Page 2: BEGINNING KIDS KNITTING HANDOUTS

1. To bind off your stitches, you need to start by knitting 2 stitches onto your right needle.

2. Insert the tip of the left needle into first (bottom) stitch on the right needle as shown below:

3. Pulling the yarn fairly taut with your right hand, lift the first stitch OVER the top stitch on your right needle.

4. There should only be one stitch on your right needle. Your first stitch will be bound off.

Knit another stitch onto the right needle and continue steps 2-4.

5. When there is just 1 stitch left on your needle, cut the yarn leaving a 6 inch “tail.” Pull the “tail” through the last loop to close and bind off that last stitch.

4. Pull the yarn through to the front of the “O” until you have a loose loop

5. Keeping hold of the loose loop, pull on the yarn in your other hand.

2. Roll your left thumb over the yarn and point it back up so the yarn around your thumb as shown:

3. Slide the tip of the needle up through the yarn loop on your left thumb.

4. Wrap the working yarn (coming from the ball) behind the tip of the needle and bring it in front:

The Knit Stitch

1. Hold the needle with the cast-on stitches in your left hand. Make sure the cast-on edges are on the right. You are now looking at the FRONT of the stitch.

2. Insert your right needle through the front of the stitch.

3. Wrap your working yarn behind your right needle and bring it to the front between the 2 needles. (This loop will become your new stitch!) Be sure that you’re holding onto both needles firmly where they cross in an “X”.

4. With the right needle bring your new stitch toward you and out through the old stitch.
