The OktoberfestOnce a year in October there is a great event in Munich. This is because on 12th October 1810 Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) was marrying Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. For this royal event there were festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates. These were renamed Theresienwiese to honour the Crown Princess. People decided to repeat the horse races each year and this later gave rise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest. Now this event is internationally known and popular. Last year has been the 179th Oktoberfest. An average of 6 million people are visiting each year and approximately 6,5 million litres of beer are consumed every time. On the grounds there are roller coasters, carousels and a lot of beer tents for all adult visitors.
