JUNE 9, 2017 Weekly Memo Action Items Florida Consortium on Inclusive Higher Education’s (FCIHE) 2017 Summer Institute This institute is a no-cost workshop that is open to all school district personnel. The workshop, “Florida’s College Horizons for Students with Intellectual Disability,” will be in Orlando on July 13, 2017. This course is for therapists, teachers (including general education, physical education, special education and adaptive physical education) and paraprofessionals. The instructor, Greg Solomon, is a sanctioned Bal-A-Vis-X trainer. This course will be in Ocala on July 26-27, 2017. Registration is now open and the event is limited to 30 participants. Bal-A-Vis-X was created by Bill Hubert Bill taught for 30 years in multiple settings and at various age levels

Over time Bill concluded that all of his students who struggled academically tended to exhibit similar physical characteristics

inability to control eye movement

inability to focus attention

inability to sit or stand without moving

illegible handwriting

stifflocked posture or limp posture

rhythmless gait

rhythmless cadence while talking or reading aloud

difficulty distinguishing left from right

clumsiness

mental andor physical apathy

After working with students for over two decades Bill developed Bal-A-Vis-X Rhythmic BalanceAuditoryVision Exercises for brain and brain-body integration The exercises demand cooperation promote self-challenge and encourage peer teaching

This training was offered in 2013 and there have been some significant updates since then including the use of the feet to provide a full body RL brain integration

Dear Florida School District Colleagues

I am excited to share with you about the Florida Consortium on Inclusive Higher Education and our goal to engageour secondary colleagues through collaboration and opportunities of professional development and technical assistance The mission of the FCIHE (a Higher Education Opportunity Act discretionary grant) is the development andexpansion of inclusive postsecondary opportunities for students with intellectual disability

The FCIHE is comprised of 4 Florida institutions of higher education (University of Central Florida University of SouthFlorida St Petersburg Florida International University and Florida State College Jacksonville) who provide support and technical assistance to a variety of stakeholders involved in transitioning students with intellectual disability to inclusive postsecondary education Attached you will find a brochure with contact information for each of the Consortium institutions

I am writing to you today to share our FCIHE resources and inform you of an exciting opportunity available to school districts teachers and staff regarding transition to postsecondary education for this population See Save the Date document attached for dissemination
