Being Green in the Changing World of

Search Engine Optimization

When I started with SEO it was so much easier to rank!

It's time to look for keywords

It's time to reach new heights

It's time to meet your buyers in Google search tonight

It's time to write your content

It's time to code it right

It's time to publish blog posts in your WordPress site tonight

When I started with SEO it was all rainbows and sweet music…

A keyword was just a keyword.

Webmasters could hide content in white text on white backgrounds.

Desktop was the only search.

300 words was a worthy blog post that would rank well.

You could buy inbound links.

And even better…

A #1 rank meant you’d actually be at the top of page one search results and in the spotlight.

And you actually knew where you ranked in Google!

We were superstars!

Ah…those were the good days of search!

Then algorithm changes became frequent and judgment from search engines became fierce.

Penalties started blowing websites and blogs completely out of search.

Mobile arrived and passed desktop in search usage.

Voice search arrived and took over 20% of Google’s inquiries, and as a result, search phrases became much more complex.

Are we starting to lose control of SEO and search?

Lack of data Stronger competition Information overload Rules and restrictions Pandas and penguins Knowledge graphs and rich cards Personalized search Mobile and voice search Malware and performance issues

Years ago I lost my love for SEO.

I was tired of plugins.

I was tried of dealing with penalties from

client shortcuts.

When I lost my love for SEO,

I lost control of my destiny.

I needed to remember that SEO isn’t about WordPress plugins.

I needed to remember that SEO is really about doing good and helping others succeed.

I needed to remember what made me special was that I wanted to do good and help others.

I needed to remember that at one point I stole the show.

And more importantly, I could do it again.

SEO taught me that I could be a superstar.

I excelled by focusing entirely on the user, by providing help, and by offering solutions.

I educated, I gained trust, and I built authority online.

SEO has changed a lot, and yet, it is the exact same. The goal of search has always been to help people find information.

• Ask questions about you and your target market

• Review your existing data and history

• Research competitors for keywords and tactics

Research

• Build a seed list of preferred keywords

• Pull search volumes • Score for Relevance • Create a sitemap and

plan for keywords

Plan • Write quality content • Optimize content for

SEO and usability • Promote and link build • Reverse engineer your

success and repeat

Execute

Good SEO has and always will start and end with a structured process.

The first step in your SEO journey is to ask questions about you & your visitor:

Who are you? What do you do? What makes you different? Who do you compete with? Who do you help? How can you help them? What problems do your visitors have? What questions do they want to ask? Can you answer any of these questions?

Keywords are still important. They’re just different.

New users are coming online every day so queries are much more diverse than ever before.

Is Mac and Cheese healthy?

How do I build a website?

How many centimeters are in a meter?

What’s the average age for buying a cell phone?

Where’s the closest Starbucks?

Don’t fight the knowledge graph, voice search, or any other Google shift.

Go beyond being green!

Embrace Google’s changes and educate yourself .

Embrace what makes you unique!

It’s the easiest way to stand out in a crowd and the easiest way to make an impact in organic search.

Can I answer any questions?
