning many issues he experienced throughout his life, including poverty, anger, hopelessness, and maturing

without a strong father figure. Having a mom who is mentally ill was one of those things and, as he says, “It was the toughest of all those things.” Derrick and his siblings

entered the child care system, though they continued living with their mom. After a mental evaluation she realized that she was unstable and allowed them to go into

care so she could receive the proper help she needed. Derrick and his siblings were sent to the United Methodist Children’s Home in Alabama. There, he found hope. In

the subsequent three years, Derrick met some of the most loving, caring, and supportive people he ever met. In his words: “I was exposed to things I did not know

existed. My experiences there help nurture my growth. When I moved back home with my mom, I knew there was more to life than what I was seeing. There was more

than drugs, gangs, teen pregnancy, encircled living, etc.”
