Operation Christmas Child Update: Our fund raiser be-gan in June and is moving right along. As of now we have 52 boxes signed out. There is still time to fill a box or to donate needed items being collected in the boxes by the display. We will be packing additional boxes on Novem-ber 2nd. There is a sign-in sheet on the display table to sign your completed boxes back in. Boxes may be brought back to church anytime. God bless all who have donated to this worthy cause. Daryl Jarvis

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

UPDATE

Community Food Cupboard coupons

The Community Food Cupboard in downtown Rochester serves a large senior community, as well as others in emergency situations as they arise. We (The Women of the ELCA) feel that this program is another way that Our Saviour can do God’s work within the community.

Coupons collected will be sent in on a weekly or biweekly schedule. The Food Cupboard uses the coupons to buy the prod-ucts and then distributes the products to their clients. We need to watch expiration dates carefully, thus the weekly or bi-weekly mailings. Coupons requested include: canned goods (especially soups, as well as vegetables and fruits); peanut butter (they stressed this product); cereal products and dairy products. A box for the coupons is located on the table in the narthex.

Thank you in advance for your support of this project.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Augsburg Room update - We have obtained two quotes for replacing the flooring that would include removing the old rug and linoleum tile and replacing both with new linoleum tile. At the last church council meeting the consensus of opinion was if we were going to undertake such a project that is would be best to include the hallway as well. Adjusting the quotes based on the square footage resulted in estimates of $12,500 and $14,400. We are also getting a quote for removing the current flooring materials and polishing the underlying concrete floor that could be a less expensive option. All of the above is preliminary and would require church council endorsement and congregational approval (by vote) at a congregational meeting. Trustees are recommending this project as the carpet on the lower level is worn out and repeated flooding has left the room with "stinky carpet syndrome" that we can't seem to get rid of. In other news, the security system had a recurring problem of false alarms that hopefully has now been fixed by Doyle. The lawn mowing crew had a light summer as the lawn quit growing with the lack of rain. Fall is approaching and the lawn will start to grow again with some rainfall and cooler temperatures; they will have some more mowing to do before seasons end.

It’s not fair! It’s not fair! From playground, to living room, to courtroom, we hear the cry through the land about fairness A child is pulled away from the playground while other children remain and it’s not fair. A teenage boy is not allowed to wear an earring while other friends can and it’s not fair. Every lawsuit begins and ends with the implied cry, “It’s not fair!”

We, as a people, truly do have a tremendous sense of fairness. Institutions as diverse as the Federal Trade Commission, Na-tional Collegiate Athletic Association, and the United Way exist for the purpose of promoting equity and fairness. What is fair, however, can be a complicated and costly thing to determine.

What if fairness means really getting what we deserve? What if, in response to our thoughtlessness to neighbor and friend, we got what we deserved? What if, in response to our hurtful word or lack of action, we got what we deserved? What if God decided to treat us fairly according to the manner in which we had kept our promises to God?

We can often see in scripture that God gives and takes, and God awards and punishes. God also sent God’s own Son to save people from the judgment of their own sense of fairness. On our behalf, Christ speaks for us and God chooses not to treat us as we deserve. God chooses to show us mercy instead. The God who does not always act as fairly as few would like is the same God wo takes the sting out of death. We can live with that.

My daily prayer is “Lord may I never get what I deserve” Amen.

ELCA Churchwide Assembly key actions

8/16/2016 11:40:00 AM

CHICAGO – Voting members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) approved a number of key actions

during the 2016 ELCA Churchwide Assembly held in New Orleans Aug. 8-13. The assembly is the highest legislative author-

ity of the church.

The 945 voting members:

Elected William B. Horne II of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Clearwater, Fla., vice president of the ELCA. Horne was installed

during closing worship Aug. 13.

Accepted the "Declaration on the Way," a unique ecumenical document that marks a path toward greater unity between

Catholics and Lutherans. At the heart of the document are 32 "Statements of Agreement" that state where Lutherans and

Catholics do not have church-dividing differences on topics about church, ministry and the Eucharist. The document also

presents the differences that remain.

Approved AMMPARO – the ELCA's strategy to Accompany Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy, Representation

and Opportunities. The ELCA developed this strategy based on commitments to uphold and guarantee the basic human

rights and safety of migrant children and their families; to address the root causes of migration in countries from Central

America's Northern Triangle and Mexico and the treatment of migrants in transit; to work toward just and humane policies

affecting migrants in and outside the U.S.; to engage as a church with all of its companions, affiliates and partners to respond

to the migration situation and its causes; and to advocate for migrant children and their families.

Approved the Ministry of Word and Service roster. Beginning Jan. 1, 2017, ELCA associates in ministry, deaconesses and

diaconal ministers will be a single, unified roster of Ministry of Word and Service. The accompanying constitutional amend-

ments related to the roster were also considered and approved by the assembly.

Approved the 2017-2019 budget proposal. The budget includes a 2017 current fund spending authorization of $65,296,005

and a 2017 ELCA World Hunger spending authorization of $24.8 million; a 2018 current fund income proposal of

$64,057,220 and a 2018 ELCA World Hunger income proposal of $25 million; a 2019 current fund income proposal of

$64,151,175 and a 2019 ELCA World Hunger income proposal of $25 million; and authorizes the Church Council to estab-

lish a spending authorization after periodic review of revised income estimates.

Approved various memorials – or proposals – from the ELCA's 65 synods. In addition to memorials considered "en bloc,"

the assembly separately approved the following: deepening relationships with historic Black churches; toward a responsible

energy future; repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery; peace with justice in the Holy Land; justice for the Holy Land

through responsible investment; African Descent Lutherans; call to discernment on U.S. foreign and military policy; welcom-

ing refugees; and supporting military personnel, veterans and their families.

Elected members to serve on: Church Council, Portico Benefits Services, Mission Investment Fund, Augsburg Fortress,

Committee on Appeals, Committee on Discipline and Nominating Committee.

Adopted amendments to the ELCA Constitution, Bylaws and Continuing Resolutions.

A THANK YOU FROM MAGGIE HARRIS

AND THE COMMUNITY LUTHERAN MINISTRY

Dear Friends, You are so gracious to have helped with Summer Camp. It is a lot of fun to watch the little ones find their own way. The children love camp! The part they like the most is learning about Jesus.

Your gift of $887.00 was a blessing to many. Children learn an d then they take it to their friends. And then they take it home. The love of Jesus gets shared in many ways.

God is good to all of us, his children. Please continue to pray for all of us, as we need your continued support.

May God Bless you and your family,

The Evangelism Committee is planning a "Trunk or Treat" event on Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. in the church parking lot. The children in Halloween Costumes will travel from trunk to trunk collecting treats and then proceed to Dell Hall for movies, bobbing for apples, donuts and cider.

We are looking for members to provide their vehicle "trunks" and/or treats. We would like to have approximately 30 vehicles. This event will be open to the public so generous

donations of candy would be greatly appreciated.

Please sign-up on the tear-off sheet on the bottom of this page or contact Pam Spencer (637-9337) if you would like to par-ticipate with your vehicle or candy donations. Place the tear off sheet in the offering plate or return it to the church office.
