FROM THE SHERIFF

Assistant Chief Deputy Lupe Garza brings nearly 30 years of service and experience in law enforcement. She oversees the Investigative and Judi-cial Sections, under the Office of Gen-eral Services, of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

She began her law enforcement career as a state trooper with the Texas Depart-

ment of Public Safety. In 1994, she was promoted to the position of sergeant in-

vestigator with the narcotics section. In that capacity, she investigated numerous

complex narcotics investigations. In 1997, she was again promoted within the

Department to the rank of lieutenant. As such, she supervised narcotics investiga-

tors and assisted with the implementation of investigative tactics for such cases,

many with international connections.

Most recently, Chief Garza served as captain over the Intelligence and Counter-

terrorism Division based in at DPS Headquarters in Austin. There, she oversaw

the day-to-day operations of The Texas Joint Crime Information Center, and was

involved with border security matters, which included interaction and cooperation

with local, state and federal entities.

The executive staff is officially complete as of September. It’s time to put the ad-

ditional workforce to work and take this department to the next innovative level.

There is so much work to complete.

We also recently unveiled the latest edition of Kids & Cops participants. There

are 23 new faces featured in the latest trading card edition, on 17 different de-

signs. I’m proud to have a new group ready to go into the community and contin-

ue to strengthen our relations with all our neighbors.

After being challenged by Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins and Denton County Sheriff William Travis and Dallas County candidate for treasurer Pauline Medrano, Sheriff Lupe Valdez recruited her nine chiefs to fulfill the challenge with her. With the help of Director Diane Bronar-Skipworth and her Support Services Divi-sion, the arrangements were made for the successful fundraiser. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department raised over $600 to go to the ALS associ-ation. Thank you to everyone for the support!

September 2014 – DSO Shelby Womack

Detention Service Officer Shelby Womack is the sole expunction officer for the

Dallas County Sheriff’s Department. Ms. Womack’s—as she is affectionately

called out of respect for her age—expertise and tenure with the department, is

an experienced print technician. She receives orders to expunge, redact, de-

lete, submit, update records for nondisclosure from over 40 district and county

courts, other judicial branches, health & human services, juvenile department,

and Dallas Medical Examiner’s Office. Ms. Womack retired from the depart-

ment in October. She began her career with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Depart-

ment in 1997.

TRAINING

CAN BE FUN!

Inmate Program officers were offered a staff development training on communication and team building.

They teamed up to find 19 designated land-marks throughout the local community.

This activity required group communication, strategic planning and execution.

Director Yolanda Reyna and Assistant Director Maggie Sanchez had a juicy fried chicken meal waiting for them upon their return to the office!

The winning team members are Video Manager: D. Williams and Officers R. Manny, J. Boyd, V. Mattoon,

V. Garcia and J. Richardson.

After 11 years of service to the Dallas County Sheriff’s

Department, Mike Shippy retired at the end of August.

Mr. Shippy served as manager for the photo lab staff.

August 22, 2014: Mary Banks, mother of Retired Deputy Dorothy Retta (formerly of the Warrant Executions Sec-tion), passed away.

September 6, 2014: Retired Lieutenant Harry Bruce Sher-man passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 85.

Retired Sheriff’s Deputy Harriett Marks (daughther), grandsons Sr. Sgt. Bryan Sherman (Vehicle Crimes Unit), Investigator Danny Sherman (Warrant Execution Section), and son-in-law J.C. Moree (Detention Service Officer), strive to carry on a proud legacy.
