“An extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce mpg by up to 2 percent,” Christensen said. “The reduction is based on the percent-age of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.”

4Reducing idle time. A little idling is normal, but excessive idling does a number on fuel economy. Drivers can have a major influence on idling percentages.

“Monitoring the percentage of idle time versus overall engine time can uncover driv-ers idling 25-50 percent of the time,” said Hannan of Merchants.

Christensen of Mercury Associates has also seen firsthand how paying attention to

idle time can pay off. “Typically, idle reduction offers the greatest opportuni-ty for fuel economy improvement and savings — about 19 percent,” she said.

One of Christensen’s clients reduced idling 28 percent in 17 months after install-ing telematics in its light-duty vehicle ser-vice fleet. They also improved miles per gal-lon by 22 percent over a three-year period. Another client — a Canadian oil and gas corporation — established a goal to transi-tion its entire oil field into an idle-free zone.

“They did this by addressing driver con-cerns about in-cab comfort,” she said. “De-vices were installed in all pickup trucks to keep the drivers warm in the winter and cool in the summer.”

5 Preventive maintenance compliance. Whether tracked with telematics devices or not, encouraging drivers to keep up on pre-

ventive maintenance can also improve fuel economy.

“Improperly inflated tires and clogged or dirty filters and sensors will impact mileage,” Hannan said. “Measuring whether a driver is keeping up with the planned preventive maintenance schedule is critical.”

Christensen agreed: “Proper preventive maintenance can improve fuel economy up to 7 percent, and optimal tire pressure and alignment yields a 2- to 4-percent reduc-tion,” she said.

6Eco-driver training. According to Christensen, eco-driver training typically improves fuel economy 5-10 percent. Driv-er training can also keep staff members fo-cused on the fleet’s green driving goals, and keep them diligent in their efficient driv-ing behaviors.

7 Hiring practices. Butsch of Joy Glob-al argued that what happens before a driver ever gets in the car — including good hiring choices — plays a role, too.

Rather than simply monitoring drivers from afar, then correct-ing their behavior, Alvin Independent School District encour-ages drivers to play an active role in meeting green fleet goals.

has come a long way toward employing new techniques to meet green fleet goals. “As a school district, alternative-fuel vehi-cles were introduced into the fleet 31 years ago to offset the cost of fuel. Back then, behavior modification and going ‘green’ would have sounded like a lot of mumbo jumbo,” he said.

According to Mejias, driver behav-ior modification started six years ago, to unify what drivers could or could not do while on route or on trips. “The intention at the time was not ‘green’ but to reduce down time by using GPS tracking, cam-era systems to evaluate student manage-ment and reduce idle time to cut down on the exhaust fumes at schools while waiting for students to load. Adding mpg evalua-tions and driver performance came later on as we realized how all of these changes brought more order among the drivers and of course the fuel and maintenance saving.”

Eliminating Speeding, Idling & Personal Use

Benfield Electric in Manassas, Va., moni-tors behavior when drivers are on the job in their vehicles as well as when they’re off the job — and shouldn’t be driving them at all.

Using Verizon Networkfleet’s GPS track-ing capability, Benfield Electric can sched-ule vehicles for jobs in the same area on a given day. They also leverage an idle-time report, which identifies drivers who con-sistently exceed the company’s standard threshold of more than two hours per day or 10 percent of driving time. Both help the company use less fuel and reduce emissions.

“It’s normal to want to idle vehicles during hot or cold weather. I don’t blame anyone, but it wastes fuel and costs mon-

“A good driver is a good driver,” he said. “You want a conscientious driver with a good record, minimal accidents, and mini-mal speeding tickets. If you hire good drivers in the beginning, it goes a long way — you don’t have to put the genie back in the bottle.”

Christensen of Mercury Associates agreed. “At the end of the day, it is easier — and less costly — to keep a good driver doing well than it is to turn a bad driver into a good one. Stopping the hire of bad drivers and conducting ongoing reinforcement and recognition of good drivers is a cost-effective practice,” she said.

A Real-Life Look at Telematics & Driver Behavior Modification

Juan Mejias, fleet manager for Alvin In-dependent School District (ISD), takes a multifaceted approach to creating green-er drivers. His strategy includes excessive idling monitoring, GPS units, driver mile-age reports, and onboard camera systems. The school district also operates propane autogas buses, which alone yields up to 30 cents in savings per mile compared to their conventional diesel-powered vehicles.

Focusing on these factors has paid off for the fleet. “Lowering our idle times re-duced fuel consumption and maintenance hours on the engine,” Mejias said. “GPS monitoring helped us to pinpoint exces-sive speed and driver rerouting.”

Rather than sim-ply monitoring driv-ers from afar, then cor-recting their behavior, Mejias encourages them to play an active role in meeting green fleet goals. “Showing driv-ers their mileage reports gave them a goal to see if they could increase their miles per gallon ratio,” he said.

Based on his experience, Hannan of Merchants underscored the importance of focusing on mpg to operate a greener fleet. “Miles per gallon remains one of the best ways to monitor emissions output,” he said. “For a typical fleet sedan driving 25,000 miles per year, an improvement of 1 mpg can eliminate 337,057 pounds of CO2 and greenhouse gases for a 500 unit fleet annually.”

Alvin ISD also leverages an onboard camera system. While its primary function is monitoring cell-phone use or misconduct for safety purposes, they are also able to address inefficient driving be-haviors.

With 12 propane autogas buses in its fleet in addition to hybrid models, Adams has improved its mpg and reduced emis-sions. Utilizing a gPS program to monitor idle time — and drivers willing to focus on this area of improvement — they’ve been able to save tens of thousands of dollars in fuel waste.

took delivery of our first propane autogas buses and heard continual comments from drivers regarding how much power the en-gines had and how quick they were ‘off the line,’ ” said Ron Latko, director of transpor-tation and fleet management for Mesa Pub-lic Schools.

Latko noted that training for new drivers will be included as well as involving veteran drivers as quickly as time permits.

“We will be adding separate training for all drivers at an increased pace and once we have the simulator available to us, that will speed up the process. The drivers have bought into the program and want to do the right thing for the environment, which makes a big difference,” he said.

In addition to classroom training, the dis-trict also uses Zonar GPS to monitor idling. This has reduced fuel consumption signifi-cantly, yielding a savings of $185,000 per year.

Christensen of Mercury Associates rein-forced the impact of driver training paired with idling reduction. “Excessive idling can waste up to 800 gallons of fuel annually for the average service truck,” she said. “Driver training programs can also help companies save fuel and reduce greenhouse gas emis-sions by increasing drivers’ skills, knowledge, and performance. A driver-training program that improves fuel economy also eliminates greenhouse gas emissions.”

Modifying Driver Behavior Doesn’t have to Be Expensive

Before fleets shy away from a focus on driver behavior to meet green fleet goals, they should consider this: It can be an af-fordable solution.

“Changing driver behavior does not have to be expensive. While telematics greatly im-prove the odds of success, there are steps that fleet managers can take without investment in new technology — primarily driver edu-cation,” said Christensen of Mercury Asso-ciates. “Fleet managers need to know their drivers, not just the vehicles they put them in. For example, spending time in the field with different drivers will greatly benefit the fleet manager in understanding what challeng-es the driver faces in his or her job function and how the vehicle relates to that function. Changing behavior is a lot easier when the functional aspects are understood.”

ey,” said James Tharp, service manager for Benfield Electric. “We had some crews that were sitting on job sites taking two-hour lunches while running the vehicles with either the A/C or heat on, depend-ing on the season. They thought the GPS only tracked them, but when the vehicle idles, its status turns blue.”

According to Tharp, the reports show a blue status event every 3 minutes in the tracking report. “Needless to say, labor and fuel were saved, so this information is key to green your driver,” he said.

Since 35 percent of its drivers are allowed to take vehicles home, Benfield Electric also uses its GPS solution to deter drivers from using company vehicles for personal rea-sons. This reduces total miles traveled and subsequent emissions. An odd-hours re-port highlights what vehicles are used out-side normal work hours.

Similarly, Tharp uses a speed violation report to determine drivers who habitu-ally speed.

“Using Networkfleet, we can monitor speeding, idling, and odd-hour usage — habits known to increase fuel consumption,” Tharp said. “It was easy to create thresholds and set up three Networkfleet reports that would flag these factors on a daily basis.”

Benfield Electric’s focus on monitoring and changing drivers’ habits allows it to re-duce emissions, while also saving money on fuel and hourly labor costs and reduc-ing wear-and-tear on vehicles.

“Eliminating unnec-essary driving keeps fuel use down and ex-tends the life of the ve-hicle,” Tharp said. “So does reducing speed-ing and idling, which are both fuel wasters and hard on the vehi-cle. Altogether, I es-timate we save about $10,000 in fuel costs simply by changing these three behaviors. I recommend getting GPS immediately and watching it unfold be-fore your eyes. Saving fuel is green and the

money you save is green, a win-win.”

Idle Monitoring Meets Driver Training

Mesa Public Schools in Mesa, Ariz., em-ploys hands-on driver training together with idle monitoring to modify driver behavior. Doug Darbyshire, the district’s supervisor of Training and Safety, used his in-depth research to implement behavior modifica-tion into the fleet’s driver-training program.

The program encourages drivers to use gentle acceleration and eliminate jackrabbit starts, maintain steady speed while driving, ease off acceleration before stopping, and use air conditioning judiciously. All of these be-haviors contribute to the fleet’s environmen-tal goal of reducing noise and local air pol-lutants. It also anticipates a 5 to 15-percent fuel savings in the long term.

By July 2015, the District will occupy a new facility that will include a bus simulator. There, it can monitor the skills of its drivers in the same areas in which they are trained. With simulation exercises, the District hopes to prevent inefficient driving behaviors be-

fore they begin. “Part of ‘going green’
