Beijing
• Beijing is a city in the North of China. It is China’s second largest city after Shanghai and it is one of China’s 4 ancient capitals and it has a population of over 17 million. But this is the first time they have ever hosted the Olympics.
What Sports
• This section is to give you a brief understanding of what sports there were in the Beijing Olympics. A variety of Athletics including the 100m sprint, the Triple Jump, High jump and more. Swimming was a major popularity with Michael Phelps winning 8 Gold Medals. There was some Weightlifting that came out quite successful with a total of 5 new world records. BMX Biking is a new sport that has been added.
World Records
• Many world records were broken at the Olympics. Many of them were in the swimming races. Some swimming were 200m breaststroke (female and male), 200m medley (male) and many more. There were 5 weightlifting records broken including the 85kg weight was lifted, athletics had many records including 2 from Usain Bolt which were 100m sprint and 200m sprint. This was stunning as the records were smashed.
Olympic MedalsOverall China were the people that won both the Olympic and
Paralympics. Michael Phelps made the new world record for the most gold medals in one Olympic Games. He got eight gold medals beating Mark Spitz’s seven in the 1972 Olympics at Munich. His medals included 100m freestyle and more. Larissa Latynina won the 2nd most amounts of records all in gymnastics. Steve Redgrave was a British rower (a sport we did very well in) receiving 6 medals (5 gold, 1 bronze).
